Band Maid is Hard Rock. Baby Metal is Metal.
"Thrill" is a 2014 released song. This song is meant to be heard loud, cranked up while driving.
They are a bit stiff, no? They were young then, just starting out. Saiki (vocal) was like 18 or 19 then. Yeah. As may have mentioned before. Three of them, Misa, Akane and Kanami are all classically trained musicians. They got signed up quickly by a label soon after their formation because their talent is no joke.
If I may, here is the story.
In 2013, Miku Kobato (rhythm, back vocal) was working at a maid cafe (Japan, of course) and had this dream of forming a hard rock band. She was working part time there because she was in a failed J-pop idol group for 3 years prior which was not successful (In Japan, failed idols don't make a lot of money). So, one day she looked up a guitarist online and found Kanami Tono who used to upload her songs online as a solo musician. They talked and met and Miku had her guitarist. Kanami learned piano for 16 years and guitar for 8 years at the time. She plays keyboard on stage sometimes.
Then, Kanami brought along her friend Akane Hirose (drums) who used to back her up for percussions on some of her songs. By the way, this time Miku told the two that they were going to wear maid outfits. So, Akane said okay after some thinking. She is a graduate of Tokyo School of Music (same level as Berklee School of Music in Boston) and played piano since young and learned drums at school along with trombone.
Akane then brought along Misa (bass), her school mate. Misa learned piano since 3 yrs old and graduated with bass as main axe. There Miku had her band.
But, that didn't last long (I heard around 4 months) because Miku realized her voice did not fit the music genre they were playing. So, they decided to have an audition for the main vocal position.
There came the ice queen Saiki Atsumi who was at the time signed with the then same management company as them. She was a solo singer/dancer at the time. (yeah, i know)
So, then they had their five piece band and history is what it is.
By the way, Miku is a bit crazy (for good) and is called a little pigeon. She talks with ending sentences in "po". She is the most comfortable in front of cameras among them due to her years as an idol. She is the most hard working ambassador for her band. She writes almost all of their lyrics now since around 2016 I think.
Kanami is the main music composer, then Akane and Misa add to the music and with Miku's lyrics, they draft their songs then Saiki adds her almost final opinion on a song.
I think these gals gel very well together and seriously, THEY DO NOT HAVE A BAD SONG.
Oh, and Miku got forced (LOL) by Kanami and Akane to learn guitar after forming the band. Kanami is her teacher and she is good now.
    Inside jokes are:
    Mikus is a crazy pigeon
    Saiki is an ice queen
Misa likes to drink whisky at concerts
Akane loves eating all the time
and Kanami is a huge Saiki fangirl

She likes whiskey, beer, whatever. The whiskey on stage thing started in Germany. She comes across as such a badass, and had mentioned drinking as a hobby, so a fan left a bottle of whiskey on top of her amp head unit where she would find it. She smirked at the audience, broke the seal, chugged straight from the bottle, set it back on the amp and started the concert, taking a swig every now and then.
Audience loved it. So now it's practically expected and part of her stage character. Misa the barefoot (not always, but often) Ninja assassin hits the whiskey, picks up her 5-string and blasts our hair back. Boom.

Good evening you two! Miku, the twin tailed rhythm guitarist, founded the band after waitressing in a maid cafe, singing to people’s food to make it more delicious for about 3 yrs. This was 2013 and she recruited lead guitarist, Kanami, from a TH-cam video she’d uploaded. Kanami knew the drummer, Akane, from another acoustic band they’d played in. Akane brought in a friend from music college on bass, MISA. Miku chose Saiki from an open audition because she’d been liking her vocal style already. Miku then began taking guitar lessons from her own guitar player to make the music more layered and rich. 6 months later they were recording with an indie label and playing shows! This band was birthed through the iron will of a maid waitress who learned to play as she went!💪🏻🤘🏻

'Thrill' was on the 2014 3 song "single" 'Love, Passion, Matador', but did much better when it was reprised for the 2015 mini album 'New Beginning'.
We were thrilled when they brought back this song for the L.A. show in November.
It had been about a year and a half since they had played it.
Saiki definitely seemed surprised (at least at first) at the loud call and response, and people singing along to all the songs.
They mentioned in a recent interview that they could clearly hear the crowd shout "Hey!", even with their ear monitors in.
Even though they didn't write the music for this one (Miku contributed to the lyrics), it still has that great BAND-MAID sound.
This one is so early that the bassist MISA is still wearing shoes and a cutesy maid outfit, and Saiki, the lead singer had not yet taken a pair of scissors to her apron. : )

the prominent bass and guitar interaction. I have noted that too. You should listen to their
live Zepp Tokyo concert. There, you will find, 2 hours of songs that are mind blowing.I might add that I have never bought any foreign language albums in over 40 yrs and so far I have bought two of them.

Japan is really just musically different....in a good way. Musical artist in the East are not confined to a box as Western artist are. Band Maid has some earlier songs that are much more Jpop that hard rock/metal, and Baby Metal has lots of Jpop elements in their music. Japanese rock bands are not afraid to mix music styles and to do something different you may not be expecting. I especially like the Band Maid songs "Summer Drive," which is an awesome Jrock anthem and "Start Over," which is basically a pop song you would expect to hear on an anime. These songs show the versatility of these incredible ladies. They can be cure and sweet....all the while crushing your balls.

    • @Mind-your-own-beeswax
      @Mind-your-own-beeswax 3 ปีที่แล้ว

What are you talking about? Western music confined to a box? Utter shite. Maybe you’re listening to the wrong music from ‘western bands’

    • @rednab2001
      @rednab2001 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@Mind-your-own-beeswax This has been an issue for decades in the West. Especially among music fans. Western music fans typically like their artist to do one thing, and one thing only. Let's just say Metallica and Justin Bieber do a song together....both fandoms will hate it and accuse the artist of selling out. If you are a country artist....you do country. Rock artist do rock and pop artist do pop. They are fully expected to stay in their lane. Only the biggest of superstars can work in multiple genres and have it be accepted by most of their fans. The biggest and best example of this would be Michael Jackson. He could get away with doing any genre of music or any collaboration without catching flack. For the musicians, being experimental or changing your sound is a risky proposition. Sure, some do it, but it comes at great risk. The difference between East and West, is in places like Japan and Korea, their artist are expected to be able to perform multiple genres of music. It is fully accepted by their fans as well.

6:09 i have been struggling with this as well.
8:19 have to agree. whoever's responsible for recording the drums does an AMAZING job. MISA's always got a killer bass tone.. instrumentally, each member is always doing something interesting. they make full use of the audio spectrum.. they're tight as all heck.. no shoegazing when they're performing.. there's so much energy in their songs
..and on the flipside of things, they're such goofballs behind the scenes. no inflated egos. i don't understand how such a group came to be.. the talent, the humility, the chemistry, the individual efforts.. it ain't right!(not serious)
11:17 shout outs to all you reacters with the self control to not keep listening.. i could not do it
i agree with following along chronologically.. you can definitely get a sense of how they've refined and evolved their sound over the years

Unfortunately copyright strikes are done automatically. They use software to find their music and automatically send them out. The state of copyright (both in the US and internationally) is so messed up right now. I'm honestly more in favor of it collapsing rather than see it used more and more by corporations to stifle creativity and control creators. This is a great song tho. As far as why it's so good it's because most of them come from musical backgrounds and are all fans of both Japanese and British/American classic heavy rock and metal. The whole 'Band Maid' thing came from singer/guitarist Miku Kobato having worked in a Japanese 'maid cafe'. It's basically cosplay where the servers are maids and customers are either 'Masters' or 'Princesses'. It's meant to be a contrast to their heavy music as well as being inspired by anime.

    • @Tergipedidae
      @Tergipedidae 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Zidders Roofurry I’m not sure strikes are automatic. TH-cam does have automatic filters that check all uploads for copyrighted material, but if it gets through that (and most Japanese music does because it’s not in the library TH-cam uses to crosscheck) I think the labels or the industry association in Japans case probably finds the material at least partially manually. The sad part is that if the Japanese bands were in the system from the start there would be no problem. And again sadly I don’t think they will care about the message at the start of the video.
If TH-cam finds copyrighted material the uploader for some (I think most metal at least) can upload but give the right to monetize to the lable which is fair as the band has put a lot of work and money in to the music, and Kel and Rich seems to be of the same opinion as they haven’t monetized the videos that youtube doesn’t catch.

There seems to be an explosion of enormously talented groups coming out of Japan for probably a decade now. It is only recently that due to the exposures many are offered through TH-cam and other sites that they have gotten their due notice. You mentioned BABYMETAL in your comments, and I do strongly urge and warn you to check them out. In my opinion, there is no other group on the face of this planet that compares to them. But once you two do check them out, and once you two get over that wonderful "WTF?' moment that ALL of us have had, you will recognize what a brilliant concept the group is.

Hey Rich/Kel, hope you can get this. I started watching your channel in May 2019 when you first listened to Kansas. Then the channel stopped a few months ago. Unfortunately, I discovered Band-Maid October 2020. It would have been earlier if I started on your channel earlier. I'm 64 and my wheelhouse is 60's and 70's Rock and it took a few decades to find another band to be obsessed with. Your reactions to Band-Maid looks like me when I discovered them. I haven't missed a night watching them since October. Anyway hope everyone is well. Peace.

Band Maid just bring out quality hard rock song after quality hard rock song. They always find a way to produce interesting styles within each new song. Just beware of the copyright problem with their videos. I made a mistake doing one of their recent songs, as I was excited to discover it, and wham got a strike. I was warned by other TH-camrs, who had been hammered too, so had to learn my lesson. It is pretty random though, who gets hit and doesn't. Safe route probably their older material and live stuff. Good luck and keep up the good work.

Really dig their vibe!! Just wish they were in leather, but the maid outfits are catchy. Yes, they are really tight, good sound, pretty technical and on point. Probably from a strict musical up bringing and this is their time to break away and do what moves them. Good react.... Rock on and stay heavy!!

To me, what's makes Band-Maid so good is that at first look they seem to be a gimmick band. Then you listen in, and they just blow you away because they're just too good to be a gimmick band. Keep it going. Baby Metal should be a good react too.... also, check out Wagakki band. You'll be blown away by the fusion of their music.

Great choice. This was the first Band Maid song that I heard. They have such incredible groove. And the singer is very unique in how she sings rhythmically. Many singers kind of float "above" the song's groove and don't really connect with it. With the Band Maid singer, she interacts with the groove so strongly that it makes the music so much more engaging!

These girls definitely understand precision and how to arrange a song with an ear to melody, but they are not afraid to expand beyond that with creative guitar lines, bass solos and call/answer type stuff between Misa and Kanami, who just has a great feel for how to write a solo that is rarely gratuitous and generally always fits the underlying structure of the song. Also, Akane doesn't get the credit she deserves for her frenetic but always controlled drumming. She and Misa work so well together and form a strong and reliable spine to hold every song together rhythmically.
But again, they also aren't afraid to push boundaries, add embellishments, transitions and combine genres in a way that is both musically interesting, yet almost always catchy in a way that makes you want to sing along, even though we don't know the language. I know you'll be covering a lot of BM in the weeks to come, but don't sleep on the 2016 album release "New Band Maid" as every sing one of the 8 songs is damn good, but each offers a little something different.
Especially Before Yesterday, a song that has elements of both a melodic rock ballad as well as as a faster tempo hard rock song. And the way Saiku sings it gives it somewhat of an ethereal Don Henley "Boys of Summer" 80's ballad feel. Here's a link to their music video for Before Yesterday: th-cam.com/video/Zuj_-z5-06w/w-d-xo.html
Long story short, they are just cool ass chicks who know how to write and play amazing music.

Regarding copyright strikes, the Japanese music industry is nuts. It often seems to be random and the strikes comes in waves. Several sites will get hit at the same time. If you pause or talk over the video that seems to help but that is no guarantee. Sometimes a video is just blocked. Some people do the "link and sync", opening two browser tabs, in one you cue up the original MV then in your tab you give people a countdown to the start the paused MV. (1-2-3 click...). But you can't pause the music video and doen't work on cellphone browsers just on desktop ones. Live videos seem to be safer than any official MV. Good luck.

I agree. The first thing for me is the super clean production. The songwriting - the hooks and melody. The same reasons that made hair metal (I hate that term) super popular in the 80s. just my first impression.

Great band! I've seen them live three times over the last three years. They're always fantastic and great entertainers as well as players. I especially like their track Alone if you haven't tried that one yet.
Another Japanese band you guys may enjoy if you liked the slap bass in this track is DOLL$BOXX. They're not a straight up hard rock band like Band Maid and mix quite a few styles together with prominent keyboards along with some rock, funk, and metal elements for a unique sound.
I'd recommend Take My Chance or Loud Twin Stars as good song choices to start with if they sound like a band you'd be interested in checking out!

their later work from 2018 onwards is all written by KANAMi, who is classically trained, and an introvert usually but a monster when she takes the stage. So they all know music and are precision professionals. What no one seems to be saying is that they have creativity by the ton which is the secret sauce that comes through in their work.
