How To Fit A Shotgun To You - Length of Pull, Comb Height, & Cast

  • There are three main things you must do to properly fit your hunting shotgun to your body. You must adjust the length of pull, comb height or drop, and the cast. Gunfitting is very important because the way you eye sits when you mount your shotgun will determine how accurate you are. Whether it is a new modern shotgun with a plastic stock or a classic shotgun with a wood stock, you must consistently mount the gun the same way every time with good eye position to consistently hit targets like ducks, geese, pheasants, doves, grouse, or sporting clays. Hunters need a shotgun stock that fits their shoulder well. And fitting a shotgun to you is not that complicated and you can gain much of the benefit with only a small amount of knowledge and work.

    Thanks for reinforcing the importance of gun fit. Gun fit will determine where your shotgun will shoot. I was taught to mount a shotgun with my eyes closed. Opening my eyes once the gun is shouldered will usually tell me whether or not it fits me.

      Great point! I should have included that. That is true with rifles as well but it matters a bit more for shotguns.

    I thought about this:
    U must also take into account how much padding u have at ur shoulder's mounting location.
    If u'r wearing a T-shirt, flannel shirt, sweat shirt, n thick coat under ur shooting jacket
    w it's own pad, u r easily adding 1" on the gun's LOP.**
    So, whether ur shooting in the shnow or hot windless heat during Summers, u must
    recall u weren't wearing anyding when u've cut up/added shims on ur gun's Butt-Stuck. Thus
    4 all weather all season LOP consistency w ur gun, u must always shoot outdoors naked???!!!
    Cast - (11:54) I know where this term came from. Cast is the most popular item in India
    for centuries. I dink the term came from there. It doesn't mattr whether ur LH or RH, their
    elite authority would randomly castrate u at a crowded train station. But they don't touch
    their Brahman Sacred Cows bc. they r secretly eating dem while the lower casts starve to
    death. Neutral Cast means Neutering in India. Well, the lower cast's revenge is datttoo
    the rich casts seats inside the train coaches while the lower ones pay nothing up on the
    roofs. It must of bn terrible coughing when they go into tunnels during the steam locomotive
    era but more scarier when the trains electrified w catenary n pantographs up on the roof.
    Thx for ur dedicated video to our wonderful hobby; Clay smok'ng or feather spreading for dinner.
    1 to 4 ratio is a lot. Surprised. It would have bn EZr if u mark up ur rear thumb joint when u photo's
    where ur nose had touched the top of comb. It was hard to decipher where the thmb joint was.
    There is another bump behind the joint.

    Really appreciate this video. I never knew about this adjustment and now I know why these shims are sitting in my cleaning kit all these years! I will definitely check into the fit of my gun because I know for a fact I missed a lot of birds this year until I realized I had to concentrate on bringing the gun up higher which now I know could have been a result of adjustment. This will save ammo and end with less cripples. I was waiting for you to mention the fact that hunting gear will change everything but it will. It will allow a good starting point. Not to mention I don't wear as much gear in the warmer pheasant season and I will should hit more birds on the first shot if the adjustment needs to be made! Thank you.

      Having the wrong cast can move the point of the impact left or right to a degree. It can also make the gun hard to shoot. Per the video, you can fix with inserts to shift the stock, steaming and bending wooden stocks, etc. But generally speaking, if the cast matches you being right or left handed, that's usually enough for most hunters.

    • @chootum8295
      @chootum8295 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Awesome, here are some pointers:
      1) Turn your shoulders a bit more towards the target. Your stance is too much like a rifle shooting stance. Tuck your head and raise your shoulders. Your head and your spine should be perfectly in line. You should never have to tilt your head on the stock. Your eyes must be perfectly level with the horizon. Because your shoulders are facing the target a lot more now, you need to compensate for recoil by having 90% of your weight on your front foot.
      Hard to explain over text, but believe me this is how 99.9% of competitive skeet/trap shooters do it.
      2) a second pointer although much less important is your left hand grip. Grip the forend with 2 fingers on the left and 3 on the right (instead of 1 and 4). Use your index finger to point at the target. What this does is lock the hinge at your wrist, and allows for less rotation of the gun around its longitudinal axis. In other words, the rib will remain in plain with the horizon much better when at the fringes of your rotation.
      If none of this makes sense, I could FaceTime you. If that helps.
      The result of this, especially on the first point is the gun will rock you a lot less. And your rotation will be a lot smoother.
      Again, I love your Channel. Please don’t take this in a patronizing way. Just a humble opinion of a guy that’s been hunting and shooting Orange thingies for 30 years. 😂

    can you and enough like minded responsible shooting sports men look into leasing the property or another property, members ,there family's, close friends as guests. with a signed statement from each member that are totally responsible for and trash,junk, damage and expenses caused by members, there family's, guests/friends. any members caught breaking rules of the range and property/ private shooting club along the vote of 60 percent of members vote will lose membership and forbidden to come.on property plus have property legally posted, insuranced ,having local law enforcement spot check for trusspasers . absolutely no alcohol consumption on property as firearms and alcohol don't mix
    and termination of membership mandatory with no exceptions or excuses .it's sad but this is what it's came to for millions of Americans. papa wishing you well 😊

    Do these same rules apply to tactical shotguns?

    • @TheNewHuntersGuide
      @TheNewHuntersGuide  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In short, yes. But you can skirt the rules with optics. Here is a presentation I did about this for turkey hunting. The same principles apply for tactical use. th-cam.com/video/lPza0UhkHjQ/w-d-xo.html

    what about left eye dominance for right hand shooters?

    • @TheNewHuntersGuide
      @TheNewHuntersGuide  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is a hard one, it can cause a major problem. There are numerous imperfect options, close your left eye when shooting, learn to shoot left-handed, or use an optic. The last one is maybe the more practical. With rifles and scopes you can be less hindered by it, a scope or red dot can give you the same benefit with a shotgun. It can be weird wing shooting with a red dot but some people actually prefer it. It's not much of a disadvantage once you practice and get used to it.

    I've been shooting shotguns for 25 years and no one has ever taught me this. I occasionally do the eyes closed test like Hindsight Outdoors, but always tried to adjust my hold to the gun instead of the gun to my natural hold. I'll be doing this before the next time I go shoot. Great stuff!

    Will the wrong cast make my shotgun shoot to the left

    • @TheNewHuntersGuide
      @TheNewHuntersGuide  ปีที่แล้ว

      Wrong cast will make it shoot right or left depending on cast. If you are consistently shooting to one side, it could be the other factors as well. Could also be a bent barrell. Try another shotgun or two and see if you have the same problem. If so, it is probably an issue with your fit or perhaps your technique.

    • @TheNewHuntersGuide
      @TheNewHuntersGuide  ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Everyone you know, including yourself has looked down many barrels when cleaning and checking alignment. I clearly showed the slides were open and empty. This hypersensitivity to the obvious is nothing more than dogmatic and unrealistic. There is no way other to demonstrate proper alignment.
