Mahindra Group-owned iconic motorcycle brand BSA made its debut in India on Thursday with the launch of the 652-cc Gold Star 650 model, priced at Rs 2.99 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi). One of the oldest motorcycle companies in the world, Birmingham Small Arms Company (BSA), was acquired by the Mahindra Group's premium motorcycles arm, Classic Legends, in 2016. Classic Legends sells Jawa and Yezdi motorcycles in the country. The BSA Gold Star 650, which made a comeback in the UK in 2021, is currently being sold in Europe, Turkey, New Zealand, and the Philippines. "Bringing BSA to India is about sharing a piece of world motorcycling history with India. That indomitable spirit of BSA, a brand built in the fires of battle, is imbued in the new Gold Star," said Anand Mahindra, Chairman, Mahindra Group, at the launch. In 2016, David Bennett, who had kept the iconic BSA brand alive, approached Anand Mahindra with an offer to sell the brand. Initially, the deal slipped away to a competitor, leaving Mahindra disappointed. However, six months later, Bennett reached out again because of the competitor's delays. Seizing the opportunity, Mahindra swiftly closed the deal in just 48 hours. This rapid move brought BSA under Mahindra’s wing, leading to the brand's revival.

I owned a BSA bike once when I was a kid, it was a small one, so when I grew up I bought Atlas Contender :)
The well known competitor was none other than Bajaj Auto, one of Mahindra's key competitors in the Indian automotive and motorcycle industry.
In the mid-2010s, Mahindra & Mahindra, through its subsidiary Classic Legends, was in a race to acquire the rights to the iconic British motorcycle brand BSA. Bajaj Auto, led by Rajiv Bajaj, was also reportedly interested in acquiring BSA. Bajaj Auto, known for its success with brands like KTM and Pulsar, was a strong contender, and their interest nearly jeopardized Mahindra's chances of securing the deal.
However, due to certain delays on Bajaj's side, the deal eventually slipped out of their hands, allowing Anand Mahindra to swoop in. Mahindra was able to secure the BSA brand quickly, finalizing the acquisition within a very short timeframe, reportedly around 48 hours. This swift action by Mahindra ensured that Classic Legends could take control of BSA and begin plans to revive the brand.
This was a significant victory for Anand Mahindra, as it not only added a prestigious brand to Mahindra’s portfolio but also strengthened their position in the highly competitive motorcycle market.

Just buying the brand isn't gonna bring glory back, currently looking at the sales of the Jawa and YEZDI bikes things look pretty unclear. It would have been a better idea to revive the existing brand than adding more to the portfolio.
It was H D Shetty promoter of falcon tyres and karnataka scooters who brought the brand to india in the seventees, it was called BSA falcon GT 50, it was a first international collaboration in india, engines were from moto morini italy, he later sold the company to brooke bond
