For all you PM players out there, just so you know if you’re in a lower port, Snake’s claymore effects you differently. If you grab someone of a higher port and walk into a claymore, they will receive the knock back from the explosion, but you won’t. For any snake mains out there, make sure to always go for port 4, as it might save you from specific explosion knockbacks
Everybody is gonna take the bait... This dude just found a brilliant way to convince people to let him get the first port. He's either preparing for 20XX or he's sick of his little brother whining about being player 2. In any case, Genius.
Oh and Brawl is with the extreme floatyness, Meta Knight's and Pit's recovery, over-nerfed Jigglypuff, *and don't forget the knockback for all of Mr Game and Watch's moves,* Lucas' bullshittery of an up-smash, AND OH GOD DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON HOW BUFFED EVERYONE'S RECOVERY WAS. P.s. Port priority is in every smash bros, but it is more prominent in melee
You should've mention the Game & Watch port priority issue! At least for the mario bros, their down throws won't work against G&W if they don't have port priority. Classic G&W cheese
Not true, just tested. All 3 plumbers can dthrow g&w no matter the port priority. Bowser can't but that doesn't seem to have anything to do with controller ports
Hreesto if you downthrow game and watch with the Mario bros, depending on port priority g&w will with pop up like normal or stick to the ground. It's very weird
Wyatt Smeaton basically Mario bros, yoshi, and samus when they down thrown G&W he gets put in knockdown when he has port priority and when the other character has port priority, GW gets sent the normal trajectory
Ok but in PM the snake matchup completely changes depending on if snake is a lower port or not For those unfamiliar with PM snake, he has a motion sensor bomb like thing that he can place with down smash, and pull a grenade with neutral B. These are important because if one character is grabbing the other and an explosion happens, then the person with the higher port is the only one that gets hurt. So if snake pulls a grenade and then holds shield, then if he's a lower port, he can grab the other person, but if not, he has to be content with holding shield, as if he grabs he will be the one to get hit. Same thing with his down smash, if he walks into it while holding someone (snake can walk while grabbing someone with the dpad) then the person with the higher port gets hit. This is one reason why people don't really like snake, as well as being one of the only match ups people actually RPS for ports. Some match ups are so affected that snake can win or lose the MU based on port.
Hey melee players, in particular, pikachu mains. Having a lower port increases the % window for pikachu' s u throw usmash on sheik and also decreases the sheik chaingrab on pika to 28% with perfect di behind and up
Am I the only one who didn't understand the difference in the Marth up-throw comparison clip? Like they both end up on frame 41 and the change in Marth direction doesn't really help with illustrating the difference/frame advantage... I would've preferred two clips presented at the same time with both Marth's shielding after the throw to see the one with lower port priority have his shield come out first.
little-vince It is only one frame so it is hard to see the difference, but its much easier to feel the difference when you are chain grabbing fox because you will light shield if you're a frame too early.
The example is poop, and legit been edited to fit their wrong explanation, maybe not purposely though. Marth won't feel a difference, as it does not affect his timings at all, what happens is if the victim is closer to port 4, they will skip the first frame of hitstun.
I doubt it. Nintendo would look at it as taking a step backwards from Brawl and Smash 4. And even if they did Melee Elitists would still call the original better.
i'm so confused right now. Literally Kira at the end of the video says lower port is better because moving faster out of throws is so important. So why is it that in real life everybody always takes port 1. And everybody in the comments is talking about port 1 priority and getting first port. Doesn't the throw followups outweigh everything else kira mentioned ?? OR people really jsut want to be able to grab first ....
It’s sorta recently discovered information and might not be that widespread yet. Traditional knowledge said port 1 was ideal because we only knew about the simultaneous (ledge)grab advantages.
THIS VIDEO IS MISLEADING. You DO NOT skip the last frame of throws if you have the lowest port. You instead, skip the first frame of animation/hitstun when you ARE thrown, if you are in the lowest port. This means that the thrower does not act 1 frame sooner, and the throwee actually just spends one more frame in hitstun. This is an important distinction because it means that you do not have to change your followup timings out of throws depending on port.
Also, the higher port will be pushed to the left if the ECBs are on top of each other, which is kind of good to know if you're tech rolling to the ledge while someone is there. If you're higher port and you're rolling to the left ledge, you may get pushed off if someone is standing on the very edge and shielding. same if you're lower port, and you're rolling to the left ledge. obviously this is very situational, buuuut you could be the one standing at the ledge and shielding, knowing that if they tech roll towards you, they will fall off, unable to shield. DUMPSTER THEM
I think this still works with slippi cause fell though the platform at the start once and thought huh you can fall through the platform at the start I didn't know that, and I use to always use port 2 cause I accidently put it in the wrong one
SIMIFU Yeah. For creators who didn't intend for this game to be played so competitively, they made it very complicated. There is no way all of these melee techniques could be mistakes. Honestly, Nintendo showed just embrace the competitive aspect of melee so their new smash game wouldnt immediately lose viewers to melee.
It really doesn't make *that* big of a difference, competitively. I'm sure lots of Smash players are willing to claim they make use of a single frame advantage, but if they ever do it's definitely an accident. There is no way someone can consistently make full use of every single frame.
It doesn't help you if you dont know about it or if you dont know how to use it, but there are ways to take advantage of technique. As long as there are people playing this game there will be people who try to become as good as humanly possible using every single technique to their advantage
A higher port is not always desirable if you play someone like Luigi or ICs. If you're P3 or P4, you can waveland right when the match starts. So does that outweigh the cons of a lower port? That's up to you.
"In case Melee HD ever makes the game better." I dunno, wouldn't be a really high task. If Melee HD did happen, they'd probably at least fix Mr. Game & Watch (who feels incomplete with his shield being the way it is and his un L-Cancelable Aerials.) And possibly certain other bugs like wobbling and possibly other hitbox fixes.
Your explanation of the throw effect is wrong. Marth will not feel any changes in his timing. If the victim is closer to port 4, then he skips the first frame of hitstun, which makes them able to act 1 frame earlier. Source: smashboards.com/threads/how-port-priority-affects-throws.393128/ Not sure how you managed to edit that example without realising this :/
Also depending on which character you are against and the stage you are on, if Luigi is lower port, then he will start the match with his down b charged (Example, vs Marth on Dreamland Luigi starts with it charged) making Luigi even more jank
Whatever the correct term is, idk. You're probably right, higher port number (4 the highest, 1 the lowest) for Luigi means he has a chance of starting with his down b charged, it just also depends on the character and stage, so quite a few of factors are involved
Hopefully one day these "issues" will be neutralized in the 20XXHP and TE. Most likely nothing can be done about the priority part of port priority, but there is probably a more ideal timing and location combination for spawn and respawn that better reflects how a competitive game should behave.
Never ever. Melee elitists are retarded. No amount of shy guys, port priority and falling through pokemon stadium will ever indicate to them that melee is in fact really broken for competitive play.
So... most of that seems to not be very impactful except for the throws thing. Anybody care to go all ucf on it and just fix that issue so all ports have the same frame data for throws?
"Makes the game better" Competitive or casual wise? Because showing an image of Sakurai depicts an employee working for a company, a company like any other, wishes to profit. So think about that, when keeping remarking Melee HDeezNutz.
Another case where port priority matters that you didn't cover is in Kadano's Hitbox video. (footnote at 7:45) th-cam.com/video/MOlQv-9S1zE/w-d-xo.html#t=7m45s
It's over! I have the high port
YOU UNDERESTIMATE MY POWER
Don't meteor smash...
YOU UNDERSTIMATE MY *FOX*

I HATE YOU!!!!!

was going to mention snake. Thank you.
Superior Dusknoir delete this
obitl uchi why?
Is there a forum that goes more in depth about Port priority for pm? Thank you for this tidbit of info by the way.
For anyone interested I may make a video explaining this in depth
Everybody is gonna take the bait... This dude just found a brilliant way to convince people to let him get the first port. He's either preparing for 20XX or he's sick of his little brother whining about being player 2. In any case, Genius.
Is the last one a lie?
Melee is fair and balanced, Melee is fair and balanced, Melee is fair and balanced.
i don’t think anyone is saying that nowadays
Oh and Brawl is with the extreme floatyness, Meta Knight's and Pit's recovery, over-nerfed Jigglypuff, *and don't forget the knockback for all of Mr Game and Watch's moves,* Lucas' bullshittery of an up-smash, AND OH GOD DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON HOW BUFFED EVERYONE'S RECOVERY WAS.
P.s. Port priority is in every smash bros, but it is more prominent in melee
Sm4sh has little lags due to the GC adaptator and new screens.
There's not a single smash game that's fair and balanced
Shine, Shine, Shine.
Favorite quote from my friend: "It's only a john until it affects you"
You should've mention the Game & Watch port priority issue! At least for the mario bros, their down throws won't work against G&W if they don't have port priority. Classic G&W cheese

Hreesto if you downthrow game and watch with the Mario bros, depending on port priority g&w will with pop up like normal or stick to the ground. It's very weird
DP3mo24hofosho tried with port 1 plumber port 2 g&w and reverse. That didn't work. Other than that idk
Wyatt Smeaton basically Mario bros, yoshi, and samus when they down thrown G&W he gets put in knockdown when he has port priority and when the other character has port priority, GW gets sent the normal trajectory

was going to mention snake. You da man.
MehGamer I Tried to be as detailed as possible for people who don't play PM, and people unfamiliar with the snake match up. Hope I did well!
So, if you’re the closer port, you get hurt, and if you’re the farthest port, it hardly works/you take less damage.
...like a real grenade?
Its so funny how I dont even play the game that much but I love the dedication and find your channel very entertaining.
I just always go port 4 because I like the green :P
Same
👍
Port 3 for me
me too
Hey melee players, in particular, pikachu mains. Having a lower port increases the % window for pikachu' s u throw usmash on sheik and also decreases the sheik chaingrab on pika to 28% with perfect di behind and up
Thanks, because I actually happen to be a pikachu main
Oh wait I just noticed it’s Kira. Oh shit
brian adams you already know
Killer Queen has already touched that port
Diego Hernandez-Trujillo Deadly Queen*
SHINING
JUSTICE
Hylian Knight
Bruh
Stupid localizations dude
It's Killer Queen
The quality of your videos is great man
I'm glad a video on this issue exists because I thought I noticed some timing discrepancies when using a wavebird with multiple receivers.
This is an insane level of observating minutiae. The Melee community is filled with mathematical mad geniuses!
Am I the only one who didn't understand the difference in the Marth up-throw comparison clip? I was wondering about that grab thing. Thanks for the clarification.
Do people really think that there's going to be a Melee HD?
there has to be
Apparently
Guy Lloyd It would be awesome, but it's not going to happen.
I doubt it. Nintendo would look at it as taking a step backwards from Brawl and Smash 4.
And even if they did Melee Elitists would still call the original better.
There isn't a need to change the game anymore.
Kira, are you ever gonna finish your tier list?
I really loved all the parts and I want to see the last part before it becomes a lost project :'c
So when are you going to finish your official tier list??....
i'm so confused right now.
Justin Wong lower number
no he said lower port meaning lower port priority so it would mean port 4 should be the best for getting the 1 frame advantage on grab.
It’s sorta recently discovered information and might not be that widespread yet. Traditional knowledge said port 1 was ideal because we only knew about the simultaneous (ledge)grab advantages.
Actually, Mew2King always picks port 4 and cites this exact reason due to how chain grab heavy his Marth is
Justin Wong you're not jwong
THIS VIDEO IS MISLEADING. You DO NOT skip the last frame of throws if you have the lowest port. Man this game is more bullshit then I had originally believed. But its a good thing I'm more of a spectator because I love to watch it.
SIMIFU Yeah. For creators who didn't intend for this game to be played so competitively, they made it very complicated. There is no way all of these melee techniques could be mistakes. SIMIFU I'd never heard of this until this video, and the chance that it'll have a game changing effect is miniscule.
SIMIFU I just play for fun... using tournament rules heheh
It doesn't help you if you dont know about it or if you dont know how to use it, but there are ways to take advantage of technique. As long as there are people playing this game there will be people who try to become as good as humanly possible using every single technique to their advantage
Hey Kira can you continue your tier lists videos, you know the low tiers
so whens that tier list coming out?
Got so happy when I heard Kira
A higher port is not always desirable if you play someone like Luigi or ICs. If you're P3 or P4, you can waveland right when the match starts. So does that outweigh the cons of a lower port? That's up to you.

I'm imagining Melee monks playing Rock, Paper, Scissors for port priority.
Port 2 also allows you to drop through the platform at the start
This video is gunna cause so many johns.
So you gonna finish the tier list now??
You should make a video of how to use Jab and how to follow up if you land a jab/jab reset
Kira is back :D
Very imPORTant and informative. Thank you.
Kira's back PogChamp
This video coming real handy when 20XX finally arrives.
0:44 How and why is this a thing?
"There are 3 main things about port priority"
*Names 4*
Hey, when will you release your Bottoms Tiers video on your tier list?
I’m thankful for P1 port priority
Goes m.i.a
Port priority
Happy thanksgiving
It´s almost painfull to see this
THE JOHNS ARE COMING
this is a great topic actually
whens the last episode of the tier list series?
Wow definitely snagging port 4 in tourney sets now. Need everything I can to not get chain grabbed lol
Your explanation of the throw effect is wrong. Marth will not feel any changes in his timing. If the victim is closer to port 4, then he skips the first frame of hitstun, which makes them able to act 1 frame earlier. Source: smashboards.com/threads/how-port-priority-affects-throws.393128/
Not sure how you managed to edit that example without realising this :/
mycrunchyfetus I give an A+
0:15 CDK??
Kira is back!
I can't believe I didn't know about this! How do they decide which port to use at a tournament?
ppffffft. no wonder, ya know now that i think of it, ive only ever lost a match when someone else had port 1
Also depending on which character you are against and the stage you are on, if Luigi is lower port, then he will start the match with his down b charged (Example, vs Marth on Dreamland Luigi starts with it charged) making Luigi even more jank
Wait, no matter the stage and match up?
I thought it was the higher port (in NTSC)?
Whatever the correct term is, idk. You're probably right, higher port number (4 the highest, 1 the lowest) for Luigi means he has a chance of starting with his down b charged, it just also depends on the character and stage, so quite a few of factors are involved
In PAL it's always the lower part and only depending on stage (on Fountain of Dreams and Pokemon Stadium and some non-tournament-legal stages) btw ^^
“What’s up guys”
Kira...are you....here....
Kira is backkkk
im surprised you didnt mention the G&W/Doc port priority thing
It would of been cool if you got aMSa to narrate this video, since he does a lot of experimenting with the port priority stuff.
I dont even mess with melee like that but this still interesting
0:20 Lol I'm going to disagree that a 1 frame will matter in most matches.
I thought Kira quit smash? Or is he back now?
Interesting video, now I wonder if this affects the wii too? For playing ssbm on the Wii.
I blame litteraly everything on port priority
How do you have a video on everything
And thus the rock paper scissor metagame was push beyond our imagination
I just go port 4 because green is my favorite color
I always use ports 1 and 2 no matter what, only because it makes ledge canceling at the beginning of a match easier with Falco. lol
KIRA!!!
"What's up guys? You already know who it is!"
uhh BITCH THE FUCK I DO
So...in a tournament how do you decide on the ports?
do a video on CRT vs LSD
Hopefully one day these "issues" will be neutralized in the 20XXHP and TE. Most likely nothing can be done about the priority part of port priority, but there is probably a more ideal timing and location combination for spawn and respawn that better reflects how a competitive game should behave.
Never ever. Melee elitists are retarded. No amount of shy guys, port priority and falling through pokemon stadium will ever indicate to them that melee is in fact really broken for competitive play.
Splozy If thats the case then stfu and let us play what we want
Does this works with netplay?
I fucking missed you kira
man ask me next time to Photoshop that picture of sakurai, I see those stray pixels everywhere 👁️
kira in an ssbm tutorials video? what year is this?
Disappointed you didn't elaborate on character specific changes like luigi's chance of spawning with a charged rising cyclone.
Does this work on the wii? Cuz i dont own a GC
Yes. No durr. The game doesn't automatically patch itself when it changes consoles.
So... most of that seems to not be very impactful except for the throws thing. Anybody care to go all ucf on it and just fix that issue so all ports have the same frame data for throws?
I've heard that port priority also breaks total ties (hitting the blast line on the same frame during sudden death). Is this true?
Yes
...Do specific console firmware do this or is this pretty much every where ?
Thank you.
Wow. Why the hell would they design a port priority into the game? Or maybe it’s a glitch? Does this port priority apply when playing on the Wii?
Plz just finish your tier list
Dang just when I started to give melee credit.
Would this count on adventure or classic mode as well?
Yay kira
Do not forget that the person with the higher port always wins if you both die at the same time during sudden death. Impossibu.
"Makes the game better"
Competitive or casual wise? Because showing an image of Sakurai depicts an employee working for a company, a company like any other, wishes to profit.
So think about that, when keeping remarking Melee HDeezNutz.
you forgot about luigis port charged cyclone
Kira, my man. My dude. Ya gotta get a pop filter. Keep up the good work though!
Shouldn’t you technically do some form of coin flip before each game?
i know this port priority became a big issue in brawl in teams and snake dittos. its pretty dumb
My brother knew all along!
Another case where port priority matters that you didn't cover is in Kadano's Hitbox video.
(footnote at 7:45)

Whats up with local tournaments and emulators
We need UPF tbh
Thanx for that.
I knew it !! Thats why I lost that match the other day!
Is that Kira?!?!😦😆
