Actually, the string is visibly broken at 1:48 and he continues to play without reaction (not much effect on a mandolin anyway) as should any professional. T.O. has always been a true professional.
I believe that one of his band mates once said your uncle had an absolutely HILARIOUS sense of humor, and he recounted a joke he'd told in a hotel room while on the road (I think that was the setting). I really wish I could recall where I read that story. I'm sure it was probably a joke he told when he had fallen ill which was even more revealing about the fortitude of your Uncle. Gosh, we ALL miss him, his humor, his inspiring musicianship, and his humanity. But he had completed his work here, and God said to him, "job well done my son. Time now, to come home back to me."
GREAT track! Great band...still performing despite loosing Charles Sawtelle to leukemia. All the arguement about what a bass costs....no comments to what a Gibson Mastertone banjo costs. These guys are pros...they need "pro-tools". How about leaving the politics aside and enjoying the music? And yes...I do play in a band and have a clue about music.
Man, I forgot how beautifully Charles Sawtelle could take a guitar break until I looked this up for nostalgia, and then went on a two-hour youtube safari. RIP. Tim O'Brien - always has been one of my deep candles.
Notice that if your'e watching this in HD at about 2:34 you'll see that one of Tim's mandolin string breaks. The stage light just reflects off of it as it breaks right at the end of the song (timer). That's why he walks off stage for probably another mandolin after their opening song. Don't you hate it when that happens? That's why I bring two mandolins with me to a show.
Try touring for hundreds and thousands of miles with a standup double bass. Try taking it on airlines. Hot Rize were a professional band that went North America wide.
If we insist on certain instruments before we can enjoy good music (the so-called bluegrass purists view), then we will miss a lot of great music. I've heard bluegrass played with just a banjo & fiddle (no bass at all) & it was still bluegrass & still great. Lighten up. This is a great band. I like acoustic guitar, nothing can beat the sound IMO. That doesn't mean I don't enjoy a great electric guitar. Doc Watson OR Stevie Ray Vaughan...it's ALL good music to me.
YUPPERS... "good stuff" indeed... except for that goofy gospel lordy goo. I followed Hot RIze way back when... and recently spoke with the good "Dr. Banjo", Pete Wernick right here in Colorado with his new group. They are most excellent as well... and the mandolin player from East TN is technically brilliant. I just took up the banjo about 1 1/2 yrs ago and doing quite well (used to play guitar in my teens n' twenties). Always like the simple but efffect "Blue Night"! Pete & I have aged!
Hot Rize has made it work for over 30 years and they are an outstanding bluegrass band, easily one of the best, Certainly you're not the only person who thinks the electric bass doesn't have a place, but someone also probably told Bill Monroe long ago that he was playing that mandolin too fast and too loud... Now aren't we glad he didn't listen?!
these guys put on the best show..great bluegrass, hot rize style and the red knuckles stuff would kill. my sides hurt from laughing with those guys. sure miss seeing them. btw, i buy every tim o'brien record that comes out..... i recommend his latest: Chameleon
these guys are great! At least you know who is playing without looking at them. Unlike other bands who can't tell who is playingn without looking at them
I had the priviledge of seeing one of their last shows in Houston, the only time I did see them, and they were awesome and are awesome players, miss them and the music...
Thanks for uploading this. I used to watch them on PBS but my old VHS tapes are getting worn . A great bluegrass band, plus the other stuff they do is good, too
Please immediately get those VHS tapes "captured" digitally and transferred to computer files before they deteriorate completely! They are probably priceless records of a historically important Bluegrass band!
I believe your words were "the bass he's playing in the video cost 1,000 dollars" Wrong Rich Boy a Fender Precision still does not cost 1,000 dollars even now And what style are you referring to ? Playing root notes ? The 5th ? the major or minor 3rd ? Your playing must be pretty pitiful
...went to see them and Del McCoury Band last Oct. at War Memorial Building in Nashville. Hot Rize did a comedy act where they all dressed up in silly costumes,...-that I can do without ! Seirra Hull opened for them,...her package is NOT for me !, although enjoyed her bassist, he played both pizzacato and arco !
Hot Rize as been doing Red Knuckles and the Trail Brailzers for 30 some years. I first saw them in 1985. It helps if you know the band and appreciate the show, both. The most of the first generation bluegrass bands had humor as part of their act!

This band was majic in its hayday. God Bless Charles Sawtelle. RIP
Thank you for posting this. Always wonderful to hear some awesome bluegrass. Rest In Peace, Uncle Charlie. We miss you.
-J. Sawtelle
What a prolific picker

Charles had a 41.or 42 d18..great guitar.sounds awesome
I miss Charles... as does all of Wyoming, Montana (not to mention Montana, Wyoming!). Bless 'em all!
Charles playing a d18 there on the stage..
They still tour with some regularity, especially at festivals, with Bryan Sutton on guitar now.
Man, I forgot how beautifully Charles Sawtelle could take a guitar break until I looked this up for nostalgia, and then went on a two-hour youtube safari. RIP. Tim O'Brien - always has been one of my deep candles.
A Gibson Mastertone Banjo cost roughly 1/3 of what a good upright bass cost
Haha when he breaks the stings then looks over like ugh ok here we go
Love that 35 D-18
My Bad. "HQ" not in "HD".

Tim was gifted with THE golden ticket for Bluegrass: The ability to sing effortlessly in the key of B without straining.
It always looks so effortless when Tim sings! What a band!

you probably go to the food bank too to make sure not too many poor people have access to the food their children might need
these guys are great! At least you know who is playing without looking at them. Unlike other bands who can't tell who is playingn without looking at them
This takes me back to North-West String Summit @ Hornings Hideout 2002 or 2003, those were strange days....
Great vocals. Great band.
Have to say though that the electric bass is really tacky. way too loud, and it's out of freakin' tune.
I had the priviledge of seeing one of their last shows in Houston, the only time I did see them, and they were awesome and are awesome players, miss them and the music...
I have lots of them on my channell im not a great player but i love bluegrass music ! So check em out!!
OMG! They are so young here! Love these guys, RIP Slade 😎
note to hatchboy: i.e. Rich Boy
most people who listen to this music are way smarter than you.
I love em but What the hell were they thinkin with an Electric Bass?????
This could only come from Colorado. Sweet, Brilliant Mountain Music.
I noticed one at 1:50, guessing he broke the 2nd string as well :(
I think tim broke a string right at the last of blue night
@Dpkll5 cHRLES WOULD HAVE TO COME BACK FROM THE DEARLY DEPARTED!
and the smoothest right hand technique the world will know!
Powerful, driving song! Tim O'Brien is one of my mandolin and singing mentors! Loved everything Hot Rize recorded! Great stuff!
Probably the smoothest and truest voice ever to grace bluegrass music... Tim O'Brien rocks!
Though Timmy was born and raised in good ole' West Virginia
I sure miss these guys, thanks for the great vid.
@Dpkll5 AMEN !!!!!!!!!!!!
si. Comment away, a worthy discussion.

Now thats some smooth guitar pickin'
I love how he doesn't skip a beat though. Class act.
It don't get any better than that.
welcome to cork ireland this week tim obrien
I dare to say; the best band in the 80's
Love it! thanks for sharing
agree.
Pete rules the banjo!
Very nice!

...what a great band,...its such a shame they use electric instead of upright bass !

love their tunes...hate their band name.
