Charles Sawtelle sold me my first guitar at the Denver Folklore center (R.I.P., Charles) way back when. Pete (Dr. Banjo) always amazed me and my humble Stewart-McDonald Eagle kit banjo (left-handed), Nick mostly played bass and was a consummate gentleman. Tim O'Brien has always awed me with his voice, musicianship and skill. I miss Frank, too.
@flailingerman, I agree. I saw them at Bonnaroo this year. They were better than ever, IMO. The tent was only half-filled. Few of the young people knew who they were. I met Tim O'Brien a couple years ago. A great guy.
@rockinredneck57 I agree. Hot Rize and New Grass especially were on the real edge of bluegrass. Bill Monroe liked New Grass Revival, that should be good enough for most bluegrass purists.
This is GREAT!! I remember when bluegrass DJ's would not play this. Then the likes of Doc Watson and Bill Monroe started jumping into "Newgrass" Thanks for pushing the limits. Bluegrass changed for the better. Oh yeah! You guys are pretty good!!
Just to clarify so I don't get hate mail. The phaser for the banjo, just like any effect for any instrument is good only when used sparingly. For this song it works great, for a song like Colleen Malone it wouldn't work so well. So, used in moderation, it can be a good sound, something out of the ordinary. but, used too much, it takes the novelty off of it. Especially for more traditional bluegrass. Now, for what Bela Fleck plays, it fits right in, but he uses different tones and stuff too.
@FleurDeLis06 These guys aren't your traditional bluegrass group though. They were known to push the boundaries as much as possible. That's part of what made them cool along with New Grass Revival.
@danflatpick I am not suprised at all, because it didnt sound like a banjo,if you love the natural sound of the banjo as I do,then you would hate it,its my opinion and what I like anyways.
@honeyman1964 Why should the banjo, or any instrument fo that matter, be limited to one genre of music? He is expanding the way people think about the banjo, you should be happy. Way too many folks think it's just a hillbilly instrument when they couldn't be more wrong. Any type of music can be played on a banjo, just like on a guitar. If you don't like his playing other kinds of music, that is your right, but I feel sorry for you being so narrow minded. I like bluegrass, but i like others too.
@LouGehrigsDisease No I dont blame him if he likes it and likes to play it,its his business, but I dont like it,I do like some of their stuff, just not all of it.
@rockinredneck57 look, anybody can use it in any kind of music they want to,that dont mean I will like it,And I DONT have to be happy about it,I am a hillbilly, but thats not why I like the banjo,I dont care for the clawhammer way of playing the banjo, but some do,and thats absolutely fine, see everybody has thier right to like what the like, but DONT feel sorry for me by calling me narrow minded,I have my likes and dislikes, thats MY business, understand? thats simple.
i can see where you're coming from. a lot of technology from the time sounds so dated now, though. can we fairly blame an artist for trying to be innovative? then again, maybe he shoulda known better.
@rockinredneck57 I have heard Bela Fleck,he in ok playing bluegrass banjo, but when he playes the crap he usually plays, then I absolutely hate it with a passion,if you dont like me saying that, then its just to bad, because I play banjo, and have for many years and if I dont like something, then I dont, just like you,you have the right to like and comment on what you do and dont like,SO DO I.I have expanded, but not like this junk.IIIrd Tyme Out is my kinda bluegrass, and other like that, its me.
Great old folk song and one wonderful, skilled band.

@honeyman1964 Don't tell Pete Wernick that. (Dr. Banjo) He sometimes uses one.
Charles sawtell is absokutkey amazing! No clearance white but he's awesome
@FleurDeLis06 These guys aren't your traditional bluegrass group though. They were known to push the boundaries as much as possible. That's part of what made them cool along with New Grass Revival.
@PCPrabbit Nah, that would be them other fellers, Red Knuckles and them Trailblazer guys! LOL
Hot Rise is a pretty good band!
@honeyman1964 I think you need to listen to Bela Fleck then. Why not expand the horizons of the instrument? He certainly has.
You probably can't hear that well all the way back in 50s
Of course they do !
Don't you see instruments in their hands ?
These guys were good! They deserved a better sound man.
@danflatpick I'm not..... lol

Buck Trent uses one on occasion too. This is Dr Banjo, Pete Wernick. He also uses the phaser sparingly, but effectively.

Have you listened to other songs from Hot Rize? Or are you condemning them off of one song? Be honest.
I no like phaser on banjo,
