    Leonard - I used to have to clean my cocker's ears all the time with a variety of medicated cleaners... and she hated it!! and a few days later they were dirty/infected again. She was always scratching her ears. Until I started to using a pinch of corn starch baby powder mixed with a pinch of athlete's foot powder and gently massaged into a clean dry ears. I even use a q-tip to gently massage the powder down the sides of her ears. she stopped scratching them and I check her ears every few months - but they are still clean over a year later! I'll put a little powder in each ear every few months just for good measure. And my cocker loves it now when I clean her ears! :) Even the vet said she has perfect ears, no sign of infection!! you might want to give it a try. :))

    The opening statement on Cockers is so true. My Joey loves and expects to be groomed (brushed and ear cleaning) at least 3 times a week. As for nail clipping all bets are off. This may seem like a hassle but it is all so worth it :)
    Arrow is very handsome looking fella :)

    I agree you need to take that dog to a vet. My boy suffered from terrible ear smell and build up. After several different vets said different things, it turned out to be a bacterial infection and cleared up rather quickly with a prescription drop.

    glad to be of help. well one indication of too-long claws is when clicking and scratching is heard while the dog walks around; such that in the standing position, the claws are not touching the ground. Good lighting (I often let sunlight pass through the claws) helps increase visibility of the supposedly pinkish 'nail beds', especially when they are dark colored, hope all goes well!

    Well done to both of you and thanks for sharing
    We are considering getting a cocker spaniel but I cannot seem to get a real picture of how it is to own one. The various videos and websites alike paint different pictures. Would you lucky cocker owners help me out please?
    How is it with grooming really? I am guessing that you don’t need to do all that every day , so is a 10 minute brush daily realistic ? Plus then ears and nails once or twice a month? How about trimming? Is it even necessary when brushing every day?
    How about the hair? Is it really so bad even with regular grooming?
    We have a golden retriever that I brush very thoroughly twice a week and even though I am cleaning the floor daily, there’s still a lot of hair around .
    Thanks for reading

    • @leonardjonathanoh
      @leonardjonathanoh  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Aline! Thanks for the kind comments. Daily grooming 10 mins is really more than enough, would mainly comprise of combing / trimming of knots etc.
      For claws it depends on active the dog is, and how regular you bring it out for walks, if there's a lot of clicking noise while the dog walks it's definitely time for claw cutting.
      Trimming is really up to you and how you think your cocker would like his or her fur to be and how comfortable you think their coat is for them in relation to the weather I guess? But once a month is sufficient in my opinion.
      Brushing everyday takes out the dead fur but does not remove growing fur, so even with daily brushing the fur does keep on growing out.
      Regular grooming should not damage the dog's fur, so long as you remain gentle, in fact it would actually make the fur grow out more and healthier.
      I used to have a golden retriever, they definitely do not shed as much as the cocker spaniel. Cocker spaniels grow out fur much faster and the fur tangles very easily, so daily grooming is best. Yes you'll probably have to clean the floor daily :P.
      I'm glad to help :o)

      Hey Leonard Jonathan, Thanks so much for your kind response!
      Sounds good to me, manageable. They are definitely worth it !

    • @leonardjonathanoh
      @leonardjonathanoh  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Definitely worth it :)
      I recall my golden retriever really didn't shed as much as my cocker. Maybe because it had shorter than average fur for goldens. I guess it really depends on the perception of the owner, at least I remember my cocker shedding much more, especially those baby fur that gets all over our clothes :P

      No, not the fur grooming but the nail clipping, my cocker used to shake when it came to that, even though never hurt him by cutting it too short. The're like people with different traits.
      Well for some reason mine was dreading it, probably got traumatized by one of the groomers at some point, and from then on he was literally shaking even before I'd drop him off... felt to sorry for the poor pooch. :(

Very good was something like reward after gromming. Usually i gave him a nice beef delicacy, which i reward him only after grooming. • @leonardjonathanoh
      @leonardjonathanoh  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @JDM to me, cocker spaniels shed a lot, though there are a lot of other breeds that shed as much or even more. Generally the fluffier the dog, the more it sheds. Labradors don't shed very much because they don't grow very long fur naturally. Hope i answered your question :)

My only thing to add is my dog likes warm solution instilled during bath time and massaged in from the outside of the ear (while the solution works its way within the canal) so that the inner canal becomes saturated.

      Stacy Kendrick Carothers-Johnson i'm definitely not that great a trainer to make Arrow behave like how he appears in the video. In fact a lot has to do with his personality, he's probably more comfortable with me handling him because i spend more time with him as compared to my other family members. And of course the more often i groom him the better i become at grooming helps him which helps him learn over time that the groomer won't hurt him, but this i'd say explains only 10% of why he's calm; 90% i'd definitely attribute to his calm nature.

    Do you have any general tips for me?
    also how do i prevent ear infections?

    • @leonardjonathanoh
      @leonardjonathanoh  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jomel M. thats amazing, well i'll give you my tips from my own experience; first thing is get a oil-based ear cleaner and don't get those water-based ones which adds dampness to the inner ear. Especially during hot and wet seasons, check their ears more regularly and clean them weekly at the least. Use your sense of smell: if it smells sweet there could be a yeast infection especially when you spot a thin layer of white hair covering the inner ear, hiding the pinkness of the natural color. Don't forget to trim the little hairs on the inside of the ears that grow out rather fast (those contribute to infections tremendously). And of course if you bring your dog out to swim if he takes a shower ensure post-activity dabbing off of water to dry the ears completely (this is pretty obvious). If you can stick to these i'd say the cocker could be safe from them. Oh and watch their behavior if they keep scratching or rubbing their ears against the ground you know there's something up (the ears are itchy) -- this is usually seen in beginning stages. not a laundry list but those are the main things :)

    I've noticed that every (western) hunting dog breed I know seems to have hanging ears. Is it just because they're all related/descended from the same strain of dogs, or is there an actual advantage to having droopy ears? The only thing I see is an increased risk of ear infections...

    • @leonardjonathanoh
      @leonardjonathanoh  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      empress kandi well i can barely remember how i handled arrow when he was 5 months old but if i recall correctly it definitely wasn't easy when they're young. there's a little training to do e.g. toilet training etc, and arrow didn't really like showers or grooming just like yours. I guess it really about being calm yourself and if they don't want to be groomed you can't force them, 2 minutes is pretty good if you can just use those 2 minutes a day, one day to comb, one day to clean the ears, another to clip, it trains you to do as much as you can and you get better, and i think it should slowly work up to 3 minutes soon it'll be much easier. some treats would be helpful.

    • @leonardjonathanoh

      Hey Roshika, weekly or biweekly is sufficient. I believe dogs do not like it being done too often because their ears are delicate and get irritated from the abrasions from ear cleaning. You may try cleaning more often, it will depend on your dog :)

    Great video... My friends got me a chocolate cocker spaniel, at the moment she's 1 month old and I'm getting ready by researching and I found your video!!! So, how often do I have to do grooming?? How often you cut its hair, have you ever done that by yourself??

    • @leonardjonathanoh
      @leonardjonathanoh  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paola Dueñas i'd say at the minimum combing daily, ear cleaning weekly, and clipping fortnightly, in-ear trimming fortnightly, underpaw trimming fortnightly, general trimming (hair cut) monthly.
      With regard to hair cuts, I've never needed to sent Arrow to the groomer for a haircut because of his naturally short coat (more like an English cocker vs. American cocker). The only areas that my family would need to trim off fur were the underpaw and the tail region (which we did about fortnightly or more). So if your dog naturally grows out long and thick coat then you may have to find other people for advice about the issues the dog may encounter with a personal groomer or the cost and frequency of the grooming sessions.
      His calmness you see isn't really a result of training, i never really used any of those dog trainer conditioning on Arrow, he just likes being handled by people who spend time with him and would be calm and trust what they do (in this case it's me grooming him), so if you don't like training your dog you can take heart because it's possible that good behaviour is in spite of discipline. I know many trainers won't like this, they say it's about discipline, but i'd say it's about spending time and never beat or scold your dog. Most of all i'd say it's their personality and the owners' treatment that determines their calmness. Hope your dog and you fit and get along and it should be great.

    My 14 y/o Cocker (mix) just snapped at his groomer :( He's even worse with me whenever I try to do anything to him. He's never liked being picked up and has bitten me (more than once) recently when I have tried (to bathe his muddy feet, was only a few inches of water). I've been getting him trimmed/groomed for probably 10+ years now. He likes the shorter cut & I get it done every 6 weeks. I don't know what I'm going to do now that she has refused to groom him again (I don't blame her) as she is afraid of causing him harm. My only option is to sedate him as I feel no other groomer, even my vet, will get him to behave. I am so worried. Your video has helped me in that I have a regular looking hair brush (made for dogs) and I think I need to get the wire kind so it can catch his fur & detangle him better. My biggest fear is how I'm going to clip his nails & do his ears. She wasn't even able to remove the cotton from his ears when I picked him up & that was a struggle to get him still long enough for me to remove them :( TG he is Blonde dog and I can see the pinks under his nails. I think I should get one of those clippers with a kind of safety guard on it so you can't clip too much (because he WILL be squirming). I am not worried about trimming his coat, as my groomer did, as much as keeping him clean and tangled free. His eyes run a lot, and he always gets stuff in his hair (on his head, muzzle and rear end). I will keep doing my research. Thanks for posting this video.

    This makes me want to cry. Cocker spaniels are my favorite breed of dogs. My mom and dad had gotten one before i was born, her name was Jessie and she was the runt, and i was born and lived with her until i turned about two or three when we had to put Jessie to sleep. She lived 12 years and in her life she was hit by a car, (she was okay though), got exema, (a skin condition), went blind, and was loved by everyone. I would love to groom dogs. I love cocker spaniels so much and i know they are hard to groom but i like brushing dogs's fur so it wouldn't be a problem for me. I liked your video. How old is your gorgeous dog?

    • @leonardjonathanoh
      @leonardjonathanoh  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      i shower him about monthly after which i do whatever i showed in the video (i.e. clipping, brushing, ear clearning). Any day in between would be generic grooming (combing, ear cleaning, trimming) when needed :)

    Thanks I really didn't know home grooming was so difficult. Wonder how the professional groomers handle the fidgety ones? Coz naturally dogs are more confortably being handled by their owners.
    Someone I know suggested they fidgit less over time, start of by rewarding and assuring them during the grooming. If the owner is unexperienced and clumsy that would make the dog panic (esp with clipping) compared to one who is calm and experienced. Practice makes perfect!

    • @leonardjonathanoh
      @leonardjonathanoh  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've seen many other comments like yours. I wonder which aspect of grooming he hates? And how does he show his disapproval?
      For Arrow, we groomed him since he was puppy, and the only thing he would do is try and creep away. In fact, in his adult years (1+) he showed he generally liked being combed or de-ticked, but didn't like clipping or ear cleaning.

    Nice video and dog is very calm...but you should clean the ears more often judging on how dark the first swipe was. You should do it at least every week. These dogs can have ear infection easliy if you don't clean them regularly.

    • @leonardjonathanoh
      @leonardjonathanoh  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      When I filmed this video, arrow was suffering an ear infection that clogged up his ears within a few days but which could only be cleaned every 2-3 days as suggested by the vet (to prevent hurting the ear). that infection cleared up in a week or two. now I try to clean it about weekly or so since its usually able to stay clean for 2 weeks :)

    • @sleb112
      @sleb112 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      10-4, Ear infection would explain it. Every time i was cleaning our dogs ears i was thinking of Arrow and though he could have an ear infection from what i could see in the vid. Keep up the good job.

    Thanx for the video, it was very useful and yes, they are the mkst adorable and yours is a very handsome one, too! If you feel like sharing your experience of cleaning: all that hair remains on the doggy so that he can lose it around, all day long and how you keep your house still proper.....i would appreciate it a lot! Thanx again!

    • @leonardjonathanoh
      @leonardjonathanoh  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Elizabet Somorjai sorry I took this long to reply, the home will never be fur-free and that is a fact, it is out of the scope of the video but it's just part of having a dog at home. Usually my room gets pretty 'furry' (visible fur lying or flying around) in a few days and a vacuum cleaner is a great friend; every few months I would have to clean out the absolute corners of my room to get rid of fur built-up over time.

    • @leonardjonathanoh
      @leonardjonathanoh  9 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      grooming your dog yourself regularly definitely helps them learn over time to relax. arrow was always skittish and could never relax around a vet, but he was when my family. it's a matter of trust. so just spend time with your dog and don't be harsh or scold them(sounds like a lack of discipline, but I never used much discipline on arrow to get him to stay still)

      stephen16948 it's true, arrow was suffering quite a bad one at the video's making, I suspect due to using one of the ear-cleaning solutions that were water-based. Oil-based seem to be better which i'm using now for him, and he hasn't had another for the past 2 years.
