  • Hey guys, hope everyone is doing ok. In this video we go over the basics of Roundabouts. We'll talk about lane discipline, how to navigate them and how to correctly use your indicators and observations. Below you will find a link to the highway code. Number 185 gives a good illustration on basic roundabout lane discipline.

    Glad everyone has been finding the mod 2 videos helpful and I thank everyone for the feedback. I am aware there were occasions I was over the speed limit, we all have bad habits when we first start riding. I will always take constructive criticism onboard but I will NOT tolerate silly or abusive comments on the matter. Ride safe. 🤜🤛

    Passed my Mod 2 about 8 months ago. My instructor told me if you are in the wrong lane it’s ok. Just carry on with all your necessary checks etc and go the way the lane dictates. You won’t fail for going the wrong direction from what the examiner tells you. It’s all about how you ride and is it proper not your navigation skills :)

    I'm a Scot, living in Oz for last 20+ years... I'm amazed how many drivers in both countries still don't understand roundabouts! I'm always super cautious as a result! Just getting back onto a bike after 20 years and these videos are a wonderful refresher for me to remember how to keep myself safe. I learned to ride around Inverness with two other guys and my instructor for the week was brilliant! I learned so much in such a short time. Yeah there is a lot to take in on CBT day so don't worry about silly mistakes, everyone does it. The best thing to do is to realise what mistake you made, how you would fix it next time then move on. Superb video many thanks! I have my Mods coming up in August and your videos are proving invaluable 👍
    However, on my CBT, we were taught to take Lane position one when taking the first or second exit on a roundabout (Assuming both before the 12 o clock position)
    This didn't make sense to me as you would lose command of the lane, inviting motorists to attack down your right side 🤷‍♂️ But we did it because we were told to. (CBT done on YBR125)
    So, many thanks for clearing that up mate 😁

    Cheers for the videos - I got through my CBT a few months back, and want to practise on my 125 for a while before I go for the DAS. I've been driving for years, and probably go on autopilot when in the car, but only thing on roundabouts I'm questioning for the bike is multi-lanes on the exit. So for eg, turning right at a roundabout, so in right hand lane, with right indicator on, change indicator as you pass the junction before you are coming off, with a left life saver, but say there are 2 lanes on the exit, does it matter (in terms of test, and marked down) which one you would take?

      @@MotoEcosse That's interesting. Do you think having 2 modules to the test is better?

    • @MotoEcosse
      @MotoEcosse  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I personally think so. The mod 1 will test every aspect of slow control and slow maneuvers. If you happen to make a mistake on mod 1, whether is locking the back wheel or even dropping the bike, I think it's better that it happens in a controlled area rather out on public roads. It also takes the pressure off of doing everything in the one test.

    • @Mr.M1STER
      @Mr.M1STER 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MotoEcosse That's true. I suppose though by the time someones test comes around they should be well past the dropping the bike stage but fair point all the same because anything can happen especially giving the pressure of a "test" environment. I think both ways have their pros and cons because I personally like the way everything was in the one test so I didn't have two "tests" as such and once I had the one done, I was finished and didn't have to start preparing for another day out. Both systems work well though I would say.

    If you are turning right on a roundabout whereby two lanes turn right, would you still indicate right irrespectively? As I am getting confused on how the 'outter' right hand lane - it would feel, to me, that to indicate right, the persons in the 'innermost' right hand lane may feel that I am cutting them up?

    Can I ask about lane position….when approaching a junction to turn left , in OSMPSL we position ourselves slightly left, why does this not apply with roundabouts? Surely we have the same dangers of people under and over taking us?

    • @MotoEcosse
      @MotoEcosse  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      On roundabouts you're not turning into a junction, so you have to approach it differently, you're basically approaching the roundabout in the appropriate lane, then moving onto the roundabout. You stay in position 2 while doing this to minimise the chances of other road users trying to pass on either side which is a big no no on roundabout lanes.

      I'm not entirely sure what you mean, Logan. If you need to go on an inside lane you would get into the correct lane on approach. If for any reason you had to move lanes, only do so if it's absolutely clear. If it's a mod 2 situation and you feel you're in the wrong lane, don't try and switch lanes, just stay in the lane you're in and take the exit for the lane you're in. It will mean taking the wrong exit but as long as you do it safely there won't be an issue. If it's something else you're stuck with let me know. 🤜🤛

    My instructor keeps saying I have to do a left lifesaver before I signal on a roundabout, even if I'm going straight on, being in the left hand lane of a 2 lane roundabout, I should left shoulder check (not right where there's a gap) before I signal as I go past the left hand turn. This doesn't feel right yet I'm told this is what instructors are looking for on Mod 2. Is this correct ?

    • @MotoEcosse
      @MotoEcosse  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Not sure why your instructor wants you to do a life saver before signalling. Life savers are the last thing you do before moving position or taking exits. The general rule is to always do a life saver where there's a lane next to you. For example, if you're in the left hand lane going straight on, 2nd exit. You would signal after you'd passed the first exit then do a right life saver as there's a lane to your right. There would be no lane to your left, so in theory you wouldn't have to do a left life saver, but some instructors teach differently. I was taught to always do a left life saver, whether it's needed or not. This was also the way I rid on my test and had no issues.

    • @MotoEcosse

      In cases like that I'd probably favour the left lane. It all depends on road signs, road markings and how busy the lanes are.

    After 34 yrs driving I can say that some roundabouts are very poor in design , so are designed to guide you over with the road marking and they are great and even have coloured lanes to assist . There are others also where you are taking the 3rd exit, you use the second lane on approach and then you have to get over immediately or you end up,in the wrong lane .. unfortunately you only know when you’ve used it a few times .. if it wasn’t fir the fact that it has traffic lights or that it is usually congested then I believe far more accidents would occur … I just hope my test roundabouts are simple !
    Ps. After watching this video it’s obvious that the white lines need re painting .. don’t you think the LA should be held responsible and taken to account ? Surely it would add to road safety .. no wonder confusion occurs in such places ..

    • @MotoEcosse
      @MotoEcosse  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah the white lines fading can be frustrating for new drivers/riders. The council in my area have started to repaint certain areas, usually the busy areas but I can guarantee there will be a lot of areas that won't get fixed. That's why I always tell people to as much as possible about road navigation like road signs, markings on roads etc. There will be thousands of roundabouts throughout the country that have poor lane markings so having as much knowledge as possible will make navigating them a bit easier.

    I follow the principles you describe when negotiating a roundabout. That was how I was instructed. Now, I live in Spain where you have to forget all that. The instructor would tell me to either nudge over to the left or right slightly (position 1 or 3) depending on which exit you were taking instead of keeping with position 2 as another biker may come and take up that space next to you, which you don't want! So a bit confusing which one to believe. Taking position 2 sounds like the logical choice just as you would in a car

    • @MotoEcosse
      @MotoEcosse  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was always taught to stay in position 2. For me moving over to a different position can allow another road user to try and take advantage of the gap, not ideal when you're on a bike.
