its pretty easy to get into, once your workshop is setup. my first basic forge cost me about 300€, and most people have some feasible tools already at home (wrenches, hammers)
I had the fair amount of luck of being born into a rural region, with an old german timber framed house. Those tend to be a bit larger than what you would usually have close to a larger city and most of them have small barns, providing basically a great place to start a shop. And nearly every village had a smith at some point, so old but still perfectly working tools are really easy to come by.
I am utterly fascinated by the idea and would love to try it, but realistically I don't believe I have the patience that would be required. (Or the eye for proportions)
You'd be amazed how that evaluation suddenly changes when you take your first glowing bilet out of the forge and start hammering away. Forming steel with ones own hands is an amazing experience. I never had a manual labor job and didn't think I could get anything done in that field. It takes only a couple of short weekends to go from metallurgic abomination to fairly fine knife. The mastery, which takes years and decades, lies within the details... choosing certain alloys, laminating steel, damascene production, carving and all that.
***** Yes but it also take talent to be able to do it aswell you utter spanner, just like saying everyone is talentless, jesus some people are brain dead
1:39 Ilya: Deal with it. Me: *Watches Ilya slap on a pair of just deal with it glasses* OH YEAH! GO GET EM, ILYA!!! COMPLETE WITH JUST DEAL WITH IT GLASSES!!!
make a series where each and every one of you amazing black smiths make your own sword/knife or other melee weapon. The weapon of choice you guys would personally would want in the exact configuration if you had to take it to battle. would be very interresting to see what you guys would pick and come up with, would show us how you people look at mediaval weapons and what you would want in one in terms of features. like if you watchers agree so that they may see this
Especially given they have to produce weapons and armour for their normal clients as well, including likely hundreds of movie props and prop weapons per year, as well as non-commercial clients. There doesn't appear to be 'seasons' for the series, with downtime used to make the weapons pending the season. My guess is that they pick one thing a week to do with the time and resources they have between other clients, get someone else to handle the simplex inventory, and try and build a backlog.
I believe they prepared and recorded a lot during the season break. Also, Illia (I have no idea how to write his name) wasn't really in the last video. He was probably working on this at that time.
Ilya is like a super smith. When I heard that he was going to be on 'Forged in Fire' I remember thinking that if I were going to be on the show and I heard that Ilya was going to be my competition I'd have been thinking, "&@#^ #@& *&^%!!!"
Well in every case we can say:"its way too much and no where near you can afford to pay them, to do build for your self, so dont ask if you can buy these builds or similar build!"
+Hellsong89 wow guys relax. it's just for reference and neat to have a monetary reference. I appreciate the amount of work put in and as one of the poors, it's just interesting to know.
I don't know if anyone of ya ever show these guy some love because all I see in the comment are suggestion for their project. Barely ever see any praise; and i know damn well that the Man at Arm crew work harder for their video any youtuber that I know.
Michealcthulhu does amazing work! And does it by himself with not so state of the art type of tools mind you. Now don't get me wrong here Man at Arm crew do some cool things from now and then but the work they do does not compare what Mich does but that's just me tho. If you don't agree then check out Buster blade that was done by both and you choose who really puts craftsmanship and detail.
totally agree, i just watch ilya in awe, he is so fascinating to watch work and is just mentally talented, and always makes things have such a pure beauty
the game is useless repetitive bullshit that isnt fun. Same as Call of Duty...all it is is Blizzards version of call of Duty....Simple. HoTS is Blizzards version of LoL....WoW is Blizzards version of Everquest. Some games are good...some games are bad. Overwatch is really bad.
They did that already, did they not? Or at least another group did. Look it up. It's devastating against armour. I blow can implode a breastplate fully to the point where another would go right through and seperate the limbs.
+artistafrustrado1 this is a stupid comment just because they have done one genre of swords dosn't mean they have done it too much they have done tons of longswords and the such there are like a million ways to make a katana and nearly all of them have different outcomes
Can we get a “behind the scenes” video at the end of a season? There have got to be some great shots left on the editing floor (throwing the yin/yang chakram, for example) and a recap episode would be a great place to show those off. (Plus, y’know, you guys get to release one extra video with no additional forging or filming.)
Ya know what? I would LOVE to see these guys made a traditional medieval sword (not one from a movie, game or an anime) using only tools available to the people of that time period. No power hammer, no electric forges, no gas propelled forges, just a hole in the ground, hot coals and only their own strength behind a swinging forge hammer, no belt sanders, no grinders and no blow torches! It would be interesting to see the process they had to go through centuries ago to produce swords that we can whip up in a day or two.
The weapons from Robert Jordan’s _The Wheel of Time_ series would make a really nice series of builds, especially if you can make your own interpretations of the designs before the TV series gets started: • Rand al-Thor’s heron-marked sword, _katana_-like, with European hilts. (The crystalline Callandor, the “Sword That Is Not a Sword” would be cool too, but would be completely Lauren’s or Ferenc’s build, leaving nothing for the shop’s metalworkers to do.) • Mat Cauthon’s _ashandarei_, a polearm like a glaive or Japanese _naginata_; also the ruby-hilted dagger of Shadar Logoth. • Perrin Aybara’s warhammer Mah’alleinir, and his half-moon axe.
Could you make the Rivan King’s sword, from David & Leigh Eddings’s _Belgariad_ and _Malloreon_ series of books? I especially want to see Lauren’s or Ferenc’s take on the divine Stone of Aldur, the sword’s pommel.
the reverse blade would be awesome. knowing how a katana is made, I wonder what would be done different to accomplish the reverse curve and bevel and special clay heat treatment without it looking ground and just clay on the wrong edges.
Whenever something is made even barely inspired by east-asiant weaponary or armor, he puts in so much thought and love, it's inspiring as a fellow artist.
I was wondering where his glasses went in the beginning. That was answered pretty quickly xD I love these videos, watching blacksmithing is really interesting.
if they did it alongside something like his secondary blade I think you would actually be quite original, and also a katana. also Illya is a fucking amazing katana smith
Please make one of the swords from Christopher Paolini’s _Inheritance Cycle_: Brisingr or Zar’roc. But make them as described in the books, not the impractical version portrayed in the movie-give Sam & Ilya a chance to make a multi-core sword.
What a beauty. My respect for your craft is extremely high. You guys are very inspiring and make me want to get back into forging and being a blacksmith.
Are any of the transforming weapons from RWBY actually possible? I’ll make this a general request and leave it to you guys to choose the most challenging one you can actually construct.
Please make the swords of the Knights of the Cross from Jim Butcher’s _The Dresden Files_: a European longsword, a katana or _tsurugi_, and a cavalry saber, each with a Roman-style nail worked into the hilt. (If you reach out to the author on Facebook, I’m sure he’d be glad to describe them in as much detail as you need.)
While I love The Dresden Files dearly, these kinds of weapons aren't really that interesting to make on the show. They make prop and other versions of all three of those in their sleep for commercial and non-commercial clients.
Maybe, Fish in a Barrel, but I think it would be cool to see these swords, particularly with the nail included. And hey-if enough people agree and up-vote my request and leave their own requests, the BK&S guys will know there’ll be an audience for that video; otherwise, it’ll be just me and they can safely ignore that.
It'd be nice to see in as much as a fan-fueled recognition of the source material, but in terms of the build, they're commonplace, and largely boring items to create. Unless they switch it up by using some new or interesting techniques, we'd just see the same billet or plasma cut, forged to shape, rough ground, heat treated, some basic accessorising, and done.
+1 to making all 3 swords, each with a nail embedded in them. Use your own creative take on each of them. Next book should come out in 2016 - perfect time!!!
Watching Ilya engrave and forge armor really inspires me to take up black smithing. Maybe one day I'll be a true master like him
its pretty easy to get into, once your workshop is setup. my first basic forge cost me about 300€, and most people have some feasible tools already at home (wrenches, hammers)
I know right!? I am a welder/ironworker by trade, but here in the Vancouver BC area, space is money, and its hard to have enough room to have a 'shop'
I had the fair amount of luck of being born into a rural region, with an old german timber framed house. Those tend to be a bit larger than what you would usually have close to a larger city and most of them have small barns, providing basically a great place to start a shop. "Deal with it." *puts on meme glasses
Lol Ilya xD
Like a boss
it's just mind blowing how talented they are people really should give them more praise then just request after request
***** Yes but it also take talent to be able to do it aswell you utter spanner, just like saying everyone is talentless, jesus some people are brain dead
+PulzeGaming ...
I want to praise Ilya's hair alone!
I also had to call out Ilya free-hand hammering a straight line. THAT is skill, right there.
I love Ilya and his random humor
Pieshka Coltic I like the googly eyes on his cap
He was even wearing a doge shirt in another vid
Makes it all perfect
Ilya is such an artist
When he was on Forged In Fire, he probably had my favorite final build out of all the episodes. Does really good work.
+Edward Sun If you look at the beginning of the video he kinda looks like Jesus.
He's also Hawkeye. He put the arrow right through the eye slit in the helmet :) Yay! :D
And also one in the knee :P
Sebastian Tworek movie Hawkeye or comic book hawkeye
Pretty safe to say next up is Genji's dragon blade....
Or Saladin's axe.
+Bthsr71 Nah genji's katana
Bthsr71 Your the only one I've seen bring that blade up.
NotYourAvgGamer They've done tons of sword, but not many large axes by comparison. This would help diversify their collection.
Or Hansos Bow
Can't wait to see some Overwatch builds like Genji's blade or even Hanzo's bow, that'd awesome.
Not to mention Raiden's sword from Metal Gear Rising and bows from Marvel's Hawkeye and DC's Green Arrow.
agreed
They have done too many katanas already, so I'd say Mercy's staff or even Symmetra's sentry on DIY Prop Shop.
doomfist gauntlets
Reinhardt's alternate axe
1:39 Ilya: Deal with it.
Me: *Watches Ilya slap on a pair of just deal with it glasses* OH YEAH! GO GET EM, ILYA!!! COMPLETE WITH JUST DEAL WITH IT GLASSES!!!

make a series where each and every one of you amazing black smiths make your own sword/knife or other melee weapon. The weapon of choice you guys would personally would want in the exact configuration if you had to take it to battle.
would be very interresting to see what you guys would pick and come up with, would show us how you people look at mediaval weapons and what you would want in one in terms of features.
like if you watchers agree so that they may see this
That is such a good idea, it's a bit like they did when they made their perfect zombie weapons.
exactly what i thought, lets hope they see this
That would be so cool
"Forged in Fire" on History Channel
Yeah but Ilya already kicked ass on that, put some other smiths to shame lol.
I'm pretty impressed they put out videos this quick. these jobs look like they take a long time to do.
depends. with the team they have and their AWE some skills it Dosen't take as long as one blacksmith
Especially given they have to produce weapons and armour for their normal clients as well, including likely hundreds of movie props and prop weapons per year, as well as non-commercial clients.
There doesn't appear to be 'seasons' for the series, with downtime used to make the weapons pending the season. My guess is that they pick one thing a week to do with the time and resources they have between other clients, get someone else to handle the simplex inventory, and try and build a backlog.
they have been working on this one when the movie first came out
Good chance some of these builds are for clients to begin with
I believe they prepared and recorded a lot during the season break.
Did they just announce him the winner right when he showed up? Lol 😂
make the infinity gauntlet
Maybe they are saving it until the next avengers movie!
+Veggieburger ...or when Marvel finally stops teasing us with after credits cameo appearances.
I think this is a Prop Shop item.
Ilya is indeed a MASTER armourer. Such talent.

+Hellsong89 wow guys relax. it's just for reference and neat to have a monetary reference. I appreciate the amount of work put in and as one of the poors, it's just interesting to know.

Yeah they look like he's having a full on derp session :P The lower jaw area looks really fat but narrow too
It sorta makes me think more of the stereotypical gladiator's helmet more than the shredder. The Thraex styled ones.
amazing. so many hours spent crafting. i would love see more armor episodes.
Could you make the Rivan King’s sword, from David & Leigh Eddings’s _Belgariad_ and _Malloreon_ series of books? I especially want to see Lauren’s or Ferenc’s take on the divine Stone of Aldur, the sword’s pommel.

if they did it alongside something like his secondary blade I think you would actually be quite original, and also a katana. also Illya is a fucking amazing katana smith
Your Blacksmithing Skill is definitely 100!
Would you guys Please consider making an IRL Dawnguard War Axe from Skyrim?

Next book should come out in 2016 - perfect time!!!
what about deathstrokes God killer sword
cartertj04
cartertj04 And his Helmet !!!
ilya sure is a wonderful blacksmith. the way he moves the metal. master work.
Can you guys make Corvo's folding blade and mask.
