  • This footage is from 2018 at the John Petrucci`s Guitar Universe at "The Mansion" at Glen Cove. You can see how Tosin Abasi, Andy James and John Petrucci are completely astonished with Guthrie`s playing. This is why Guthrie is considered one of the best guitar player of all time!
By the way...the summer camp was awesome! All this guys not only are great guitar players but also very nice people!

In my view, what separates Guthrie is that while there are many technical guitarists who can do amazing things with scripted, highly practiced lines, he can bang out insane chops almost without thinking. He's a stream of musical consciousness!

I don't mean to shit on your point but scales and improvisational solos are one of the first things lead players learn. Pretty much any guitarist learns to improvise musical solos after a while. What separates Guthrie IS the breadth of technical playing he has mastered. I'd argue his improvisational guitar playing is kind of rambling, on musical merit, but insanely technical and some of the runs are things it would take months for advanced players to learn to do once - and he can pull them out off the cuff.

I agree, and this is hard to do, because aesthetically you gotta feel the music (rhythm, mood, etc), then technically you gotta also understand how it's done (scale, modes etc, or simply use pentatonic is alright IMO, it's a tool as well), then physically you gotta have that stamina to endure multiple bends or shreds or whatever you're trying to do aesthetically and technically (I saw this video of Jason Richardson saying he gotta practice every day because the shreds he does demands stamina and endurance for doing it so long in minutes non stop). So yeah, all in all, Guthrie is a phenomenon from those aspects, to me at least. Sorry for the long post.

An amazing line up of guitarist should not be forgotten here & it's great to see Guthrie still searching or absorbing the notes he's about to play as I don't think he thinks that far ahead because he knows they are going to there for him to play them...

    I love Satriani
    I love Vail
But the last 2 know Guthrie is on a whole different level , but that's cool , as we are still getting these amazing musicians who are still playing & I worry of the day we have no new musician's coming in to keep it being passed on to the next generation...
Granted Guthrie Govan these amazing guitarist's are playing & keeping it going but for me I feel that when these guitarist's & many of great guitarist stop are we going to see someone stand up & take it to the next level or just a level that'll keep music alive as I surely hope so....

Guthrie has Broken through to the 4th Dimension Musically .. When i play guitar, its like the invention of the wheel. When Guthrie plays guitar its like Time travel through a Completely mapped out Universe ..

Virtuosity often lacks spirit when technical excellence is pursued over connection with the audience. This performance was for the performers, not the audience… and you can hear the small audience’s response as a result. Jazz may be excellent but it’s a self serving niche mostly. Enjoy!
