    "Byzantium" was actually the literal continuation of Rome. The Empire had several emperors, nothing new in Roman history. And then the western half fell. The east lived on. No one even called it Byzantium back then. The "Byzantines" and pretty much everyone else called it the Roman Empire, or Roman Kingdom. Then when the HRE was formed, the Latins and western Europeans started calling it the "Greek Empire". But it was still objectively the remnants of Rome. The term "Byzantine" wasn't used at all till a century after the fall of Constantinople, when some German historian in the HRE used it, since he didn't acknowledge it as Rome. Despite it literally being Rome. Probably the most successful propaganda in world history.

    • @syrialak101
      @syrialak101 3 ปีที่แล้ว +29

      I think it should be noted the sheer amount of hatred between the Catholic and Orthodox worlds as much of the Catholic world(Even the Pope) simply did not acknowledge the Byzantines as the true successors to the Roman Empire but instead chose the Holy Roman Empire.

      The aztecs were never called aztecs, they were called Mexicas/Meshicas and their language was a version of Nahuatl that they called “Mexican” so Karens in the US are technically correct when they said they dont speak mexican.

    • @niclas3672
      @niclas3672 3 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      @@syrialak101 True, that's how they would have seen it. But my point is not that the Byzantines were the "true successors to the Roman Empire". My point is that there never was a Byzantine Empire. The Roman Empire just didn't fall before 1453. It didn't even loose the west permanently after the fall of the west. Italy was reconquered under the reign of Emperor Justinian in the 500's. They held the city of Rome until the mid 700's and still had some holdings in Italy till the 1100's, the last remaining one being in Naples.
      But even if they hadn't retained any control of the west, they would still just have been the Roman Empire. It was seen as one single empire with two emperors at the time when the west fell. Which was not unprecedented, Rome had many periods with several emperors. This time, the Western half just happened to fall. And the east lived on, and even reconquered some of the west for a time.

      @PacificEmperor 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      The Triple Alliance provided that Germany and Austria-Hungary were to assist Italy if it was attacked by France without provocation. In turn, Italy would assist Germany if attacked by France. In the event of a war between Austria-Hungary and Russia, Italy promised to remain neutral. By entering the war on the side of the Triple Entente, Italy merely broke the agreement of the Triple Alliance. Switching sides would entail that they were meant to help Austria-Hungary and Germany in their war but instead became their enemy, or that they were fighting along side Austria-Hungary and Germany but then started fighting along side the Triple Entente.
      In WWII, Italy was invaded by the Allies and eventually surrendered and the Kingdom of Italy deposed Mussolini. After the surrender, there was an Italian civil war with the Italian Resistance and Kingdom of Italy aided by the Allies, and the Italian Socialist Republic aided by Germany. I don't know if calling a civil war is switching sides but I wouldn't.

    At 4:03. This is talking about an incident in the 1970s, when British fishermen were in Iceland waters, taking Icelandic fish. The Icelanders got really pissed off, and they started to ram British fishermen boats, scaring them off. I believe a war was about to explode when cooler heads prevailed in London because, well, it's Iceland. It's not a good look for a former imperial power to bully far smaller countries after just having been accepted into the EEC (precursor to the EU). I believe the fishing waters problem was resolved in Brussels, as both the UK and Iceland were members of the EEC when this happened.

    7:27
    Even though Portugal and England has always (since 1373) been allies, their relations have not always been the best, allies, but not friends, for example, the episode of the "mapa cor-de-rosa", the pink map.
    The Portuguese during the Berlin conference (partition of Africa by European powers) showed up with a map of Africa, where they had coloured in pink the new territories that they wanted to have, annex the territories between Angola and Mozambique, both of these countries already being under Portuguese influence.
    Unfortunately for Portugal, Britain wanted to annex all territories between Cairo and Cape Town, and thus, wanted those territories between Angola and Mozambique too.
    Britain issued an ultimatum to Portugal, demanding that they'd leave the claimed territories.
    Portugal being at the time (late XIX° century) a country who had several troubles, and lost his old might, the King decided, in all logic, to accept Britain's demands, Portugal being not able to risk a war against the first global power.
    This acceptance of such demands, however, made the king even less popular, leading to a greater democratic influence, and, later, the end of monarchy in Portugal.
    Nonetheless, Portuguese people weren't happy with Britain too, and literally had until they joined world war 1 this passage in their hymn: "Contra os Britões, marchar, marchar!' which can be translated to "Against the British, forward, forward!".
    It has later been changed to "Contra os canhões marchar, marchar!" "Against the canons...."
    Hope someone reads all of this.
