Hey Man, great video... you are spot on with the diode resistor combo.. I tried everything to get my Drag specialties mini tach to read full RPM not just half . All but ready to give up.. everyone including whi I bought it from telling me it's the wrong tach that it won't work.. but it worked thanks to your set up.. much appreciated and mine bike is a single fire. 2015 Street Bob FXDB
Hello! did you happen to measure gap between handlebar brackets before installing tachometer mount there. just curious - if mount thickness is larger - then should be right side of handlebar is not tightening handlebar as it was? If you turn out bit left side bolts screws - is handlebar still fixed ok. Asking as as was thinking about same place where add tachometer and clock for shadow.
Hi, I note you say that you connected it first but it was only showing half revs. How did you connect it at first? I have two cables coming from the écu and connecting the yellow cable to either just the front or rear coil, I get no revs whatsoever? Any ideas?
I've fitted this exact tacho to a 2004 Sportster and intermittently it flicks to double rpm. Mostly reads correct but then sometimes reads double. I soldered to the coil wires and used the diode and resistor circuit. My earth wire is to the earth on the lighting harness for the pilot bulb. Any idea what could be wrong?
@@CarlRecktenwaldJr I have only just fitted the tacho so everything is new. It was fine for a few miles then I noticed it would sometimes read correct and sometimes double rpm. I think maybe the resistors are letting some intermittent continuity between the two coil wires making the tach behave like it has two dual fire coils connected. What are the resistors for? Could I just run with the diodes?
So now I've tried using just the diodes without the resistors but no reading at all on the taco. I refitted a pair of 100k resistors across the diodes and tried again. Up to now its reading what seems like correctly, but may be a bit low. I'll see how it goes when I ride it again...... I read on one of the forums that the crank position sensor can trick the ecu into behaving like a dual fire on start up if the ecu doesn't read it correctly. Don't think there will be a cure for that.
Hello. Which diode and resister do you think I need for my Suzuki Intruder 1400? Not even with the net I can make my RPM gauge work at all! If you could PLEASE help me out I’ll appreciated very much. Thanks in advance
+Paulo Silva which tach did you buy? You should have something showing on the tach. Might want to check all your connections and ensure yiu have good power and ground.
Hi there great video... just had a couple of questions if that's ok... 1. The x2 cables that you connected the Resistor and Diod to, are they power supply to Ignition Coil Front and Rear? 2. The Ground wire that you mentioned which is linked to the back of bolt that passes through the Ignition Coil Mount, I presume the other end of this cable is coming from Tachometer? I have a 2013 XL883L Sportster and am looking to install a LCD Digital Multifunctional Speedometer from China...the interesting thing is that on the Speedometer you have to select the number of Cylinders on the Bike? Im from London, UK any advice would be much appreciated before i get stuck into this project... Thanks and season greetings...😊
Thanks Carl, good video, just wanted to make people aware that some 500s and 750s have the built in tachometer. Don’t know if you can swap out the speedometer to get the function. I’d rather look at an analog gauge, but the LCD tach maybe OK for some.
I tried this, exact same bike but different tach. First try it read 0rpm on my tach. Second try it still read half the rpms and the engine light came on. Seems like it wasn't firing correctly. I used the exact same materials but it isn't working. Any advice?
Hi I bought similar rpm meter but I have two cables for light(black and red) And three cables for rpm work (black, green and yellow) How to install these?
Yes Carl I did try a commercially available tach adapter but it did not work at all. Then I tried the one that you made but I was unable to buy the exact value of components and tried that but it did not work either . So I just gave up until I saw your installation. How do we get in touch with one another but not through Utube? William Barnier

Carl. I am using the same tach on my 2016 Triumph Street Twin and of course I have the same problem you encountered. It only reads at one half rpms. Would you be willing to make up another wiring adapter with the correct resistors and such for me? I would gladly pay you what your time and parts are worth. I am not able to duplicate your results and am severely electricly challenged. Please help me. Bill B.
I tried but mine didn't work. I would really appreciate it if you could put one together for me Carl. I will pay you what ever seems fair to you for your time and trouble + shipping of course. Bill Barnier
+William Barnier ok the parts are cheap but have you looked at a commercially availed tach adapter ? With mine I do get a little tach bounce as the diode resistor setup is a little leaky. Either way just wanted to make sure you were aware that there are commercially available adapters.
+John M. Yes and yes. I looked at the wiring diagram and assume that the coil was dual fire. However after I got the tach I realized the tach was reading wrong and then learned that for the street you need the single fire tach and then you won't need to add the mod of resistor and diodes.
I don't know where you get this from. The explanation is fine. If you turn off the sound you can still follow the install from the pictures its so clear.
Exactly what I was looking for today. Thanks buddy 👍

Hello!

If you turn out bit left side bolts screws - is handlebar still fixed ok.
Asking as as was thinking about same place where add tachometer and clock for shadow.
I didn’t, thinking back that would have been a good idea though.
Perfect! Just installed on a sportster 1200 from 2008
Do you get accurate reading bro?
Nice install
Hi, I note you say that you connected it first but it was only showing half revs. How did you connect it at first? I have two cables coming from the écu and connecting the yellow cable to either just the front or rear coil, I get no revs whatsoever? Any ideas?
I connected it directly to the output wires of the coil. That showed half revs. Than I add the resistor / diode combo. What model / year do you have ?
I've fitted this exact tacho to a 2004 Sportster and intermittently it flicks to double rpm.

Has it always done that flickering? If it just started it might be the diode or resistor going bad.

It’s 2.
There is a factory speedometer with a built in tach on the LCD display. Cycle the push button on the speedometer to see if you have the tach display.
Mine did not. I think the new ones have that option.

Great point. Appreciate that feedback.
Great tip, to bad they rarely put tach's on the bike from the factory anymore.
+walkingman I agree, sees like a simple and easy task no a days to have a tach.
Especially when service manuals require rpm specific procedures.
Nice work! Should have had this right from the factory! What's the redline just out of curiosity?
8000 it was Harley had listed as. 58hp at 8000.

Digi-Key or mouser.

Just diodes and a resistor.
Very interesting

Hello Carl, can you tell me what you used as a signal wire for your tach install
There is a trigger wire at the cool pack. I tied into that.
Thanks. Very nice.

Ok. Try taking those diodes and resistors out as you might have a single fire system.

Read this it talks about single fore and dual fire coils. I am not sure what the M50 has.
roubert.name/joakim/tach/
what kind of windshield you used on your bike..any help for this..thanks
+Raymond Montepio I got the Harley specific windshield. Purchased From Harley Davidson.
So with a tach made for a single fire coil, will any wiring change or will it just read more accurately?
+matthew hoehn single fire coil tach will regulate no wiring changes and yes it will read more accurate.

Would you consider installing the tachometer for a price on my 750

Please also install a fuel meter and make a video on it
+Sumit Ojha I wish Harley would sell an aftermarket kit, with tach, gear and fuel...
Carl Recktenwald Jr. Are you able to make something for that
+Sumit Ojha Not sure, there is no fuel float so the only thing you could make is a computer based device that uses miles driven to show fuel use.
Carl Recktenwald Jr. We can use trip meter for that... Reset trip meter every time I refill the fuel tank
exactly.
Mine has five wires, little black one big black one, green red and a yellow black stripped one
Not sure. What year? My 15 service manual does not show that.
So Carl, two questions;1. Are you saying that P/N: TR-493374, from this video, is the WRONG part? And....2. That a "single fire coil tach" will work?
