  • "A Pup Named Scooby-Doo" is a 1988 animated show starring Scooby-Doo, Shaggy, Freddy, Velma and Daphne as kids solving mysteries around their hometown of Coolsville.
What could have easily resulted in a throwaway attempt to capitalize on the passing fad, turned out to be a worthy addition to the brand, accomplishing the rare feat of recapturing the familiar feel of the 1969 original, while introducing its own new take on the world of Scooby, influencing newer entries in the franchise, all the while, managing to remain wholly unique.
It may appear as just another silly kid’s show, but make no mistake, this was the most important moment in the history of “Scooby-Doo” since its conception. What did it do that was so pivotal, and what was it saved from?

As a child I loved it, and as an adult I still enjoy it. They weren't afraid to make a legit fun show while mocking the source material. But instead of pointing out the tropes, they embraced them and pushed them as hard as they could. Thanks for talking about this series most people choose to ignore for whatever reason.

I would've never known that the Scooby-Doo franchise laid dormant for a decade. There were so many different Scooby-Doo programs and baby reboots out there during that time.

First and foremost let me say that this video is totally awesome. I remember another video on this same cartoon where the guy said it was the absolute best Scooby-Doo cartoon ever and I couldn’t help but feel that he was trying to force his own opinion onto people. Your take was much more open and respectful and I really appreciate how you analyzed how this series came out at such a pivotal moment. This is indeed one of my favorite Scooby-Doo cartoons ever but What’s new Scooby-doo is always going to be my number one pick for the connection I had with it and the draw of the darker mysteries and even the way the characters started to feel more fleshed out to me but this cartoon is also equally amazing and I remember seeing it so much as a kid growing up that it left a huge impression on me and will always have a special place in my heart. Without a doubt every Scooby-Doo incarnation is amazing in its’ own right and different ones will be special to different people but the fact remains that Scooby-Doo has legitimately struggled with the passage of time and this is a grand example of how they once found a way to better develop the characters and the show itself. Truly incredible! Thank you so much for this review! You deserve a Scooby snack box and a mystery Inc award!

I appreciate your kind words! I only ever want to bring attention to the cartoons I make videos on. If it inspires people to watch the cartoon for the first time or recall fond memories, that's even better.
"Scooby-Doo" is one of the rare franchises like "Batman" or "Ninja Turtles" where the characters are evergreen to the point that they can seamlessly adapt to the comedy and tones of whatever time and genre they're thrust into. Not every version ends up successful, but the premise and characters are so timeless, we'll be seeing them forever, and that's fine by me!

@@marcusblackwell2372 they briefly toyed with the idea of using the Pup designs of Shaggy and Scooby (in Arabian attire since they were Alli Adin's genies.) in the Arabian Knights tv movie on Cartoon Network.
Hanna-Barbera (and later WB) always tried to make the Scooby Specials whatever the current show style was or at least something close to it.
In the Scooby-Doo Goes Hollywood tv movie they used the standard Where Are You looks.
During the Super Star 10 TV Movies the standard designs were updated to that of the 13 Ghosts for Shaggy as well as the use of Daphne's secondary Mysstery Machine in Ghoul School.
Arabian Knights used Adult designs in Pup Style.
The Big 4 had a Film-Quality look that later melted into the WNSD style which remained the dtv look Mystery Incorporated because Get A Clue as a whole was just awkward and more of a "placeholder" until Mystery Inc.
Beginning with Phantosaur, the movies up through Krypto used a sort of hybrid Film-Quality WNSD/Mystery Inc look aka the 13 Spooky-Tales (when regular episode length specials were made with this, 13 Spooky Tales was the "TV series" name used for "Mainline Scooby while Mystery Inc. was always meant as "Earth-2" and was called such upon it's release.) therefore we also never saw a Be Cool styled movie, and finally the last movie we got was a Guess Who style...which if we ever get another movie (like the planned Hex Girls feature) it should be Guess Who style until the next Scooby project comes along.

Since you didn't mention it in this video, I'm curious, have you seen the 2013 movie Scooby-Doo Adventures: The Mystery Map? It's loosely based on A Pup Named Scooby-Doo. It's done in puppetry, but uses elements from the show such as similar character designs, the characters living in Coolsville, and the characters dancing during the songs. This is the closest thing we've gotten to a Pup Named Scooby-Doo revival.
With Scoob, I loved how we saw the gang first meet as kids at the beginning along with the whole recreation of the original Scooby-Doo Where Are You theme. Sadly, the rest of the movie went downhill after that as it became a cliche road trip movie with Scooby and Shaggy while the rest of the gang were mostly abandoned from the story in favor of the crossover stuff. I wish they just focused on the gang for this first movie and saved the Hanna Barbara cinematic universe stuff for later in the series. I was disappointed that its sequel, Scooby-Doo's Holiday Haunt was shelved after being nearly completed. Not only was it unfair for everyone who worked on it, but I have a feeling I would have liked it more because it focused on the Scooby-Doo gang as kids solving a mystery which I feel the first movie should have been.

I remember enjoying this show fairly well but I mostly preferred the original series. I remember that I was five years old when I saw the OG show and I was ten when A Pup Named Scooby-Doo. I was kinda taken out of the experience when they’d directly asked me if I was paying attention as if it literally felt like something out of Blues Clues. I’m also a tad mixed on the chase scenes. Don’t get me wrong, they’re catchy and well sung but I feel it was a bit more comedic when songs had nothing to do with episodes. For example: the Creeper episode’s song was about daydreaming and literally spending time with a pet ostrich of all things. Also while Fred’s active imagination was admittedly pretty funny, I sometimes felt like everyone’s reactions could get a little stale with how many times they used that joke ( at least that’s just my personal opinion). But all that aside, this is still a great👍 video.

I totally understand where you're coming from as far as some of the jokes being predictable. Many of the same gags are reused throughout all three seasons, but for some reason they tickled me the right way into wanting to see how they executed them next. The songs are nonsensical but I happen to find that funny as well. Jenkins, Red Herring, Fred's conspiracies, Scooby feeling protective of tiny Velma; all things that are repeated over and over again that I just can't help but love! And thank you! The next one is already in the works.

I do enjoy the 2002 Scooby-Doo live-action/animated hybrid movie. Despite it being written by James Gunn. And he actually wanted to ruin it, because he originally wrote it to be a hard R rating, with lots of blood and gore.
The main issue I had _(spoiler for a 22 year old movie)_ was them making Scrappy the villian. I hated that. I always like Scrappy. And a lot of vitriol was thrown at Scrappy after that. Just like I always loved Jar-Jar Binks. And finally, my generation is adults now, and we can proudly show our love for Jar-Jar. That would be a great one! I can't believe it's been twenty years since I first saw it in Imax theaters!

@@ItsTheGooseItsTheGoose I know right! I should totally be part of it too! I wanna gush about my intense love for it! It’s a Top 2 movie for me. And also the animation really doesn’t bother me even today!

This and Muppets were the only "babyfication" programmes I watched. The others felt so bland, but these two at least made an effort to do something interesting with the gimmick.

"Tom and Jerry Kids" was a good one, too. If "Muppet Babies" can get a reboot, mayhe someday "A Pup Named Scooby-Do" can, too!

It's better than the Flintstones or T&J kiddie reboot, though I didn't like it as a kid, it's better than I remember. It's less novelty and more contemporary humour.
It doesn't age well, like Animaniacs or Tiny Toons, but someone in the team did try.
... A drug bust episode ? I didn't think twice about it as a kid, but that's lightning in a bottle only in the 90's for a kids show.
"Dexters Lab" the other exception 😅

It was such an out-of-the-blue storyline that involved using dolphins to smuggle drugs, which oddly seems like something that would have been in the original "Scooby-Doo, Where Are You?"
It seems like every show in the 80s and early 90s had its anti-drug episode, and it all came to a head with "Cartoon All-Stars to the Rescue". What a time to be alive!

@ItsTheGooseItsTheGoose Good point, but Scooby and friends were not in the "Cartoon All" episode.
Funny since Bugs, Daffy was there along with Mike and the Chipmunks.
      Some are HB licensed characters.
Maybe they didn't want had a space to Scoob and the gang there until a few years later when this show came out

No Scooby, no. It seems like the only time characters get together is never in the way fans want them to. At least it was for a good cause!

      @ItsTheGooseItsTheGoose I didn't realise that yet 😯
They used to end up in an inconvenient situation and would use their talents, more or less, but here they are looking for the "mystery" before it finds them.
Whether people like them being more helpless and lucky or childishly motivated, that's a good difference 🙂
If I could recommend "Time Squad" or "Fat Dog Mendoza" since you're such a CN fan like me 😇
P.S. Yeah, they are concerned more about Scooby than before. When he goes out of his way here and, like a team, they are concerned instead of being clueless keeping fingers crossed for their K9

A Pup Named didn't save the series.

Would they continue making more Scooby-Doo cartoons regardless of how "Pup" did? Probably. But would it have been with the original five or back to solving mysteries in the way we're now used to? If "Pup" didn't do well, that may not have been the case!

@ItsTheGooseItsTheGoose Yes they would. But A Pup Named Scooby-Doo did not save Scooby-Doo from getting canceled. Scrappy-Doo (Hate him all u want) saved the show from cancelation.

I wasn't saying it saved the franchise from being canceled, I was saying "Pup"'s success saved the franchise from the directionless trend of frequent lineup and format changes it had experienced the last decade or so to that point. Maybe it did or maybe they would've continued down that route either way. Who knows!

I disagree. I never watched it. It didn't make me love or know about or rerun to the series. I liked he series because of all he 1930s , 40s and 60s era celebrity cameos Pup Named Scoobyy was a IMO non-canon and lesser version of Muppet Babies
Now if you wan to say Muppet Babies was important you would be right. That show introduced me to muppets and o every movie they imagined o be part of. Bu I enjoyed Scoobyy with out seeing his series. If any thing saved it, I would credit he direct o home video films.

There's definitely a version of Scooby for everyone which is pretty cool. Muppet Babies is great too, probably the only other "kid version" show with a great legacy!
