      @@vikramshetty271 This is just a blatant falsity. Not only could Guthrie play anything Buckethead has ever written, but so could Paul Gilbert. Paul taught buckethead and if you REALLY listen, Buckethead's shreds are just a mashup of the same ole Gilbert lick moved around the fretboard. When I was a teenager and first learning guitar, I was a Buckethead superfan as well. That was up until I had my horizons expanded.

    My 2 favorite guitarists. Guthrie is definitely the more versatile, more skilled, MUCH more improvisationally sound guitar player. But for my personal taste, no other guitarist has played the perfect melodies to my ears quite like JP. From Images and Words all the way to Distance Over Time, his note choice is just perfect. At a live improv setting though, yeah nobody is touching GG

      @@GeoffreySplaneChannel That’s fair, and I love hearing it as JP is my single favorite of all time. But I just meant that Guthrie has a broader range of skills. Like JP, Guthrie has top tier alternate picking, tapping, and sweeping (though he doesn’t prefer using it much), but he also has things JP doesn’t use like hybrid picking, insane funk rhythm, straight up country finger picking, jazz fusion playing, etc. Add to that the skill of absolutely mind blowing improv, and I think he just has more in the toolbox

And Jon Finn, who many of my Berklee Students have studied with, I have corresponded with. I feel some sort of relation with all of these great guitar players. Not just personal hero's, but as "Guitar Bro's. We guitarists should consider all other striving, and performing guitarists, as bothers of the same crazy cult. JP for me is the best composer, for my taste. But Govan is the best performer and have the biggest pallette of sounds. Is immense the quantity of sounds he can produce. But in studio JP has a composer is the ultimate machine, but nowadays he is just a remixer of himselve. In the old times with Ibanez petrucci was more out of the box and more complex in the creation process. I believe that the instrument is always a limitation. That music man must be supreme but the sound is always the same, with Ibanez petrucci had more bite and with that comes other ways of producing sound that fits the personality of the instrument too. The supreme quality of petrucci sound comes to a place where it is over processed (not that is over processed, but is the type of sound that my ears recognize has processed/studio quality). Seeking perfection isn't always the place where you want to be, the limitations is what gives the guitar the sound of a guitar, if you know what i mean. Anyways, just my opinion, not the truth, there is no thing like "the truth". If you read this John, this is not a bad critic just me recognizing your process of evolution and of seeking your dream sound, that's what makes you and the epic sounds you have produced your whole live. It is what makes your constructions has an artist.

    • @enman009
      @enman009 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      An interesting take indeed. However, when it comes to production and playing, Petrucci is much better now (seems like he polished his upward picking since the Six Dregrees days). I agree that DT sounds similar nowadays, and I wish it was more different, but that's expected considering they have +15 albums. Liquid Tension Experiment and JP's solo project, though, are completely unique and shows how versatile John truly is. Highly recommend those two last albums.
      Govan is an inspiration. No way to put it. Although he's not as strong as a composer/songwriter, his energy on improv is pretty cool. If he worked his structure and licks even more, he would be unstoppable!

      Guthrie alcanzó un nivel teórico y práctico con la guitarra tan alto que le permite superar cualquier limitante en cuanto a expresión, puede explayar cualquier melodía o sentimiento que se le venga a la mente, todo lo teórico y práctico, como escalas, formas de tocar y demás, pasó a segundo plano, debe ser algo inconsciente para el, a si como un escritor profesional ni piensa en los tiempos verbales o reglas sintácticas de manera "consciente" a la hora de expresarse, sino como algo ya incorporado, automático, sólo se centra en la idea que viene a la mente, directo de su imaginación y eso mismo le da la libertad de entrar y salir de cualquier género. Lo único, es que creo que a veces peca con un exceso de velocidad, cuando su máximo potencial esta en su feeling épico.

    A shout out to the amazing drummer who really enhances where the lead player is at and where he's going. Everyone here is such a talented and tasty player.
    Guthrie's improvisation skills are clearly way ahead of everyone elses. I wish he was able to compose more metal band type songs as a side project. I wonder if he could generalize his lead skills to hard rock or metal type songs with a singer?

    Guthrie is in a different place to most guitarist so there are no comparisons. He is very organic and have an extreme knowledge and technical skill that is rooted in fusion. Petrucci is just tight and furious with a ton of passion and his vibrato is superior to most. I prefer listening to Petrucci because I can soak it up although I have nothing but respect for Guthrie and he blows me away but it takes work to listen to him. Much like the Vai/Satriani thing.

    • @MusicLessons
      @MusicLessons  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great analysis. Petrucci used emotion more and Govan made the guitar "dialogue" as if in conversation.

    • @konodeamerika

      @@MusicLessons I agree with both of you. My personal experience is that despite the fact that I've been John's fan for 20 years and that I have nothing but love for him ... after listening to Gutrhie's his solo sounds automatic, struggling to find the right key and using speed to cope with lack of knowledge. I think that Satriani, Vai and John are somewhat similar, Satriani is the most musical one with that bluesy tone, Vai is pure show, but a great player too . And Petrucci is kinda in the middle, best of both in one plus the power. Maybe it´s because I'm more of a jazz musician that I think Guthrie is the best of every guitar legend put into one musician, is simply outstanding. An endless cascade of ideas
