Thanks Benno. Great example of how to do this task. This was not as hard as other folks had made it seem. I would give this a 1.5 - 2 beards on the Beard Scale of Difficulty. Now my 2015 XG500 has a permeant Quick disconnect for topping her battery off. I stow the cable behind the coolant access panel when not in use. Much appreciation for all your efforts in making this handy video!
OMG what a stressful damn job this was my partners battery died on her 500 so i read the manual that came with it pretty much it was useless. I had a hard time getting that green fuse off bloody thing got the best of me it did so I left it and jumped on my dyna & went for a ride instead. I'll rip into it 2mrw for sure now I know how it comes off. Cheers bro thanks for that
Jut got a new to me xg500, second ride with it and the battery died. First thing I did was TH-cam a solution. Wound up here, and wow what an incredibly stupid place to put a battery. Thank-you for your video though, it explained exactly what to do, the framing was stable and in focus. There are too many people that want to put up 'how to' videos on YT and just film it freehand with an iphone. Usually with horrible results.
Thank you for the comment. It is really a woeful design and did my head the first time. filmed part of this on a gopro 3+ and the rest on an iphone. the horrible tutorials are what prompted me to do this one. Happy it has been a help. Benno
How would I hit the battery with a jumpbox? Is there somewhere besides the actual positive terminal on a 500 to do so? I can't figure it out. I've seen it on TH-cam before.
Possibly attach to the + terminal on the starter motor and - to the frame somewhere. Not sure if it is accessible though, dont have this bike now so cant check. Best bet would be to attach an extension for a trickle charger to the battery. Cheers Greg
My battery is completely dead is there a way I can just add a trickle charger and if so where would I get one that would be best fit for the motorcycle
Tyler, you will have to remove the battery as shown to add a trickle charge lead to the posative and negative of the battery. (available from HD or there are aftermarket items available on line) You will also need to fully recharge your battery prior to refitment. If recharging fails you will need repace your battery with a new one. Hope this helps. Benno
That black tube around 4:20 (I think called a vapor tube?) to the right of the battery that flops out from the bottom - where do you return it to after the battery is replaced?
Great Video! Benno, thank you! Followed the instruction, got the battery replaced, which is great! Just wondering where does the black pipe shown in your video around 4:16 connect to, is it suppose to be free hanging or does it suppose to connect to anything? Thank you in advance.
I dont know what HD was thinking when they designed this. Took mine all apart tonight, and now just have to remove the battery which is still screwed into the terminals.
Call me dumb but how the hell do you get the passenger strap off? It seems linked under the seat. Unless you unscrew it under near the tire. I just don't want to unscrew something I don't need to. If you can help thanks.
you will need to push the strap forward along the seat, compressing the seat foam, while pulling the seat rearward until the locating tongue comes free. Quite a bit of force is required. It is a pain in the arse and why I never reused the strap. The strap is bolted to the sub frame under the seat and is only accessible once the seat has been removed. Hope this helps. Benno
So did he end up switching sides on the bike to actually get the battery out? I’m trying to get mine out but in the video the camera angle switches up out of no where
on later models it is an integral part of the BCM. to disable the alarm turn the IGN key to the run position and disconnect the battery. This will stop the alarm from going off when the batt is disconnected.
Hey mate, thanks for the vid, very helpful, any idea where I've gone wrong, battery is back in, electronics seem to be working as they should, yet the bike won't kick over.
@@martynasMaz that's not something I have encountered with this model. Only thing I could suggest is to remove the main fuse located under the L/H pod while charging battery. This will isolate all on board electronics.
Jeez they dont make it easy do they. I was hoping to just pull the seat off and there it is like my KLR :D After I did hte first few steps and could not find it I thought I better resort to youtube! Many thanks 2 u! Where are the easiest points to drop a trickle charger on? Do I have to rip the battery out to do that or can i clip it to the wiring somewhere to save pulling the battery out? (thanks a lot for sharing like #59).
@@BennosShed Thanks for the upload Benno. I just got a 2015 street 500 a week ago and there aint much on the web about how to work on it. I was hoping it would be similar to my grom where I lift the seat and the battery and fuses are right there. My horn does not work so I wanted to check the fuses first to see if that was it.
You need to disconnect the earth lead from the ground on the L/H side of the frame then pull the battery out far enough to get at the neg terminal. be sure to NOT to pull the earth lead out completely or it will be a total pain to re run. Hope this helps.
If it is an HD std alarm you will need to turn the ignition to the on position prior to removing the main GREEN fuse, do not start engine though, that should disable the alarm. if not std HD alarm you will need to check the alarm manufacturers web site for the proper procedure to disable the alarm.
It would be nice if you included the How to put it back together again. That’s probably the more important part. Any fool can pull suit apart, this just made me think that I better just take my bike in to the mechanic. .
This is exactly why I buy Japanese bikes. I love me a Harley but damn. Damn near gotta take them to a factory mechanic to do simple shit. Great video though.
Wonder why Harley had a psychopath design/engineer the XG? In all the many and various motorcycles I have owned over the past 47 years, I have never see one that comes even close to the insanity of this battery placement. Could be one of the reasons it's had a market fail.
Thanks for the guidance. The wife changed her own battery in her Street 750 in less than an hour!
Your welcome Al, Glad to be of assistance

G'day Robert, sorry mate made this vid 5 yrs+ ago so I cant remember who that was and cant find the original edit to check.
Thanks, I did it once before, but I didn't know to take the fuse out

I have a Black and Decker from walmart installed with a two pin quick disconnect that hides in the battery cover.
Do it once and done.
That black tube around 4:20 (I think called a vapor tube?) to the right of the battery that flops out from the bottom - where do you return it to after the battery is replaced?
Just poke it back in behind the rear break cylinder.

That is a breather and just points to the ground.

So did he end up switching sides on the bike to actually get the battery out?
I’m trying to get mine out but in the video the camera angle switches up out of no where
if you actually watched the vid you would know the answer
Benno's Shed i watched the whole thing without skipping, when your go pro died it just threw me off a bit
Is putting the battery back in reverse? Like do you put your earthing on after your battery's installed? And when do you put the fuse back in?
Yes install is exact reverse
Thanks Benno keep up the good vids 👍
Mate any idea where I’d find the Hd standard alarm battery?
on later models it is an integral part of the BCM. to disable the alarm turn the IGN key to the run position and disconnect the battery. This will stop the alarm from going off when the batt is disconnected.
They have GOT to be f'ing kidding. Poorest engineering I've ever seen.
YEP
Hey mate, thanks for the vid, very helpful, any idea where I've gone wrong, battery is back in, electronics seem to be working as they should, yet the bike won't kick over.
Sorry mate hard to hazard a guess without seeing the bike.Poss check that all the pins are in the sockets correctly. Just a guess.
replace the 3 v lithium battery in your fob
The idea on this battery setup was super stressful. Engineering fail
its pathetic really
My battery look like it has two rubber keepers on top of it that are not accessable. they are on top of the battery under the frame.
you will need to pull out sideways to where the electronics were removed. it can be very tight
Big help... many thanks.
Glad it helped
when you connect the battery charger, the motorcycle's right turn light turns on.
Any idea why it does it?
Is the ign turned on?

yeah with a demolition saw

Yep it is a terrible engineering example.
