Cardin Winchester alludes to Henry Beaufort, who is widely believed to be the one who oversaw the trial of Joan of Arc. This allusion has had the following influences on the character and show: Henry Beaufort was a Cardinal and a Bishop of Winchester. As reference to this, Cardin's full name is Cardin Winchester, and he chooses the Black Bishop piece during the initiation. His scroll ID is 1374-BEAUFORT. In Volume 1, he bullies Jaune Arc, who alludes to Joan of Arc. His weapon, The Executioner, is a reference to Henry Beaufort overseeing the execution of Joan of Arc. The actual story of what happened is unknown. The are stories and legends of course. The formal record does not include Beaufort's presence at her execution but legend has it that he wept as he viewed the horrible scene as she was burned at the stake. This legend derives from what is now known as the Rehabilitation Trial of Joan of Arc which culminated in an examination of numerous witnesses in 1455 and 1456 in which one of the 27 Articles of Enquiry was that Joan had died in "such a manner as to draw from all those present, and even from her English enemies, effusions of tears." In keeping with his team's bird-themed naming, his first name is likely also derived from the cardinal, an American bird species. This also keeps with the Color Naming Rule, as male cardinals are red birds. His first name may also be an alternate spelling of Carden, an Irish name meaning "From the black fortress". Interestingly, Winchester also means "legionnaire encampment". The word "Faunus" is derived from Faunus, who is the Roman god of forests, wild and nature. He is also the Roman equivalent to the Greek god Pan. Faunus are associated with Satyrs, which incidentally have a less Human morphology than the Faunus people shown in the show. The Indigenous Name for the Faunus Derives its general meaning from the term Fauna, which generally means All of the Animal life present in the moment. For professor oobleck. From the Middle English Bartelmeus, a cognate of the Late Latin Bartholomaeus, which is from the Greek Bartholomaios (son of Talmai). Talmai is an Aramaic name meaning "hill, mound, furrows." This brings green colors to mind. His last name "Oobleck" comes from his allusion to the Dr. Seuss story Bartholomew and the Oobleck. "Oobleck" is also the name of an inexpensive, white, non-Newtonian fluid made from cornstarch and water which is known for being a liquid when subject to little force but being a solid under high force. Story Oobleck's desk was jokingly compared to the common state of Monty Oum's in the Volume 1 directors' commentary.

I don't think toxic masculinity is the issue. He comes from a family of warriors and war heroes, but he literally grew up as the lil brother to several sisters. We are not even sure if his father s around. So what he hears about the legacy of his male ancestors is how great they were and then there is him, always feeling inferior to his sisters. His sisters and mother probably did not realise they made him feel inferior. As someone who also grew up mainly among women as my father worked a lot (not rare above 90 h a week, at times surpassing the 100 h mark) I know how strong women can be. What I also know is how inferior they can make you feel without noticing it if you do not live up to their standards.

Jaundice part 1 has one of my least liked scenes in the whole series, if only because I find it infuriating when characters who supposedly can't stand bullies and bullying literally sit around and do nothing about it, especially considering what we later learn about many of the members of JNPR and RWBY.
