For those who are not familar to Chinese culture: Straight blade sword and Curved blade sword are actually two different weapon class in China. Curved swords are most commonly been regarded as "Knife"(刀, Dao), while the Straight sword is what people commonly regarded as "Sword"(剑,Jian) I believe there is nothing to do with Qingshihuangdi(秦始皇, the empiror of Qin dynasty over 2200 years ago) cause the most of Chinese uses straight swords back into 220 B.C. Swords (I mean straight swords) has irreplaceable status in ancient Chinese culture. They was believed had lives and spirits at that time. And more importantly, they are regarded as a symbol that represented social status. The multitudes are not allow to arm with a sword. A man should at least be a lowest class royalty---Shi(士)to be armed with a sword. Dandao is actually Miaodao(苗刀), a kind of weapon that Chinese army used in the southeast area to fight against Japanese pirates back in the Song Dynasty(1200 A.D.). The Japanese learned to make Tangdao(唐刀) swords from Tang dynasty (618-907 A.D.) Tangdao was like a straight blade Katana. And after hundreds of years, ancient Japanese innovated it to create a Katana liked sword, called Tachi(太刀/たち). When the japanese pirates invaded southeast of China in Song Dynasty, the Chinese soldiers found the Tachi really worked out well during the fight. So they imitated the Tachi and innovated it again. This is what we called Dandao Sword today. This is the reason why Dandao looks so similar to Japanese Katana.
Have you seen The Sword Identity? a very long sword is the feature weapon in it, used to fight the Japanese pirates. It was exceedingly long, but only like the 2 feet at the tip were sharp. Quite interesting.
That's a gorgeous blade. I really love it when you guys do the more manual labor intensive builds with more traditional techniques. Swords are an anachronism. They have no place on the modern battlefield, they only exist today as an extension mankind's will to shape the world around us. The labor intensive techniques and the care and attention put into the construction of these blades gives them a better soul, for lack of a better word.
I agree, fabricating fancy sci-fi or fantasy stuff is nice to see, but the real beauties on this channel (or anywhere else) are the traditional pieces. Not just because the end result usually looks alot more finished, but the process itself just feels so much more interesting to watch.
These traditional forging episodes are far and away my favourites. I know you guys are skilled, but this is showcasing your abilities on an entirely different level.
They are god damed good, mate ! They are not oly doing the things skillfull, but in an artistik way. There are not too-many real people like them today.

Each of them has their own speciality. I'm sure the Stagmers can do stuff that Illya can't do as well. No doubt though, on builds like this, Illya shines.
He does seemingly get all the credit he deserves, he just seems underrated by fans. It is clearly in some builds who "leads" the process, Illya does this for most 'old technique' weapons. He also has some incredible skill in actual hadwork. To put it shortly: he's the best
The Stagmers are very good. Illya takes the lead on builds like these which seem more impressive, but there are plenty of great builds led by Matt that are also very high quality. Also, Matt is the best at grinding. He does the job better than the other people that I've seen.
it's not to say the stagmers aren't impressive because they are. it's just that ilya is just on a different level when it comes to his wide variety of skills and he's still improving rapidly.
It's funny cause if you saw the Forged in Fire TV show episode with Ilya on it, that dude's an armor specialist so all the weapon skills are things he's just kinda picked up on the side.
I would like to see an episode dedicated to some general aspects of forging weapons. After watching this channel for a long time, I have learned a lot about it, but still it would be great to see some explanations about the decision making process
I would agree. I have a degree in mechanical engineering, so I have some knowledge on metallurgy and materials, but it would be cool to hear their take on processes.

This is awesome. Making a sword that is 400 years old using techniques from the time period. Wow. I want them to make a Schiavona sword. The one that is seen in Assassin's Creed 2.
the sword goes back to the time of Qin Shih Huang Di aka the first emperor, thats 2000 years ago, the vid says so at the start. and they did not have power hammers back then
you know what you should do? Make a collab with the SlowMoGuys and let them film some of your forging (and then maybe some ofthe demos too) in 1000s of fps.
First, I love the weapon in the video, it's beautiful and it's really kool. Second, I would like to clarify some historical background. It's Tang-dao and tang-dao is a straight-single-bladed knife. It originated from the Han dynasty, the 'shou huan dao' (ring-pommel knife), which the martial artist was right about combating riders. However, when it came to the Tang dynasty, it evolved into a blade for foot-soldiers or a secondary weapon for riders. The blade is originally designed to pierce armour as well as cutting flesh, therefore, it is straight with a narrower edge (The katana's edge goes about half-width, whereas the Tang-dao only a third). The Japanese adapted the Tang-dao and created a curved blade with a thinner shaper edge to cut through flesh, but very fragile against armour, since armours weren't common in Japan, but was way more common amongst militants on the Eurasian continent. The next dynasty Song abandoned the production of Tang daos for a thicker blade, since Song was so rich (half the planet's gdp at the time) that they can afford production with more materials whilst simplifying the manufacturing process. The art of Tang-dao was lost since that point, both the manufacturing process and the way to wield it. A similar blade is reinvented called the "chik-ka-dao" (invented by General Chik, 'ka' basically means 'in the heritage from' or 'in the family of') which derived from katanas of the Japanese pirates. Its wielding was very different from katana, it has a longer blade and was used at times as semi-spears, as it was invented to fend off pirates in coastal and naval combat, where range can be crucial. Its usage was very distanced from the Tang-dao already. The manual that the martial art guy in the video was actually referring to this Chik-ka-dao. In previous comments, someone also mentioned a miao-dao (translated as the straw-blade, for its thin profile) it is more used like sabres on horseback, slicing through enemy at high-speeds, which actually came later in history. These these weapons I mentioned have very similar profiles and they get mixed up a lot, even by Chinese people, so I don't blame the video makers. As for the video, it is a magnificent blade they made, I love the final product very much. However, I do have to say that they made a katana.
I don't think they're wrong. They do mean Dandao of the 16th century aka Wodao (Japanese sword), which is an adapted form of the classic Japanese long sword. Yes General Chik adapted it, but the manual they referred to called it a Dandao. See here en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wodao
John Cao You are right, I missed the start of the video at 00:14. I was a bit confused when I heard "a tradition from Qin", since DanDao is a derivative of the WoDao and not a Chinese tradition.

@@nyalan8385 this. Blocking an enemy strike at full swing, clashing with armour, chopping through bone - they put all this care into crafting swords for a reason. A blade that would shatter from one bad slam like this would be worthless as a weapon of war.
while I agree it's bad form, modern steel is a spring which is what makes it so practical, it can bounce and bend and not break or weaken...by the standards of 400 years ago modern steel is kind of magical :)
@@skykid Its de anniversary of the manual, but the weapon itself exists since about 2000 years ago, as it is from the time of the unifier of china, who did so 220 somethings before Christ. Also, the steel that they are making is made the same way it was at the time is it not? Regardless, a fragile weapon is a unfit weapon, no matter the times. Especially a melee weapon.
@@thekingofcardboard He said "instead of using a silk wrap", so he was clearly referring to the material. I just don't get how they put so much effort into this piece, make most of the steel from scratch, then wrap it in freaking nylon.
I'm thinking that the Rakuyo would work better, after all, it would be unbelievably difficult to get the two Blades of Mercy to actually stick together like they do in the game. The Rakuyo would also be a rather unique weapon for them to wield, as it's constituted of a sword and a knife, rather than two knives.
If they do Corvo's folding blade, they need to do the military's or Daud's as well. I am curious as to how they'll manage the folding and locking mechanism of it.
I don't think he's a swordsman, see how when he cuts the base of the items moves a little? That means he isn't swinging the blade in the direction he's cutting. He's close, but close still dulls the blade of a sword. The other guys are pretty good though.
Would definitely be a cool build! There isn't much viking about true Ulfberht swords though. They just found most of them in Scandinavia, because pagans buried the swords with their owners, which preserved the steel. The name suggests they were originally forged by Frankish smiths, who used steel from central Asia or India. Vikings probably traded some of these swords or simply stole them during raids. If vikings forged Ulfberhts themselves, they also got their raw, top-quality steel from central Asia or India just like the Franks.
***** I'm not even sure whether the pattern welding (twisting rods) you describe was actually done to get stronger swords. I read a study that concluded pattern welding was probably purely decorative, as the pattern welded blades they had tested, did not outperform swords with more simple constructions such as iron cores and steel edges.
although the assembly is almost every time the simplest and shortest of the processes (except for builds with a lot of mechanics involved in the piece, but there they show the assembly)
lokabrenna It being simple and short is a reason it should be included. Watching it come together is a big part of why I like these videos, rather than just watching a few minutes of forging and grinding then a bunch of plastic bottles exploding.
The Demos aren't that long either, so no reason to mention those. What I wanted to say is that the assemby part may be so short in each build, that they can't get enough footage from it. Maybe what we see is just what they could film in entirety.
I love historical builds. Some suggestions: The Egyptian Khopesh (out of bronze perhaps), The Zweihander The Halberd The Roman Gladius A Khukri Cavalry Sable A scimitar Apologies if some of these have already been made before, I didn't double check.
Lovely build. Never knew of the existence of the dandao before this. I would love to see you folks make more historical weapons like this in the future. (As an aside, my only real gripe about the piece is the use of paracord instead of the traditional wrap, though this is a very minor gripe, as it certainly isn't impossible to replace and I can understand you not exactly having the traditional wrap on hand and needing to make do because of time constraints. I appreciate your honesty and being upfront about using the paracord too.)
SCHOOL:What do you wanna be? Kid#1i wanna be a cop Kid#2 I wanna be a fire fighter Kid#3i wanna be an astronaut Ilya and Matt we wanna be baddass and make swords
Teacher: Uhh.... sorry Matthew and Ilya, but... that's not exactly a profitable job in a time like this. Matt: Yeah, it is! Ilya: We'll show you what swords we'll make when we grow up, and how legends will never die!
I have been saying this forever, before the last group even made Frostmourn. This episode would have been a perfect time to do it because of Illidans return to the game with the launch of Legion.
Make a 100% traditional build, handmade inlays, handsmelted, forged and with old traditional equipment ... *then give it a paracord wrap* ! It's extremely impressive though, no doubt, but couldn't you guys have used something, i don't know ... more traditional for the handle ?!

He has another small blade, but that's his dagger
Who else thought in the thumbnail it was David Carradine?
me!
it's david carradine reincarnated.
he passed away long time ago
Guess what? he is back...
That's what I thought so too.
This is easily my favourite episode.
Ilia is fricken wizard.
he over romanticizes every aspect of his work it's kind of annoying. he is a katana fan boy through and through.
+Nick Graham Eh, he clearly loves what he does and it's quite nice to see that.
That's the thing, for him its his "passion" and not "work". Everyone likes to talk about his/hers passion.
Funny thing is, he prefers ancient Turkish stuff. Ottoman Empire armour.
Interesting. I hope he's given some Turkish build in the future.
I would love to see Genji's sword from Overwatch
Ryūjin no ken o kurae!
***** most people are XD
Isn't that hanzo's line...tsk tsk
Yuji no kaiaoken!
+Psychodelic no, Hanzo's is ryu ga waga teki o kurao
Meh to
I could spend all day watching Ilia engrave. Damn hes got skill
17:20 was so painful watching him slam that sword to crap.
If it can't take being simply swung into a table it can't take the hardships of the battlefield
Not as painful as watching that slow clumsy looking "teacher" wield the weapon.
Something from warframe! Loads of cool ass melee weapons in that game c:
seeing a gram would be awesome, however impractical
war is good idea
They oughta do a Skana. It's the most recognizable of them all!
Dakra prime dayum
They should make the galatine
want to know what this video made me really thirsty for some reason, guess ill go out and have some orange juice.
wait what?
prob, because you can feel all the heat from the forging.. lol
perhaps you should have some SMITH AND FORGE HARD CIDER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! BLAHHHH ADVERTISING BLAHHHH
Pat Herrmann sorry not old enough, ill stick with my OJ
its that beer advert in the forge shop..... it is SO TEMPTING
love those historical weapons being brought back to life
"Build me an army worthy of Mordor." Iliya: We have work to do...
Dark Souls Fume Knight Ultra Great Sword
ps82xela they already did a dark souls sword
FUGS you
You think you’re funny don’t you
You should make Genji's dragonblad from overwatch
That would be epic
I was just about to say! They should do Genji's sword and Hanzo's bow!
Hanzo's bow is really cool but i never seen them make a bow
+Jay Bird what about Katnesses bow?
I forgot about that one if seen it but forgot that thanks for reminding me
Kenshin Reverse Blade Sword!
+1 Rurouni Kensin's Sakabato
Its just a normal katana sword with the cutting edge inversed.Nothing special there.
So? They've done other katana.
+Kevin Rouse That's the point. That episode would be boring as Hell.
So??? They have done enough Katanas... i wanna see the reverse blade...
I love how he says 100% historical, as a paracord wrap is being attached. Lol
My thoughts exactly.
Same
"Paracord wrap" is a style of wrap, not necisarily reffering to the material they used.
@@thekingofcardboard He said "instead of using a silk wrap", so he was clearly referring to the material.
I just don't get how they put so much effort into this piece, make most of the steel from scratch, then wrap it in freaking nylon.
Daniel Schroedinger
Not to mention the W1 steel
dunno it it's possible but what I'd really LOVE to see are the blades of mercy from Bloodborne. That'd be a REAL masterpiece.
if*
I'm thinking that the Rakuyo would work better, after all, it would be unbelievably difficult to get the two Blades of Mercy to actually stick together like they do in the game. The Rakuyo would also be a rather unique weapon for them to wield, as it's constituted of a sword and a knife, rather than two knives.
+Miner49er201 But are good suggestions. As for the Blades of Mercy, just forge in some powerful magnets
ILYA IS BACK YEAAA
WOOO
i bet this sword is why he disappear for a time, because making it took a lot of time
Ihsan Ayyasy
took him 400 years i suppose
+Archontasius LOL!!
They said it has a pommel... YOU CAN END SOMEONE RIGHTLY WITH THIS SWORD.
Also: FF7CC Genesis' "Rapier"
Nice Skallagrim reference. ;)
ahhh, so i see skallagrim has no excuse for disliking this japanese sword then.... ;)
Exept it's Chinese
+James Wood It's a Chinese sword though
WhiteSaucage Scar Sephiroth391 lol yeah i realised that a bit after commenting but couldn't be bothered to come back and change it, nice spot anyway
This is one of the best reforged video ive ever seen in youtube.
corvos sword from dishonored....
I feel like a broken record since ive been asking for over a year now :(
Yeah great!
Hopefully they will do it around the time dishonored two comes out, they tend to work like that.
That would be amazing, especially with Dishonored 2 coming out in November!
Keep at it. They eventually gave us Artorias Greatsword.
Shut up and stop complaining.
Do corvo's knife sword thingy. And make it functional.
Been saying that for a year already. We have to wait til the release of Dishonored 2 in November I guess.
+Gordon Beck ikr
awsome idea!!!
yesssss
If they do Corvo's folding blade, they need to do the military's or Daud's as well. I am curious as to how they'll manage the folding and locking mechanism of it.
This looks sharper than most of their other swords, given how it cuts through things.
This Sword had the best demo performance of all your builds, the way you sliced through all those cans in a row at the end...
forge the Monkey kings bar also called Sun WuKongs 孙悟空 Jing gu Bang 金箍棒
Was in dota longer than smites been a game...
+Edgar Allan Poe was never exist irl
But it would just be a stick though with both side painted red.
+Arcane Teddy not a myth. my peepee can do that!
yes the great staff from goku.
the swordsman in blue looks like David Carradine
I thought the same
he really does
Haha, I thought the same exact thing!
RIP David
I don't think he's a swordsman, see how when he cuts the base of the items moves a little? That means he isn't swinging the blade in the direction he's cutting. He's close, but close still dulls the blade of a sword. The other guys are pretty good though.
Very impressive! Bravo!
... all that beer on the ground :P
No worries.
It was given to them.
They'll make more-give to a cause for a show.
Wow so awesome you guys did a great job with making it I especially really like what he did with the dragon
Do a completely authentic Ulfberht the way the Vikings used to!
Yes to anything Viking!
Agree with that!
Since there is no 'set' way or style of the 'ulfberht', that wouldn't really be possible...
I would love to see the Sekki from Noragami.
it's literally a katana without any guard or grip lol
It's only a silver katana blade, with some clothing as a handle...
you would need the soul of a child
I hate that you guys rarely ever show assembly anymore.
UP to those who edit it .
Bill Collison Well yeah, presumably the people behind the AWEme channel can read this and hopefully include more of that process in the future.
although the assembly is almost every time the simplest and shortest of the processes (except for builds with a lot of mechanics involved in the piece, but there they show the assembly)
lokabrenna It being simple and short is a reason it should be included.
5:13 Dam that was shiny, love this stuff so much
Make Sword of Goujian please! That 2500 year old sword is still sharp to this day!
Chris Sonny the way and the material of making that sword is still unknown, id like to see it too!
Chris Sonny it's bronze
Ian Kyle Maturan the most dense ore in Tamriel pheraps all of Nirn
Ryan Brewer clearly it was not bronze, people saying it was built by meteorite
It's roughly 65% copper 25% tin 10% lead and iron
As your coming up on 1 one year on this I'd love to see another old Chinese weapon, like the guandao, that would be awesome.
oh yeah, i grew some chest hair and now I feel like I have to go save china now.
Lmao
Not sure Mulan had much chest hair.
Neenjah Rammus she will once she watches this video
lynda y This video "will make a man out of" her?
Lol. Very comical.
You know what guys, you are awesome...
This channel always full of history, thats why i like it...
Jinsoyun´s Twilightsword (Dämmerschneide) from Blade and Soul!
Aaaah that would be AAAAAWSOMMMME!!!!
Make Genji´s Dragonblade from Overwatch pls.
Literally just put this up myself. Would love to see it.
+v. Logos and shurikens too
or reinhardt's hammer
that would be waaaayyy to heavy lol
no no no its powered by jets. sure you need to be 500 pounds of muscle to use it but it could happen
If you guys do more historical blades I'd love to see the Ulfbhert...authentic Viking sword
I love historical builds. Some suggestions:
The Egyptian Khopesh (out of bronze perhaps),
The Zweihander
The Halberd
The Roman Gladius
A Khukri
Cavalry Sable
A scimitar
Apologies if some of these have already been made before, I didn't double check.
Soul Edge... you guys can pull it off, I know you can!
omfg hell yea
yass
I'd love to see the original one used by Cervantes.
yes! another huge sword build would be awesome!
question is, which version? There has to be 4-5 types of Nightmare's Soul Edge after SC5
Kid#1i wanna be a cop
Kid#2 I wanna be a fire fighter
Kid#3i wanna be an astronaut
Ilya and Matt we wanna be baddass and make swords
Teacher: Uhh.... sorry Matthew and Ilya, but... that's not exactly a profitable job in a time like this.
Matt: Yeah, it is!
Ilya: We'll show you what swords we'll make when we grow up, and how legends will never die!
@@wyrdplae8586 kid#5 i want to be their assistant
thanks for bring this beautiful blade to life. it is so beautiful.
Warglaives of Azzinoth....
This!
pretty sure they have already made those, Illadins weapons right?
ah, back when WoW was a good game...
I have been saying this forever, before the last group even made Frostmourn. This episode would have been a perfect time to do it because of Illidans return to the game with the launch of Legion.
I dont think they are prepared
Genji's Sword from Overwatch
Isn't that a Laser Katana?
+Wolfendoom 3D magic no joke
if they can do a sword based off Yodas lightsaber, I'm pretty sure they could find a way
YASS
Reverse blade Katana.
Nice idea.
*Battousai!*
^^^^ SPAM REVERSE BLADE KATANA
always wondered how u would go across forging that.... would love to see it
KENSHIN!!! I seriously want to see this now.
Watching all of this forging videos kinda makes me realize how much fire had helped humanity...
Ilya , i want to be your apprentice !!!!
Me 2
Igor POHALINO Pohlin me too
Igor count me too
И я хочу! :)
bobby boonta me number after 2
I would love to study with these guys
Beautiful, elegant swordsmanship...
This has gotta be one of my Faves!
It;s beautiful to bring something to life from ancient time.
Awesome job guys! It's good to see that ancient Chinese blades are getting some attention as well.
Awesome! I'm from China I really like this video, amazing work!
Making A Dandao is now officially on the bucket list
"All the smiths...." Oh yeah you mean Ilya, Ilya, Ilya, Ilya, and Ilya. 😂😂
Paolo Profeta Don't forget Ilya, he was a part of it, too.
Make a 100% traditional build, handmade inlays, handsmelted, forged and with old traditional equipment ... *then give it a paracord wrap* ! It's extremely impressive though, no doubt, but couldn't you guys have used something, i don't know ... more traditional for the handle ?!
It would probably take a lot of time. They have more work to do
Paul Francis Goneda They could use a leather band and do the exact same wrap ...
im sure they could have but probably went with paracord over something like silk for the durability
they actually did a very much traditional build when they made the kill bill hantori hanzo sword
Its the material....if they use leather strips, time taken to wrap the handle will be the same.
Genjis sword from overwatch
YES
2 things;
1. I don't know how they're going to make the green side of it.
2. ANOTHER katana? really? I mean I love katanas but I'd like to see variety.
Angus Graham Well Im not sayinhg they should make it next. Maybe some other time. Maybe Hanjos Bow nad arrow
+Angus Graham (WyrmJaw) maybe they could do Reinhardt's hammer
Owen Donahue That would take A LOT of metal and a Jet so idk.
Everytime I watch this kind of videos makes me feel satisfied
