  • A routine press photo-op in 1937 ended up recording the explosion of the greatest airship ever built.

    Special thanks to David Fowler, who generously allowed us to use his drawing of the plan of the Hindenburg (00:13 of the video). See more of his work here: www.highriskadv...
    In May 1937, the airship Hindenburg burned up while approaching Lakehurst, New Jersey, on its first flight to the US that year. A flying symbol of pride for Nazi Germany, the Hindenburg was the biggest and most elaborate zeppelin ever built. At a time when airplanes were only carrying one or two people across the Atlantic Ocean, the Hindenburg was flying paid passengers, who enjoyed its dining room, reading room, passenger lounge, and even smoking room. It was an iconic luxury vessel, but it was filled with hydrogen, a flammable gas. And when it rushed its landing in New Jersey, it ended up exploding in front of a waiting group of newsreel cameras and becoming the first aviation disaster filmed as it was taking place. Sam Shere’s photo of the moment just before the ship was entirely engulfed is now an iconic snapshot that manages to perfectly frame the entire disaster.

    • @abrahamwilberforce9824
      @abrahamwilberforce9824 5 ปีที่แล้ว +425

      The smoking room was specially build to not leak any spark of any kind. This is why they had one designated smoming room unlike smoking bascially everywhere, what was the standard at the time.
      Also the smoking room is below the hydrogen balloon so the quickly rising hydrogen would not reach it.

      Why? Due to the over-precaution of the crew, that one room was probably the most flame-retardant on the ship. More than likely also had people in it during the crash, considering cigarettes actually had paid advertisements, commercials and endorsements on television in those days.

    • @ShePudding
      @ShePudding 5 ปีที่แล้ว +68

      Yeah... It was hard to watch. Thinking about how I would have reacted... Too afraid to jump. Others pushing past you; pushing you down. First the rooms, people and anything not nailed down turns sideways, and then, if you’re not lucky, the fire burns your skin off your bones and collapses your lungs. You can only hope these people suffocated suddenly, over mere seconds... And those deaths will be replayed for years for education... entertainment... profit.
      I mean, the video itself is morally neutral. Information in any form can always be useful, and the awareness over this tragedy may have saved countless lives. But the responses in the comments are... disheartening.I guess that’s how our history teachers might feel replaying the World Trade Center videos to their bored, wholly detatched students...

    I'm sick of these bear minimum videos. Talk about the Hindenburg's extra flammable "protective coating" (iron3oxide & aluminum powder), or the fact that it was the *only* airship to explode on camera. Also every airship had a simple and effective method for dealing with static building up on it's surface (a grounding wire rope) prior to landings.

    Its not 100% true about hydrogen and helium
    Yes it was hard to use helium bc of the US, but it wasnt all.
    Hydrogen can also lift more compared to helium.

    • @daveha4445
      @daveha4445 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's not like you'll ever fill your party balloons with Hydrogen? Yes, it may lift a little more, but that's not the main reason at all. Also limited supply WAS a big problem. So if they had a choice, not involving bazillion liters of then-rare material, they surely would have.

    • @GEKay-xt2cq
      @GEKay-xt2cq 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Pure helium lifts 93% of what pure hydrogen does. But on a ship that size, that's an issue, as was the substantially higher price of helium -- this was a commercial enterprise.

      No problem with a paid subscription here, Vox is one of the best youtube channels out there. It's juste the oh-so-fake tone they use every time that gets me. It's 2019 on youtube, you launched a patreon like service, like every other channel, you don't need to bash our brains at the end of each video.... I should precise that I indeed pay for this service, just disturbed by the heavy advertising coming from Vox. Having such a great channel you'd think they understand implicitly that you don't need to advertise that much if your content is great...

Side note: The "ohh the humanity" audio is also a key (if not equally important) ingredient to this disaster being hugely impactful-------remember, radio was big back then too.

      Airships can provide luxury as if it were a cruise liner, but in a way that’s in the air and in a quicker way as well. They provide the transportation Planes give you, but the space and luxury a Ship/ocean liner can provide as well. All you have to do is use helium, and make sure maintenance is on point. Of course improve on the technology as well. Many planes are faulty today, as well as ships. If airships become a thing again they will also of course be faulty, but this isn’t something we should fear.

    By definition you do not lift a hot air balloon with Hydrogen. You use hot air which is not hydrogen. And I think the date given is misleading as it not actually referring to the first hydrogen filled balloon which was later.
