I love precuts and especially jelly rolls! Great tip on lint rolling them. I agree the pet ones are the best! I measure mine before I start too! ❤ great video.
My pleasure 😊 So happy this is helpful! When I was doing the research for this video, I couldn't find much on this topic either! I just knew I had to make this! In fact, most of my original topic changed when I realized no one explains these. Thank you so much for watching! 😍
I've never bought a jelly roll because they are too expensive in Canada. For example, $74.99. I cut my own strips and love to make the patterns for jelly rolls
Wow! That is a lot for them! I have video on how to make your own jelly rolls like I mentioned in this video. Maybe that’s a solution? I don’t blame you! So pricey.
from Gerry- I just made Donna Jordan's adjustable jelly roll race quilt. Free pattern and video- love the results. The jelly roll bins are a great idea. Be blessed.
Oh wow, love that storage box. Have never seen them before. I have a feeling though that by the time they reach Australian shores the price would be astronomical!!!!! I love jelly rolls too. In fact, funny you should have this video, as in November I am off to Bribie Island Retreat and I am making jelly roll placemats for Christmas presents. I have my spare jelly rolls folded up in a zip lock bag. They keep reasonable well in them but they get wrinkled. A proper storage box would be ideal. Loved this video Kris. I haven't forgotten you.
Hi! Oh, goodness, that sounds like fun! I wish I could go with you! Would it be less expensive if I sent you one? I can look into it. They are wonderful bins! So glad you liked this one! I think about you often. We will catch up soon. No pressure! 🥰
Hi Chris. Thank you for your video on jelly rolls. I loved the tip using a pet hair roller!!! It never occurred to me, but it will be in my sewing room ASAP. I have been using Art Bin boxes for a long time and have three strip boxes which come into play very often. It is so easy to look at the colors by laying the box on its side and they stay straight using the clamp provided. Happy sewing!🥰
You are so welcome!! So glad this tip helped! I am loving the bins so far. What a great product. I think I am going to get a few more. Thank you so much for watching and sharing! 🥰
This is a great video! I’ve learned the hard way bout measuring the width of my jelly roll strips! It worked out ok.. but it made things more difficult! And I love your lint brush idea! Definitely going to keep a lint brush in my sewing room from now on!!
Thank you so much! Yessss! They all seem to be different, even within a company. I alway measure. It can really throw you off, as you know. ❤️ Thank you so much for watching and sharing your thoughts!
Thanks for the overview! I bought one of those strip containers and ended up donating it. They slid around despite the holders if the container was stored at a tilt and it was difficult to find a long flat area to store it in as it didn’t play nice with other containers. I’m sure they work great for some spaces but be sure it makes sense for your sewing room before you invest. I find that folding strips in half twice lets me store them in a variety of drawer or basket units, and then I have multiple stacks that can be sorted by color, with a separate stack for shorter strips.
I have bought solids as strips to use for borders and binding. But as mentioned very expensive compared to yardage so watch for sales. Using the scraps from strips are my to to for scrap quilts ( ie potato chips).
I love the Art Bin strip holders! Each one can hold about 3 whole jelly rolls! I’ve got 2 scrap bins for my jelly rolls (sadly the brand name has diluted just like Band-Aid), one for low volumes and solids, the other for prints.
Hey great video Kris! I just ordered 2 of the ArtBin containers! I have all my stray jelly roll strips bunched together in a square bin, they get so tangled and wrinkled. I’m in the process of sorting all my fabric stash and these look ideal! Thanks for the info!
Thank you! So glad you like the video! I hope you like the containers as much as I do. What a difference! Love that I can see what I have and it tames them. Thanks so much for watching and sharing! ❤️
I love all the pre cuts! I'm also liking the new Vegas strips from Seah yeah 6 1/2" X WOF. Do I have a favorite? I don't think so, just depends on the pattern which one I'll use! One thing for sure, can easily make rugs and bowl's with the jelly rolls too!
I just love jelly rolls, honey buns, bali pops, rollie pollies, rollups, strips - all of the above! They make many patterns so very easy! and binding! I get the mottled pastel Walmart strip sets to bind charity baby quilts. 4 strips of 5 colors, and bingo, 5 quilts bound for about $8. you're pronouncing "selvedge" much better these days. Maybe there's still hope for me and some of my pronunciations! Now if I could just control my quarter inch seam. Maybe a jelly roll race to get a whole lot of practice in!
I do love jelly rolls and other precuts as they are very versatile and I like that you can get a piece of each design in the collection. What I don’t like is that as you say they don’t always evenly split the amount if the line has say only 20 prints you aren’t guaranteed to get 2 of each design. It’s also not easy to tell this by looking at them. Sometimes it’s easier to see what’s in a layer cake or charm pack from the same collection as they are usually made up of the same amounts of each fabric. I have seen a quilt made up with low volume fabrics and it actually looked really nice the design was really subtle and it almost looked faded by the sun giving it a lovely soft vintage look. I’ve found the 2.5” used to be to the valley now it’s usually to the top of the points. I do measure mine. Great tutorial, thanks for all the tips, the pet lint roller is a great idea.
I know what you mean. I hope my tips for that very issue helps you in the future! They are all things I use to see all of the prints in the jelly roll before purchasing. I hope it helps you, too! Thank you so much for watching and sharing your thoughts on this!
Thank you! I am using the bins I show near the end of the video. LOVE them! I am going to order a few more. Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
That was an excellent summary of what 2.5” strips are and the various names they go by. When I unwrap a pinked edge one, it takes me 5 sheets of lint roller paper 😂
Thank you . I have several jelly rolls. They are like have the number mentioned in them. Mine are usually half the size package you are talking about from Joanne’s . I love to make bargello patterns from them. I cut a lot of my extra fabric to 2 1/2 in strips.i never was them.i hate the pinked edges.i try and stay away from them. I do have picked edges ones. Just don’t like them. I usually make my own 2 1/2 strips for left over fabric. Again,,,,, thank you.
I love when layer cakes show the colors on the back cardboard piece - unfortunately, this is not always the case, it depends on how they are packaged, too! It’s nice to be able to thumb through the real fabrics - and then some are wrapped completely in plastic with no indication of what the fabrics are and you can’t thumb through them! I like to see the fabrics but I have to live with what the different companies do and take a chance😀😀😀
I usually use a 2. One thing that can help with the bowing is if you sew on strip set from one direction and then flip it over and sew the next strip from the opposite different. You could also try pinning it well. That can help, too. Hope these suggestions help!
I have a few suggestions on my blog and have a few videos, too. Here’s one: th-cam.com/video/WPlodcqgQfw/w-d-xo.htmlsi=bWYru8Z68KDGpdyc Hope this helps!
My biggest problem with precuts is that I love them all and I just want to look at them, maybe pet them a little - they are all so pretty - but actually use them???🫢🫢🫢. I really need help😩😩🤗

I really had no idea Jelly Rolls were specific to Moda and the other lines used different names! What a fun fact for today!
Happy to help! ❤️
Same thing with Charms and Layer Cakes - Moda does them first. But honestly we all call them by the same names no matter the company 😃😃
@@sandybruce9092 that’s so interesting. Thanks Sandy!!
I never thought to use the card to take a picture in BW. That is an awesome tip!!!!!
