    RTV silicone IS a gasket, not a sealer per-se. Use it as a filler in corners, on china walls that take a blow-prone gasket (leaving the gasket off), or lightly smear it around water ports on manifolds and heads to reduce the chance of seepage. When you use silicone RTV in excess with a cork or fiber gasket, it just squeezes out like that!! On two machined surfaces you can use it sparingly AS a gasket with nothing else.

      Yep, i dont recall using that much. We put a few of these engines together and never encountered this problem before.

    Damn brother, sorry to hear that. I know you will get it right. Hope I don't have that problem as well. I just put a new gasket on my 461. Hoping to have mine running by summer. Rocket Power brother

    that sucks man but youll get it back together in no time! as someone else said, you dont want to coat a gasket in RTV. only use it on the corners of the oil pan gasket where the flat of the block meets the curved part of the rear seal and where the front oil pan gasket meets. and around your water ports for the intake and the china wall of the valley pan. the less RTV you can use in an engine the better because any excess will wind up in your pickup screen

      I just didnt think we used that much. Never had this problem before. If the crank can be turned, the motor should be back in business shortly.

    Yes when I do a pan gasket specially cork. I only use a dab of black or orange RTV on each side of the front and rear seal. I have had the best luck installing oil pan gaskets. Especially cork. I clean the block surface with acetone. Same with the mating service on the oil. Then the oil pan gasket. I spray two or three coats of copper tack gasket spray on both sides. Buy making sure the block in the pan are free of oil. That gasket will now be glued to the pan and the block. I will fingertight all the bolts come back two hours later and tighten it down. Because the gasket is basically glued it will never push out.

    I'm waiting for something to happen with my Toronados engine. I got an offy tunnel, ram motorhome headers, msd pro billet with digital 6al box, ported my c heads cam, lifters, rockers, sealed power lower (previous owner.) I've ran it hard a few times but no kaboom yet. I'll get it happy tuned and going then I'll change more stuff because something will break or not be happy. No oiling issues so far luckily. Overheated a few times but got that fixed. Don't give up its part of cars. Break something, replace it, and or upgrade it.

      Ive always had pretty good luck with these motors, they seem to hold together pretty well. This one didnt die because it was weak ya know, you should be fine id say.

  • @jalopyjustin
    @jalopyjustin 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Dang that sucks, but it looks like the rods and crank are savable. On my engine I did the opposite and didn't use enough rtv on the oil pan and had a bad leak. These Olds engines seem so finicky when it comes to sealing.

    Why does no one notice that the bearing shell with the oil hole is in the cap, not the block? On at least two mains?

      Most aftermarket bearing sets bone with holes on both upper and lower bearing insets. Not sure why they go that.

    Was on edge, hoping all the bearings would have made it good though. Shit, and that's crazy, me as well, every time I've used silicone for the gasket it's always been fine. Ahh man, sorry that happened. Just, shit..

      @@UsefulEntertainment I sure hope so those aren't cheep. I ran into an issue years back when i was building a 66 425 with my Dad and its the first one of those we had ever done, we have done 455s 330s 400s , we found out the hard way the 425 is the only olds engine with a 45 degree cam as opposed to the 39degree all the other 61 and up v8s lol and the lifters oil hole is in a different spot on a 425 lol needless to say the lifters never pumped up and the car ran like ass, a phone call to Joe Mondello's son and we got all there stuff and it still runs great 10+ years later. Hope you crank can be mended thats truly a sad sight after all the work you did.

      Geez looks like a lot of silicone. Atleast you'll know next time I usually never pit silicone on a gasket it actually pushes the gasket out. And when I use silicone I'll smooth it out flat

    Yes I know I'm a little late to the comment section. Other people have mentioned too much RTV gasket sealant on the oil pan. Yes that's one factor. The other factor is that you used that gray RTV sealant. Even though the tube says it's sets up in 20 minutes and fully cures in 24 hours. Or something close to that time range I don't remember off hand. For some reason I have never had luck with that grey RTV. It seems to never dry. I have put it on parts and came back a week later and it was still tacky. I only use the black or the orange RTV.

      Grey is for diff covers and such ,not supposed to dry out.
