THE USE OF COLOR IN THE SUBSTANCE
This is a different style of video, but one of my favorite things to see in film and tv is the use of color. One of the biggest things that stood out to me when seeing The Substance was the sublime utilization of color which created such a distinct visual identity. People often don't realize how much of a feat having this colorful of a film is, but it's due to the production design, costumes, makeup, location scouts, props department, cinematography and direction that such a technicolor feast for the eyes can come to be. I wanted to highlight this aspect of the film and give everyone involved in making the color pop in this movie their flowers. I hope you enjoy!

Also why does no one mention how the entire season 1 Conrad has a nice, cool, beautiful girlfriend, Nicole, that he treats like crap? He lies to her, goes behind her back, strings her along. He completely disrespects her. How is that attractive? And the worse one for me is in season 2, when they are in the car ride and he makes fun of Jeremiah’s college, the college Belly also got in to. He completely belittles them. He talk about his own college in such a snobby, arrogant way. I could never want Belly to be with someone who insults her possible college, her intelligence. Who insults and puts down his brother. Someone who time and time again says demeaning, really arrogant comments and acts like he is superior.

I love your channel and commentary. Just providing me team Jelly and team Jacob perspective. To your point I’m team Jelly and I was also team Jacob. I think you’re right that it comes down to preference because I would never want to be with Conrad or Edward. For me, I am not attracted to their personality or the way they interact with Belly and Belly. Even though I have always been team Jelly I did not think the prom thing was a big deal at all. I did not think what Conrad did was that bad or anything really. I thought he was fine in that moment. His mom was dying. For me, I have never been attracted to Conrad because I have never liked the way he treats her and interacts with her. It is very paternalistic and subtly controlling and it is just gross to me. Like he is always telling her to grow up. He dismisses her. He treats her like he is forever older and wiser and in control. In season 1 he tells her to grow up and stop looking in the mirror. He criticizes her. Then they almost kiss, she brakes up with Cam, she is so excited to see him and he just acts like nothing happened. He completely humiliates her. And when she calls him out he says he can’t and he’s not even nice about it. Then right after when he heard she and Jere may be together he freaks and starts texting her, texting her in the night, telling her he doesn’t want to lose her. Everyone always talks about how Jeremiah’s meddling in season 1, but Conrad meddled too. At the party Steven says how his girlfriend thinks Belly and Jeremiah are hooking up and Conrad immediately starts texting her. Then even after she goes with Jeremiah on the car ride home, he is texting her in the night and telling her he doesn’t want to lose her. So he just ‘can’t’ right now, but he won’t allow her to be with anyone else? That is so manipulative. I just see Conrad differently. I think he is very manipulative. In season 2 when Belly wants to respect Jeremiah and not be together, Conrad won’t respect that. He comes home under the guise that he is coming to see their sick mom, just so he can pressure Jeremiah to tell him they can be together. So selfish, narcissistic, manipulative. Then he goes immediately to Belly and when she is hesitant and considerate of Jeremiah, he lies and says Jere is doing great and he is over it. When we all watched the clip before and know full well Jeremiah was very upset about it. But he lies to Belly just to get what he wants. It’s gross. I felt very similar about Edward from Twilight that he was very paternalistic and subtly controlling of Belly and I was never attracted to him. I would never want to be with someone like that. He always had the upper hand and she was his possession. I liked Jacob because he respected her and thought she was strong and they could be equals in their relationship. I always liked Jeremiah more because he respects Belly and treats her like an equal. He cares about her opinions. He roots for her and always has. He builds her up. When she decided to do the Deb ball, Conrad criticize her and put her down. Jeremiah supported her and cheered her on. When Belly is with Conrad, she is weak and unfocused and only cares about him in this very unequal dynamic. I don’t like who she is was Conrad. Jeremiah has always lifted her up and rooted for her. He encourages her to go back to volleyball. He wants her to have her own identity and interests that don’t just revolve around him.

Also I don’t know why no one talks about how all of season 1 Conrad has a nice, cool, beautiful girlfriend, Nicole, and he is completely messing with her. He lies to her, strings her along, goes behind her back. Nicole does not deserve to be treated that way. Also, one of my worse offenses is in Season 2 in the car ride when Conrad makes fun of Jeremiah’s, and possibly Belly’s college. He completely belittles them both. He talk about Brown in such a snobby, arrogant way. Why would we ever root for Belly to be with someone who belittles her college, her intelligence?? Belittles his brothers college. I cannot understand it.

We need to recognize the role of the time period and culture in the application of law. It is sad but true that, when the trials took place, there wasn't the same generally accepted understanding of sa and cptsd that there is now. Some of these things were not included in the law and legal procedures that existed then, even though they may have been known within niches of psychological or sociological research. We're talking about a time before the lid was raised on the corruption of film, TV, and music industries by systemic sa cycles. Before it became common knowledge that things like this happen in "good families" (read: wealthy and/or powerful). If you don't know the patterns and symptoms, the trends and markers, then you won't interpret things correctly, even if you try really hard. When you know that this perpetrator is being protected as part of a larger abusive culture, suddenly you understand why the people who should have known and the legal and school systems that should have acted to protect the kids, either wouldn't or couldn't do so. We're talking about the same sick culture that produced and protected the newly elected abuser in chief, so it's not surprising. Just infuriating.

I see the legal profession having a very reactionary process. Much of this is because they work so heavily basing their verdicts on precedence. That to me, has law being fairly stuck in the past and not very proactive. As a science educator, I know we were exasperated when we knew students in the classroom were victims of csa but we had no legal support to do anything about it (in the 80’s). It took ages to shift things legally to what was going on in the real world. Shifts have been made, but still, victims are still not confident about reporting and knowing their case will be handled sensitively. Just a side issue: as it was a gruelling process getting the legal profession to respond to sa, we have a huge issue affecting all of humanity at the moment: climate change- and still the legal profession is in the dark about how important their responsiveness is. Let’s hope the learning from one issue translates to learning about another.

(She also mentioned that if people wanted to come at her, she owns guns, so there's that) SMH, when the people working in LE refuse to even try to learn about any psychological factors in a case, there are in the wrong career! this case and all of its nuances have encouraged me to pursue a degree/career in psychology. there is so much to it, and so SO much proof bringing validation to the brother's stories of horrific torturous abuse. I am far from being a professional, but I don't think it at all takes one to see the fact that they are, and were telling the truth. it really kind of horrifies me how adamantly people refuse to believe that they were sexually abused, and I am sadly aware that my relaying of facts will likely not change their preconceived opinions and biases. you were really able to articulate my thoughts on this case. everything about it is so incredibly heartbreaking and hard to stomach, but I think it's something that people should know about, to spread the fact that sexual abuse and abuse of any kind can occur in any family, no matter how wealthy or perfect they may appear. thank you for this analysis.

Of course, there's no proof of SA that happened to someone when they were children. All the evidence depicted by the law only applies to immediate act. Even an adult victim to indicate she or he had been SA, they are expect to not cleanse themselves & go straight to cops & hospital for check up right after it has happened. But its one screwed up law of evidence to expect a child of any age to do so. And when they reveal it during their adulthood, of course the Court bind by old school, rigid, inefficient & ineffective laws says, 'there's no sufficient proof'. I beginning to think lawyers & judges are just bunch of priest stuck with old religion law that doesn't make sense in the current world.

What an excellent idea! It’s a huge job, but it would be one of the most valuable documents around this case. Maybe sections of the trial could be divided up amongst people with relevant knowledge and Sammy could do the collating?

The bias of judge Weisberg and the prosecution appreciating indicators of sa in the trial was palpable. One part of the first trial that had me outraged was when the prosecution objected to an explanation of brain development being provided by Dr Burgess. As she was explaining the role of the pituitary gland and ways it is affected, she was interrupted in a most insulting way, with the prosecutor arguing that it is not known if that explanation was held by others in the scientific field!!!!!! This is attorney Pam, objecting to one of America’s, and very likely the world’s most qualified health professionals in behaviour/ brain functioning!!! She is so recognised that she worked for the FBI. Attorney Pam did not realise how dumb she made herself look. There is NO WAY a PhD qualified professional like Dr Burgess would refer to material, or especially present material to a court, if it wasn’t peer reviewed and accepted in her profession. I was boggled. Surely people qualified in law have studied academically!!! 🫨🫨🫨 Surely they know that anyone with even a Bachelor degree, let alone PhD, would not risk their reputation to present non peer reviewed material!!!! What made the prosecution look even more dumb, is that the material she objected to is material that has been in biology textbooks for AGES!!! - common knowledge for most people trained in biology! I couldn’t help but cringe, be furious and wonder- if this lawyer lacks such basic knowledge, what else is she dumb at? But what took the cake is when judge Weisberg agreed with the prosecution!!! 😩😩😩

I did some training run by people in the military and they demonstrated how we could apply military principles to our line of work. One principle presented was the rule of three: ‘If it happens once, it is chance. If it happens twice, it is coincidence. If it happens three times, it is enemy action.’ With the evidence you have presented Sammy, if it was only one item, we could say there is a likelihood we may have the interpretation of sa wrong. If there are two bits of evidence, it starts to raise eyebrows. With three bits of evidence, we can say there is a high level of certainty sa is going on. I lost count of how many pieces of evidence you presented! Well!!!! That is hammer over the head stuff! It makes the equation not add up if there is an assumption that sa is not happening. Thank you for your impressive presentation.

exactly.. I've studied crime for years and like the darlie routier case for example, the evidence is compelling and its not 1 or 2 things.. it's so many things..it's the totality of it all.

Hey Sammy, I just wanted to say how grateful I am for your analysis and thorough researching of this case. It’s genuinely so horrific what Erik and Lyle went through and the fact that they are still in prison 35 years later… I find it so very frustrating when people say that there is no proof of the abuse Lyle and Erik experienced when it is all there as you clearly outlined in this video! I’m looking forward to more potential videos on this case as there is so much to analyse, and so much to advocate for about issues and topics that were unfortunately present in this case. Lots of love to you! 💕

It's good you said it's your personal preference, coz girl! I liked everything about the mirror scene, from the choice of words to the acting skills. I however concur with you that S3 had a few editing mishaps, even in the carriage scene.

I think the Hand flashback is very important because IT IS the symbol of Eros and Psyche, when she enjures him and he realizes that He is in Love to her
