we need more dan salvatos in this world. thanks for actually taking it one step at a time instead of completely overshooting the goal. this has to become tournament legal.
One Blue Boi Modding melee would only be a problem if we changed important features. Dan Salvato is just making every controller play the same, fixing the problems with melee and making melee more accessible. Also melee is not a perfect game. Controller issues are a glaring problem and I say UCF should be tourney legal
Kyo Ani it sounds like you dont understand the debate at hand. a lot if not most controllers are capable of performing dash back out of crouch out of the box. some controllers cant. it is literally as easy as hitting the stick over so that you dash. from crouch. its not a technical skill that takes time to master. its a controller dependent skill that most controllers have and some do not. im guessing your controller cant dash back out of crouch? so you consider it game breaking? im a bit lost. furthermore EVERY single top melee player has a contoller with perfect dash back out of crouch. all of them. hense "ending the controller hunt". it hasnt broken the game at a top level, and the only way it breaks the game at a lower level is that players like yourself with bad controllers will be at a disadvantage to players that spend weeks and hundreds of dollars fining a "good" controller.
Only melee purists I think would disagree. It isn't 100% pure vanilla melee technically, even though it doesn't allow for anything that couldn't exist in vanilla melee. However, this fix is something the community desperately needs and the whole point of even playing it at this competitive level is just for us for the community. So the "sanctity" of the game or whatever, doesn't matter. We could be playing with items if the community wanted. We decide how we play melee.
Dan continues to be a pillar of the community, someone we can stand behind and support. Of course with thanks to everyone included, but Dan being the frontline image and presentation helps.
Please, I know all of you only care about Doki Doki, but can you take a second to appreciate Dan's other work, and more importantly, the Smash Bros Competitive Scene? Please, you don't have to take much interest, but search up "20XX Tournament Edition" maybe...perhaps look at some of Dan's videos. Admire his work for the Smash Bros Community and his few Netplay videos. Just please, this is a Melee video and you're all talking about a well-made visual novel that has nothing to do with Smash Bros, just look at a damn melee video, look at M2K, watch HungryBox, play melee, just please DO SOMETHING TO DO WITH SMASH BROS. PLAY SM4SH! PLAY 64! HECK PLAY BRAWL! PLEASE! Just make a comment relevant to the video's content...please...
Dan Ive spent awhile of my smash career thinking you were awesome. The first live tournament I tuned into was Apex 2013 with the Links vs Stinks crew battle, which you of course played a big role in orchestrating, playing, and commentating for. That, along with some screwattack interviews with PPMD, got me hooked into the game. When we are in this fiercely competitive and somewhat needy stage of the game, it makes me glad to see you as a strong force in calming my nerves about the direction the game is going. Thank you for keeping Melee's head on straight.
Thank you for making doki doki literature club, i don't how the hell did you manage from being a speedrunner and making a universal controller fix into developing a visual novel and a pretty unique one as a matter of fact, but more power to you my man
I became your fan. After playing DD I had chills and quite fear in the beginning, but I did not like the end of it and I started all over again. That end made me cry but also scored for my whole life. Great job, you deserve it. Congratulations
Dan Salvato is one of the few people who has vast knowledge on every aspect of video games, whether it be from speedrunning, modding hardware, or programming games of his own. Hopefully he'll be able to continue his work in the future. I'm personally excited for projects he has planned in the future.
As a major Super Smash Brothers fan (especially of Smash 4 and Melee) I am so proud we have people like you in the community. Excellent work on Dokie Dokie Liturature Club I hope are proud of yourself. I did not get to play Dokie Dokie Liturature Club for myself I actually watched Gt live play it and still I am super invested in the characters. If you made a squel I would 100% play it even if it wasn't free. (Btw please make a tweet about who the characters would main if they played Smash 4) Stay Awesome
About time a major tournament like Shine had the balls to step up and implement something like this. Been needed for a while. Good job all! We can only hope this becomes standard at all Melee tournaments.
What’s with all the Doki Doki, I want more smash content, I can’t believe he’s one of us, melee is such a good game and just a small handful of people really care about it. 20XX for life, melee for life.
I don't know if you'll ever see this, I just wanted to let you know: I just found out everything you've done for the Melee/Smash community (UCF, PM, 20XX). And, Doki Doki is one of the most intelligent games ever made. I was flabbergasted to learn you did both of those things so near and dear to my life! I just want to thank you for everything you've done in my life and the lives of countless other people in the world. I know it may just seem like a little bit (LOT) of game development, but it matters. You are a Hero in my book, and I'm so FLIPPING excited to see what project Salvato does next! Again, thank you!
I dont understand why people aren't okay with modifying the game in a way such as the UCF to remove RNG from dashbacking and finding a good controller etc, but all the "Vanilla Elitists" are fine with 20XX TE but not something that genuinely helps everyone, without changing the game.
Shield Drop If the shield is angled such that shield roll is no longer possible, AND the control stick is being held against the rim, then spotdodge threshold is decreased from -0.7 to -0.8. In other words, holding the control stick to the side and rolling it downwards will lower the spotdodge threshold, preventing it from interfering with shield drop. The design of this change is to mimic consistent shield drop methods currently possible on ideal controllers. In vanilla Melee, the popular Axe/Sung shield drop method enables players to reliably shield drop by angling the control stick from a sideways position down to the corner (or appropriate notch). The UCF shield drop change allows all controllers to do this without the need for notches or an ideal controller gate. Traditional shield dropping methods that are unreliable or slow in vanilla Melee (eg. angling the control stick straight down) are not changed whatsoever - only the Axe/Sung method is made to be consistent on all controllers. www.20xx.me/ucf.html
Salvato dude seriously doki doki literature club is a tremendous, incredible game I stumbled upon doki doki in steam and I must say that you are one of the few developers that has been able to restore that feeling of emptiness when finishing a game of how incredible it was ... I hope your games are so incredible because I believe with all my heart that if doki doki was a game with drama I would cry, because, just seeing how you handled (and your team obviously, they did a tremendous job) this game, its history, dialogues, horror, everything really, now I do not know if I seem very expert criticizing, because I am not, I only know that feeling of emptiness, only that feeling makes me decide if a game is good or not, if I will play it again or not, if I enjoy it even if I play it millions of times or not, your team does not know if it is big (I think it is not) but you achieved what the big companies almost do not achieve and that is to leave us with a smile and hope for the next game or I do not know if you are going to read this but seriously your game left me with such a bad taste in my mouth when I did not pay for it because it deserves it as Cuphead, and to be honest this was the only way I found to thank you for such an incredible game. If you read it, THANK YOU.
guys i'm not trying to be rude but, one of the reasons people get annoyed at their fans is because they always say something that sticks with them or memes related to the person. Even though he's the creator of ddlc, this is a SSBM video and probably wants a discussion (even though that never seems to happen in the youtube comments) about how controllers should be handled in competitive smash. Now i'm no a person to speak for Dan Salvato or tell you guys what to comment but, for people like TJ henry yoshi the sheer around of jokes CONSTANTLY being posted about 0.5 A presses or a scuttle bug jamboree mad him lose the majority of his respect for his fans. and I don't want to see that here
Took the words right out of my head. He's now disproportionately known for DDLC. People didn't know he's the creator of 20XX, which is super innovative and helpful to competitive Melee players. No one's going to talk about it though, because "OMG ITS THE DDLC GUY!!!!" and, because of this, he might form a love-hate relationship with DDLC because his other works and projects like 20XX and other coding things won't get proper recognition. They'll get overshadowed by DDLC, which sucks.
I wasn't even aware that Dan created a whole game by himself until I read through this vid's comments hella recently. Everyone should know Dan as the man that improved upon the best competitive fighting game of all time, *Super Smash Bros. Melee*
+ѕнσσк98 yeah, I was super surprised when I saw dan salvato in the credits for 90% of ddlc because I recognized him him from all his mario maker levels
Yeah but Dan is just cool all around. He does loads of cool stuff. Everyone loves him. I'd love to be popular on the internet. I can't say the same for Dan, but I haven't seen him complaining, and, until I do, I'm okay with this. Just M -onika- ind your own business tbh
I'm a little confused by your grammar, but yeah, you can come to UCF if Full sail doesn't work out. It depends on your major. Are you doing music production or audio engineering?
Phishticks I think you missed my point. You've been going through this video telling every person who mentions DDLC to die, which is dumb, but here you tried to look at a visual novel from a competitive standpoint and called it easy to play as a way to be condescending I guess? It's a visual novel. You don't really play visual novels, they're just stories. Calling them "easy to play" is irrelevant. Many DDLC fans come from completely different backgrounds and could easily be invested in a game with more depth than Melee, like LoL or DOTA.
Hey! Uh. Just chill out you two! I just thought it was an informative video, was all. I didn't even mention DDLC... No real reason to get worked up like this!
You can actually see the difference in how much time he spent on this compared to every one of his other videos (with a few exceptions). Sweet my dude. I hope to see Dan Salvato on Guest Grumps in the future.
Hey I just wanted to reach out to you to thank you. Doki Doki Literature Club helped me find my brother. I know it sounds really weird, but I'm so grateful. Thank you for the mods too! You saved Sayori much more than you know!
BTW, I don't know if using your game to try to find him caused any trouble for you. I'm really sorry if it did. Still, I really want to thank you. Words can't express how grateful I am!
A silly idea I had: you know how players can take control of 20xx replays? What if, should this result in a different outcome than that of the actual match, you made it so that a phrase like "time paradox" appeared somewhere in the post-match sequence (such as replacing "Game!", or being inserted into the results screen)?
The dash back is a no brainer, but I'm still concerned about the shield drop fix. I look forward to hearing more about how exactly you guys are changing it to make all controllers have shield drop notches without making shield drops overall too easy.
After watching this, I only confused in one thing. Can you only implement this mod in Dolphin? Or can I implement this in the 20XX training pack?(Nintendont)
ok so unrelated to the vid here. thought it was funny when I saw you pop up in that doki doki lit club game. I only realized it was you after that reference to super smash bros at the end with monika. Love everything you're doing man keep it up
seanplaysmusic let's say you are on FD and your character faces left. A regular dash would now be performed if you quickly hold left on your control stick. A backdash is when you wanna dash to the opposite side you are facing out of the standing animation, so in this case to backdash you would quickly tap right on your control stick. Edit: if the bashdack fails your character turns around slowly, exposing you to lag
You just said that it doesn't affect/change Vanilla Melee, but then you told us that your mods affect the Axe/Sung methods of shield dropping? I don't get it.
1:44 "The focus of UCF is to turn any controller into a 'good' controller without going beyond what is normally possible in vanilla Melee." To me, that sounds like they are changing the game. If it doesn't go beyond, then are the have no qualms about limiting the game in some way, ie affecting Axe/Sung method of shield dropping. I only bring this up because people might have already implemented this command to muscle memory and how would have to change it in the case that this "mod" becomes the norm. They are trying to improve upon a "consistency" issue in the game by changing something in the game, which I still have some issue with because it is the natural hurdles of a game you are trying to master. It's as if other eSports require all mice and keyboards to be standardized. I do see the flexibility with the argument as we deal with analog controls, but still my opinion stands. And I don't recall them ever actually telling us what they changed to make shield dropping easier. Only told us the 1 to 2 frame window for dashback.
I can see what you're saying is implied, but I didn't get that from initial viewings of this. So I can concede that point to you. But I also don't see how this is any different from H@X$'s "Arduino" mods.
It doesn't change the methods of the shield dropping. In vanilla melee, even if you input a correct shield drop, there is a chance it won't go through. This just makes shield drop methods that would normally have a chance of failing, work 100% every time.
And today we have Doki Doki. Thanks Dan for giving us a masterpiece and Monika! Hehehe. She told me about "Super sma-" and i understood what she was talking about. Can't believe that you're a competitive SSB player! My heart couldn't be happier.
All these people in the comments talking about doki doki are making me want to die. THIS IS A MELEE VIDEO AND NONE OF YOU CARE ABOUT MELEE AND IT MAKES ME WANT TO DIE
What about normalizing b-reversing? Afaik b-reversing is different for every controller because of differences in dead zone windows for the control stick.
DeliciousOctorok It might be in technicality, but it's such an easy thing to adjust to no one complains. For example, flicking the stick gives a 100% B-reverse rate, granted snapback doesn't interfere, but that's also humanly preventable.
now if we can only add a little dongle between the controller and the game system to help calibrate things the way we like it and avoid other controller issues.
Still having trouble shield dropping even with UCF on a clean controller with no notches, any tips? Or is this possibly a bug? I can shield drop just fine on my other controller, but this one just gives me spot dodges. I'm still also not having consistent dash backs and I know I have the right build because it says 2D in the top left corner. What is the RAW file for?
Unfortunately, even UCF has its limits, and about 5% (1/20) of controllers will still have trouble with shield drops. There's a good chance one of your two gate corners will shield drop consistently (if lower left corner is giving you spotdodge, try the lower right corner). As for dashback, simply pushing the stick fast enough will give you a consistent dashback every time - you have to push it faster than you do for a forward dash, even with UCF.
We need a fix that fixes the controller directly without changing in game codes. I don't how it would be possible but if there was a way to calibrate a controller's motherboard to have stick inputs at 0.00 wherever the stick is set when calibrating would be great. From what I know some controllers don't have that perfect 0.00 neutral state on their sticks which affect their game play and doing this would eliminate the issue. Modifying melee code seems really gross for tournament play.
the problem with that is that if people don't have modded controllers it makes the gap even worse, because you have the theoretical "best" controllers up against what is possibly the comparatively worse normal controllers. Memory card changes are much easier to spread because they can be copied and therefore standardized, and implementing this kinda stuff is the literally the TO's job. Modifying melee code is much easier than modifying every single individual controller. Seriously, all you really need is 1 modded memory card and you can copy the data from system to system, VS individually modding every controller. what you're basically suggesting is an Arduino, and that shit was kind of a bad idea once Hax thought about it. The memory cards are also a problem, like differences from modded to unmodded play, but there's also the chance you could break your modded controller and not be able to get one modded in time for tournament and be forced to play unmodded, so the possibility is not unique.
Anyone know how to add this code to an iso? I'm looking at the site linked in the description and it says to use ASM Injection. I'm looking up ASM Injection but I can't find anything on it.
Yo real talk, I'd love to have these as a TO in my Local area In Texas. On another note. Do you guys a place where I could send a donation? You do Gods work and I don't see you guys getting much support
get 5 non-smash players to join the scene and monika will become real, from there she can assist you with TAS muscle memory so that you can beat any fox.
This stuff is really great for high level players who want consistency, but a lot if them already have controllers they like. I think stuff like this might look really daunting to entry level players as they do not just need either a wii/gamecube, melee disc, controller and a normal tv or preferably a crt or alternatively a gamecube adapter, a good internet connection and a computer good enough for netplay to even start learning how to play the game, they would also have to buy a memory card from an outside source or mod their wii which is another problem if they only have a gamecube. I feel that using a mod as a standard for tournaments could potentially hinder the growth of the game. That's just one of many outcomes, but Melee has been growing a lot over the past few years without controller mods so I don't see why you would need to take a risk like that. It's never going to be relevant across all tournaments anyway so it might just throw people used to the quirks of their controller off.
Yeah I get that but my point is that low level players just want to play, they don't care about dashbacks and stuff as they hardly know what that means. I guess my opinion is pretty unpopular tho :)
Eh idk. People who come in to the game come in to the Competitive Scene. So they're interested in being good and they already know melee is technical. They'll be happy to learn a mod can make their controller good I think. And if they don't care about tech, then they don't need the mod. lol
wizdoodle There isn't much incentive to start playing melee this far through it's life without serious devotion to it in the first place. For people in their first few months of competitive melee, it's like saying "Thanks for increasing the victory pool". If they are willing to play after getting destroyed then they will get better, even if it means they need to build a decent pc to run dolphin or mod a wii.
Hey Dan! How's it going? Just thought you may enjoy this, I do audio description for video games, so I bring games to people who can't play them due to visual impairments and the like. Anyway, I'm about to post the conclusion of your game tomorrow and it's been a lot of fun. Thank you so much.
is this only for the specific game? or controllers overall? because these would help a ton in other smash games as well. Including The brand new Smash Ultimate which is probably the closest game in tthe series to melee, mechanic wise(in my opinion)
I still want to allow another controller options, no game should be tied to a controller, we can fix the GCC, but that doesn't completely fixes the problem.
we need more dan salvatos in this world. thanks for actually taking it one step at a time instead of completely overshooting the goal. this has to become tournament legal.
Kaze Emanuar exactly

I still think dash from crouch should be considered but what do I know I'm just a falcon main.

skippyasqueeze nah, it's pretty easy in vanilla melee and v consistent

His comment was made before Dan Salvato made his v. 2d update to include UCF. Called that shit. 8)
Good stuff. I wonder how the pickiest players will react?
Lmao. Yeah people are gonna find a way to complain about this somehow.
they already have found a way. Because it's messing with the games code, we're somehow straying furhter from vanilla melee.
About that

Awesome work! I always thought about differ controllers playing differently in Dolphin. Cant wait to see more work done with Memory Cards!
So far, I like how well UCF has gone over. Still though, certain features, like 1.00 dash consistency would be much appreciated.
The only thing this makes "easier" is the endless search players can have for the perfect controller. Really good stuff.
Just gotta say. You are awesome dude, thank you for existing on this planet!
Oh I know I said I'd stop talking but I forgot to say congrats on creating such a good game! you really deserved all the recognition you got!

I'm just here to say that ddlc is awesome! We need more game like that! It deserves an award
Thank you for making it!!
For someone who goes to the University of Central Florida, this was really surreal for me.
Erick Campos off topic; how is that, I'm enrolled in full sail but ucf is also nearby option if full sail isn't for me
I'm a little confused by your grammar, but yeah, you can come to UCF if Full sail doesn't work out. It depends on your major. Are you doing music production or audio engineering?
Dude, you’re a genius.
I don't know the first thing about Melee and it's mods.
But man this is really insightful stuff, and I'm interested in learning more.
Good to see new people getting interested in the community. Its gonna be harder to understand everything than your already easy to play doki doki
Phishticks yes because visual novels are very comparable to melee.
Dandyman that's the point of me commenting it lmao
Phishticks
I think you missed my point.
I'm obsessed with your Doki doki literature club game. Thank you for the masterpiece!
You can actually see the difference in how much time he spent on this compared to every one of his other videos (with a few exceptions). Sweet my dude.
I hope to see Dan Salvato on Guest Grumps in the future.
You are a genius sir, Doki Doki Literature Club is a true work of art. Thank you sincerely, your game means a lot to me. Thank you
I get to meet my brother very soon. He's all grown up now I can't believe it!
Hi dan i wanted to ask you did ddlc got inspired by,,don't judge a BOOK by it's cover"?
If you include it in 20XXTE, are you going to include a toggle for it?
A silly idea I had: you know how players can take control of 20xx replays? What if, should this result in a different outcome than that of the actual match, you made it so that a phrase like "time paradox" appeared somewhere in the post-match sequence (such as replacing "Game!", or being inserted into the results screen)?
Is there any visual indicator in-game that UCF is being used?
Can you provide or link a detailed explanation on why this change doesn't affect how Nana functions and the desyncs related to dash/dashbacks?
How about them mid upward/downward angles on ftilts and Samus fsmash tho.
I subscribed. Thank u for making the masterpiece of ddlc. What an original and intelligent game. Just wait. Ur gonna blow up :)
Hey dan, i hope you’re reading this cus i’m wondering if your team will make other games as doki doki ?
You guys found this channel just because of DDLC but I found this channel from his Yoshi's Story speedruns.
I had no idea you made Doki Doki Literature Club until I got the secret ending with your name. I love 20XX TE too.
How about adding puzzles on this channel too?
The dash back is a no brainer, but I'm still concerned about the shield drop fix. I look forward to hearing more about how exactly you guys are changing it to make all controllers have shield drop notches without making shield drops overall too easy.
Codes are no longer available on the upload site, cant find it anywhere else either. I would like to have ucf on my wii pls
Any chance to see this on pal as well ?
probably not
After watching this, I only confused in one thing. Can you only implement this mod in Dolphin? Or can I implement this in the 20XX training pack?(Nintendont)
FoUrSide as of now dolphin only and then soon to come are memory cards and homebrew
You can easily turn the UCF codeset into DOL mod using Melee Code Manager. In fact I've been testing our codes partially that way.
Now, it's everywhere.
The text file, do I just copy the 8 digit string? Or?
will ucf fix controller problems with third party controllers?
ok so unrelated to the vid here. thought it was funny when I saw you pop up in that doki doki lit club game. I only realized it was you after that reference to super smash bros at the end with monika. Love everything you're doing man keep it up
is there a way to put the code into a memcard or do we have to wait till 20xxte is released?
Congrats on 10,000 subs
This is a pretty stupid question, but the memory card you buy off the website is the most recent one right (version 2.d)?
I still don't understand what dash back is but I want it fixed.
seanplaysmusic let's say you are on FD and your character faces left.
Chris Cha It isn't. It' just cheaper and more efficient to use UCF instead of Arduino.
It doesn't change the methods of the shield dropping. In vanilla melee, even if you input a correct shield drop, there is a chance it won't go through. This just makes shield drop methods that would normally have a chance of failing, work 100% every time.
Ok... But how?
is there a version of 20XX with this i can use now?
This is mostly unrelated but is you play with keyboard you are limmeted in what you can do but you can dashback evrey time (sorry for spelling)
And today we have Doki Doki. Thanks Dan for giving us a masterpiece and Monika! Hehehe. She told me about "Super sma-" and i understood what she was talking about. Can't believe that you're a competitive SSB player! My heart couldn't be happier.
Will this mod have 20xx te on it or a way to use both
So are you telling me that controller Johns won't exist anymore???
LETS FUCKING GO JOEYYYYYYYYYY
Where can i get UCF for PAL?
Thank you for doing what you did. This sounds like a reasonable and legitimate solution for all tournaments.
How do you prevent snapback from interfering? I'm always running into issues with that whenever I try to b-reverse with my controller.
DeliciousOctorok move the stick back to neutral manually rather than flicking. It's a spring so flicking will never be reliable.
Hmm ok I never actually tried that. Thanks!
amazing, what i was kinda hoping a controller fix would be like. i think itll be interesting to see how its implemented wide scale though
Hmm, I wanna get this for Smash Ladder Dolphin, but I wanna know how to install. Is there a reliable video on how to do this?
now if we can only add a little dongle between the controller and the game system to help calibrate things the way we like it and avoid other controller issues.
As for dashback, simply pushing the stick fast enough will give you a consistent dashback every time - you have to push it faster than you do for a forward dash, even with UCF.
the difference is night and day brah thankyou massive legend
Too bad Blur, Juggleguy, and Dr.Z are probably not going to allow this FeelsBadMan
HOW A BOUT THE FLICK BACK ISSUES WITH STICK BOXES??
They're looking into it.
This will only take off if 20xxTE takes off. I don't think it was that long ago that I heard it's still crashing/a bit unstable?
I've never had 20xxTE crash in tournament mode.
Wait, this is the same Dan Salvato that salvago'd my wallato?
Anyone know how to add this code to an iso? I'm looking at the site linked in the description and it says to use ASM Injection. I'm looking up ASM Injection but I can't find anything on it.
@Woli ??? That link didn't help.
+Woli hahahhahahhah
I didn't know a game dev could be so wholsome
I FUCKIN LOVE DOKI DOKI LITERATURE CLUB WELL DONE MATE
Yo real talk, I'd love to have these as a TO in my Local area In Texas. On another note. Do you guys a place where I could send a donation? You do Gods work and I don't see you guys getting much support
Okay but how can I add Monika to my controller? 🤔
get 5 non-smash players to join the scene and monika will become real, from there she can assist you with TAS muscle memory so that you can beat any fox.
Is this on 4.07?
It's never going to be relevant across all tournaments anyway so it might just throw people used to the quirks of their controller off.
but on the same token it helps the growth of the game bcuz downloading a mod is easier than finding a good controller...
and finding a good controller will only get harder in the future..
And if they don't care about tech, then they don't need the mod. lol
wizdoodle
There isn't much incentive to start playing melee this far through it's life without serious devotion to it in the first place.
It would be awesome for the 20xx training pack had this
is this only for the specific game? or controllers overall? because these would help a ton in other smash games as well. Including The brand new Smash Ultimate which is probably the closest game in tthe series to melee, mechanic wise(in my opinion)
so why does n0ne not like UCF?
TheCaptainKlutch hes mostly memeing about how it causes phantoms
is there ucf for ultimate?
Sadly no

Where is the DDLC video?
He is a the real Dan Salvato... He's a developer for the UCF mod for competitive Super Smash Brother's Melee. He doesn't just make DDLC...
it was a joke
Does this work with netplay?
Delirium if both you and your opponent both have the same codes yes
I still want to allow another controller options, no game should be tied to a controller, we can fix the GCC, but that doesn't completely fixes the problem.
