I love how you acknowledged the opening credits! Punk rock music with bright cutout graphics is SO VERY 90s/00s romantic comedy. That opening credits scene is so underrated.

I guess, when it comes to the sex scenes, they did not want to show the "typical" gay sex scenes. They showed the "love making", and that was beautiful shot.

In the book Henry definitely doesn't instigate anything, but he does meet Alex's menace energy and loves antagonizing him at first, for the simple reason is that it gets Alex talking to him and paying attention to him XD my poor baby

This was absolutely sanitized from the book and yet it’s still rated R. If one of the leads was a woman this would be PG-13 without a doubt.

100%, I’ve been thinking that. Honestly the amount of nudity (ie side boob) and vulgarity with heterosexual sex scenes, I am shocked that this is R. It’s very clearly because it’s two men that these sex scenes “warranted” an R rating.

    • @andre_p
      @andre_p 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

Same here, I kept thinking of a ‘short’ Alex when watching the movie before I let it go…🫴 The movie has a macho but sensitive Alex and a soft but commanding Henry, IOW it has the MC’s dynamic in reverse - but it works: that’s where the casting magic occurs. The movie gives us a duo that complements and sees each other as their life mate. I love that both book and movie show elements of physical traits (height, hair/skin color), upbringing (elite, live in a castle) and vision (Alex’ ‘we must help change people’s lives’ to Henry’s ‘we are irrelevant’’). Not just a bland rom-com then, but good entertainment, food for thought, eye candy calories and definitely earning a spot in the LGBTQ+ iconography@@brattneyrose5652)

I usually read the books before the movie, however, I had never heard about the book until watching the movie so I am going to have to go in reverse on this one. I have only seen these 2 actors in straight roles and I have to say they adapted very well as a gay couple. Sometimes there is such a disconnect as straight actors that the chemistry is ruined. So kudos for their adaptation to their respective roles and believability. Now I am off to read the book!

my 2 cents is I wish they had also killed the dad when he was young maybe military man and made the Step Dad the Entrepreneur/congressman. and since they merged June and Nora make Alex and June/Nora half siblings. The face the Prez was a non-Nuclear family was very appealing. Also the fact that the Step-Father was an eccentric Entrepreneur explains how the family moved up in status.

The cake is absurd as that is part of comedy. How could they cut it and serve any pieces without a stepladder to start at the top. (If they start at the bottom, they could only cut so much before undermining it.) There would be all sorts of serving people around the table and the minute the prince was touched, I think more people would spring into action to pull them away.
You can notice as it falls, Alex in particular rolls TOWARD Henry, so that when all is said and done, when the camera looks down, it seems to me to foreshadowing having two male bridegrooms on TOP of a normal wedding cake.
In the ending credits, there is a short clip where in the midst of the mess, Alex whispers to Henry "do you think anyone noticed?"
HOWEVER, because the film skirts so close to reality, it is easy to nitpick aspects that are there to make the story work despite being a bit implausible - it is a romantic comedy, after all. In particular, comedy often needs the action to proceed at a pace and in order to make the punch-line line work
Others may find this cheesy and full of cliches. I don't watch many romcoms as being a gay man, it is so hard in all the ones I have seen to transpose the heroine into another hero in an attempt to really feel the emotion. I am finding this one cuts so deep in a profound way that I have been binge-watching every reaction video of this that I can find, and tearing up in all the now-familiar lines. I have to say this has become my favorite movie and I'm not over exaggerating.

Exactly how I feel as a gay man and “gay’ romcoms. This one was a fresh take. I loved how they included some great information. The safe sex talk was important information with the comedy of no one wants to talk about sex with their parents. Perfect way to do it. Alex’s speech at the end was perfect. Queer people should able to come out on their own terms. Although the book is different on who outed both are great. The book’s story should be a movie in itself, it will not be a comedy. The movie shows how queers can be our own worst enemy. Something we should all think about before we let our little bitch ass self take over our brain.

@@donabaypro6782 In the different interviews, they point out all the little touches that they tried to get right - like the oval office with pictures of important women, including Harriet Tubman, the book by the same author in Alex's hand in the hammock, and a lot more that I missed or forgot. All involved treated this as a love letter to the novel/story.
But I think the comedy is timed perfectly to interact with the romance. I am amazed at each line of dialog, too. And at the same time, if this is enormously successful, we will see other ventures no longer shy away from queer love stories, and they can be done in all the different venues.

@@johnnehrich9601 I hope so after the disaster Bros was. The very bad part is Bros was a big studio giving a good for romcoms budget. It was also for gays, especially men. RW&RB was the straight young women and gays target that most queer shows are today. Bros probably destroyed gays getting another studio to do the same again. They look at the bottom line, not the content. I don’t blame them, they are looking for return on investment. Fortunately RW&RB have given us a chance at still getting content when we desperately need it.

2:33 when Alex grabs Henry by the shoulder. Henry turns around stiffly not bc of the cake icing, but bc Alex is accosting him in such a rude manner. Slapping a hand on a prince’s shoulder is a big no-no. When he realizes his tux is smeared by icing cake, Alex’ mind just goes flying. From a mere breach of protocol to an actual public disaster in just 2 seconds…🤣.

The movie was originally made three hours long but they were forced to cut it down to two, probably removing some of the transitions and scenes that explain things. Later on, they do get each of them to admit that they were smitten with each other from the first meeting - and angry that the other just seemed hostile. I think during the reception line at the beginning, Bea pulls Nora away as an attempt to fix up Henry with Alex. (And Alex says "how's it going?" and Henry just walks away. I think that was so not proper way to greet royalty and Henry took it as a sign Alex was mocking him.)
