88-91 CRX DX idle surge fixed!!!!!

  • What's going on TH-camrs. If you own a 88-91 CRX DX with the factory D15B2 engine and have that annoying idle surge, this may fix your problem. Before u start, make sure that you have exhausted all other options and troubleshooting as I did. Don't ever just throw parts at a problem because you'll be even more frustrated by losing money in the process. I paid absolutely nothing to fix this in parts and it only took about 15 minutes to do. If you rather change the throttle body completely please feel free to do that. Hope this helps anyone else out there with this problem and PLEASE feel free to leave any comments or questions you may have.

Holy shit dude I had tried everything! I was just about to look into getting a new ECU until I found this video. I didn't even remove the dash-pot. I just popped the nut on the throttle plate loose, turned it maybe 180 degrees. Boom. solved. I wish I found this before replacing the IACV, MAP sensor, O2 sensor, and spending 5 or 6 weekends on this. Thanks a ton!

Wow! EXCELLENT video! My 1990 Honda Civic 'D15B2' can be driven again! I had already spent $750 with a shop attempting to resolve the issue (IACV, etc.). A half turn of a nut was all it took! Thank you so much!

Thanks to your unselfish act of posting this video, I, an many others can extend the lives our 88-91 honda crx/civics. I had this problem for ~1.5 years, 20,000 miles before I found the solution. Never would have thought a nut would be the issue.

You are a blessed human being. This heavenly 11mm bolt not only corrected the majority of my idle surge, it made my civic quieter, smoother shifting (I have an auto LX sedan), and less shaky. And I didn't even loosen it as much as you did, just one rotation with the socket!

Dude....I can't believe it. I legit popped my hood and come to find out my nut was SUPER loose on my throttle. Just tightening it up completely fixed my idle after I replaced my IAC, did plugs and wires, even messed with the idle screw. And the whole time it was exactly what you just did. Thank you so much. Didn't even think to tighten that down. ✌🏽 thanks! From the guy that was about to throw a wrench through the windshield lmao

Thank you so much I checked everything on my 88 crx d15b2 ... It was surging between 1200 all the way up to 2100 rpms ... Rapidly!!! And I couldn't figure out the problem at all!! I did what you did and just loosen that bolt... And boom the idle dropped and settled... No more surging and it was idling smoothly also settled at 800 rpms... Very excited and thank you so much for this video.. I would have never figured it out and would prob replace a lot of things.. You saved me money..time...and hassle... Thank you again man

Yo D!!! I have had this surging issue ever since we replaced my engine about 9 years ago. It wasn't bad at first ,very intermittent with the weather, but lately it had gotten so bad I couldn't even get the smog guy to look at it. I had replaced the IACV with a used one. That didn't work. fixed all the vacuum leaks, that didn't work. Then I finally did a search and found this video. Problem solved so far. I even tested it by tightening the nut back a little, and the dang thing started idling funky again! Thank for doing the research! You saved me a ton of money and time.!

Thank you so much. Have a 90 DX sedan 1.5 D15B2 , 105,000. Just replaced the head and all the gaskets. Its been out of service for about 6-7 months. Started just fine. Let it warm up so I could set the timing. It starts to do exactly this. Talked to my son and he say "it does that sometimes." What?!? An he never mentioned it. Started Googling and found your video. Sounded too simple, but you did a great demonstration of the problem. I first tried a drop of oil where the pivot contact points are. That got rid of the hunting, but the idle remained over 1100. Turned the bolt 1/4 turn. Idle dropped to 800-840! Let it run for awhile. Idle remained steady. Went up when the fans came on and dropped back to 800-840 again afterwards. So awesome! Was then able to adjust the timing. Car sounds great! Thank you again and appreciated you giving a shout out to Eric the Car Guy. I've learned a lot from him too.

The problem on my 88 civic D16A6 was the Coolant Temperature Sensor. It communicates with the IACV and it controls how much fuel is delivered to the engine. When it goes bad, itl tell then engine to add more fuel, so you get random surges like in this video. The Coolant Temp Sensor sits right under the distributor, so its easy to replace and only about $20. So its worth a try!

After loosing my distributor on my 91 dx hatch and missing timing, i changed my timing belt, water pump, adjusted valves warrantied my wires, new plugs etc. got it all running and first start up my engine raced. Scared the fuck out of me. Messed with the throttle cable and t seemed to help but surged when I loosened it enough. Tightened it and ran to high. So I thought what you did and maybe adjust it. Wanted to look seeing someone somewhere has had this issue before. Just wanted to double check. Looked at Eric the car guy. Have that same engine and intake etc from my old 93 but 91 is still dual point. Thankyou for being the person I found first to confirm what I was thinking

This fixed mine immediately, thank you. It also immediately gave me a check engine light for #7 tps. I had a wildly surging idle and no 4th gear before so it's an improvement.

    • @southshoregraphics
      @southshoregraphics 5 ปีที่แล้ว

@johnny Macon Thanks good advice. Have to track down where the 4th gear pressure sensors are. I blasted the solenoids with brake fluid but they didn't seem to need it. Been adding more Lucas and seems to get better every couple ounces i add. Hesitate to put too much. I have an external cooler i'm planning to add too.

While this fixed my idle surge temporarily, the underlining problem was a leak in the brake booster. Hard to detect that leak... New brake booster, perfect idle.

THANK YOU HUCK :) after messing with everything and months of searching on google finally my 1989 honda civic lx is running like its supposed to thanks to this video. I got oil in the spark plug wells and was overheating without losing much coolant. I still need to drive it for a couple days to see if this fix helps my overheating. I mention the oil in my spark plug wells because like me someone else might be thinking that this would cause a misfire and therefore give idle problems. BUT TRY THE FIX HUCK GIVES BEFORE BUYING OR PLANNING ON BUYING MORE STUFF. THANKS AGAIN HUCK AND HAPPY NEW YEAR. :)

carlos arellano thank you for your reply!
I actually tried that 2 weeks ago and I noticed it diminished the RpM Drops by just a little.
But I found that my problem was my IACV.
I removed it myself and cleaned it inside and out and replaced the 8 shape gasket. Used a 90-96’ civic gasket btw. . Installed it when it was fully dry and BOOM! fixed my problem. Your advice is extremely helpful though to anyone reading this. Thanks Carlos.

Well I continued to mess with this nut and so far it's fixed. I did have to adjust my throttle cable because it was too tight making car idle high. I don't understand why this works but it did

+Tony P - Here is how I understand it..... By adjusting... You are letting the AIR in so the Engine have enough Air to burn properly. Try taking off your EGR Wire Harness when the Engine " HOT / WARM " to see if it will stop. See the Video I made here if you need help further: th-cam.com/video/pkb1FasEMsU/w-d-xo.html
