- Today was my first day back in Saigon, Vietnam in almost a year and I definitely made up for lost time! I headed out on the ultimate Vietnamese food tour of Ho Chi Minh City with no other than @MaxMcFarlin This was Vietnamese Street Food at its finest!
I started with Bánh mì chảo - 50K VND (72 THB - £1.60 - $2) which was from a 30 year old shop in D1. This is the perfect breakfast if you're sick of pho.
Next we headed for Bò nướng lá lốt mỡ chài - 80K per set (115 THB - £2.55 / $3.25)
The lá lốt was the best I've had anywhere and the mỡ chài is likely the best I'm going to have anywhere.
Directions to everywhere we went:

My name’s Gary and I’ve been living in Bangkok for the past five plus years and travelling Thailand for over ten. I’m obsessed with Thai street food and it’s that obsession that led me to start this TH-cam channel. I want to share my favourite hidden spots in Bangkok and the rest of Thailand so you can fall in love with authentic, local Thai food as much as I have!
I’ve never understood travelling to a town or city and not eating the local food. How else do you really connect with a place? Let’s get out and explore together and I guarantee you’ll find a whole different side to this wonderful country.
If you love seeing off the beaten path, non-touristy, local life and authentic local life in Bangkok and Thailand then this is the channel for you. If go go bars on the Sukhumvit Road are more your thing (I’m not judging) then maybe not!

One of the joys I get in eating most Vietnamese dishes is the preparation or assembly of the food into the final product. Like putting different stuff into the rice sheet, or grilled meat wrapped in large lettuce, even the noodle I get to add different condiments into the bowl. It makes me feel like I had prepared the food, as if I'm the cook; while in reality I can't cook anything.
100 percent agree!
Awesome video Gary! The food looks amazing!!! I think I prefer Vietnamese food over Thai……and I’m Thai😉 When I was in Udon Thani 3 weeks ago, one of my favorite restaurants is a Vietnamese restaurant! Thanks for posting this:)
Thanks Marietta! The Viet food in Udon Thani is so good
Just missed you in Saigon! Left last Tuesday after an epic eating adventure between Saigon and Hoi An. In 11 days managed to eat 14 Banh Mi from 10 different vendors, never a bad one! My favorite was on Co Giang Street, not far from the touris jungle of Bui Vien, 20k for the best balanced Banh Mi of the trip and her pate is off the hook! Thanks for all the great inspiration Mate, made my trip!
Mate it’s so hard to get a bad one! 14 is good going mate 😅
Absolute banger episode. Maybe we have to explore Vietnam soon🙏 Greetings from Hua Hin. Few days left in Thailand 🇹🇭😎
Cheers Danny mate. Defo worth a trip 😎
Excellent work Gary 👌🏼 I love the basket of greens you get. Ellis took us to a similar place in Hanoi but we dipped the crispy wrap in water before loading them up
Love your collaboration with Mr Mcfarlin, absolute legends brother
Cheers mate, he's so easy to work with...if you can call it work haha
@@theroamingcook Hey Gary, enjoy your videos. Can I make a suggestion? Can you make a video telling your story.. such as what you did back in the UK, what brought you to asia, maybe even what visa your on, etc etc. I think it would help.
^ After typing this I went searching and found it eventually. Maybe can make one a little longer and easier to find on your page.
Why did i click on this at 1am…. Thanks Gary
😅😅😅
Aah _bánh mì chảo_ and _bò lá lốt_ look so good! 🤤 I’ve never tried _chả đùm_ before, but I feel like I could almost taste it. I agree with Max, street food is just so good in Vietnam! 👍
Please let me know if you ever find yourself in Indonesia, I’ll gladly be your guide/cameraman/whatever. Cheers! 🍻
I’m hoping to come over this year so I’ll let you know 😀
@@theroamingcook yay! Please let me know waaay in advance so I can save enough money, because I’m from Borneo and I’d need to fly to wherever you’re going, and domestic flights in Indonesia are more expensive than international ones 😂
The food looked incredible! Another excellent vlog!
Thanks so much Henry
Excellent as always !
Cheers Gary
Glad you did this one, Gary, 'specially since you had said you might not post any of the Saigon videos. The breakfast was good and basic, but that second place with Max was definitely a keeper. I would love those betel leaf (or perilla leaf) kebab wraps, particularly with the glass noodles, lettuce, herbs and chilis. The dipping sauce sounds intriguing, and I would make that myself, but I wondered how they made it so creamy rather than dark and loose. I think of Vietnamese dishes as a bit less spicy than Thai, but all you had there looked good to me. I do have an older cookbook with Vietnamese roots, so I'll check out if they have a version of that sauce. And now, of course, I'm hungry.
Enjoy
Thank you!
Love and thank from Vietnam ❤
Those grilled meats looked amazing!!!
Bro, that is my favorite place to get banh mi chao in D1. The place you went with Max to eat bo a lot looks awesome. Maybe a place I need to try. Great video!
Thanks bro, definitely worth a trip to the Lo lot place

You make me hungry 😂. Enjoy mate
Haha thanks mate!
I am loving these collaborations. I can't wait till our next trip.
You guys got anything in the pipeline?
@@theroamingcook we hope to go to Bangkok and Saigon again in 2025. We followed a lot of your advice during our Bangkok visit last year and did not regret it. I think we got to about 4 places in your videos
Gordon Ramsay shared his feelings: "Vietnam is a place with many incredibly delicious dishes. I love Vietnam and love the food here."
Yummy and delicious beef. Don’t always see beef. I would go to this place for lunch / dinner. I am planning on staying near Bui Vien. Yum Yum more grilled beef on sticks.Looks like meatballs more and more I look at it. Absolutely Outstanding From Start To Finish
Those three beef dishes are part of seven courses of beef called Bò 7 Món. Its popular here in LA. Glad you guys ventured out past phở and bánh mì. Love both your content. Speaking of which, I commented on a past video you guys did about going to going Phở Vietnam in D3. Have you tried it?
Ah yes I remember! I did go and it was excellent!
Good food
When I watch this, I don't want to talk! I just want to eat! 😋
It was so good 😃
Welcome back to Vietnam I like your UK 🇬🇧 accent ❤🎉😮

Add “some” chilies. 😂. Max called that. You so spicy Gary! 🌶 🌶 🌶
Max hôm nay cạo râu trông trẻ hơn, đẹp trai hơn.
Hi Gary, welcome to HCMC. I live here now, for a bit at least, then maybe to ur backyard, Bangkok; not sure yet :) If u r inclined, explore D5 & D8, (ur 2nd place) There are more Chinese/Viet Fusion cuisine here, some only found in these 2 districts, I was born in Cholon.
Oh nice! How’s the move going?
Good. Still exploring the city, will take me a while to find all best local street foods, usually hidden in some alley, and not on Google maps, lol.
😋😋😋
😃😃😃

At last you have meatloaf you can sing: "I'd do anything for love"
Just kidding.... !!!!
Cheers.

Xin chào tôi là người việt nam 🇻🇳
Xin Chao 🇻🇳❤️😀
Hello 🙆♀️
That meatloaf is exactly like the filling for Vietnamese spring rolls but without he carrot
Your title is a bit misleading my English mucker...It should say My first day BACK in Vietnam! ;)
It really wasn’t meant to be mate but you’re the second person that’s said that haha. I’ll add the back in!
Mate, just curious, but are you in Vietnam for the monthly border run? The food looks great too! But is that part of the reason for this trip? Just wondering. I thought you didn't need to make border runs because of Helen's teaching gig .. but I could be completely making that up ha. Anyway, as I say, just curious .. as of course I'm thinking of what I'll need to do when I move to Bkk or CM.
No border runs mate, just wanted some bread haha. Also had to go to Hanoi so that’ll be after these Saigon vids
"So this is the Governor.." LMAO
😅😅😅

Max is very handsome
Did Max's head shrink 06:56?? 😂

Omg babe your neck veins though lmao, do you even lift? Lmao you should do vlog when you back in UK though, cause there are people who's interested in visiting UK such as myself you know. Me love you long time from US 😂
Let’s not beat around the bush mate weve been travelling to the Far East for 40 years and Thai food makes the rest look like dog shit
