Looking to get this game for my 7 year old son as I have heard a lot about it but never played. This review was super helpful - quick and to the point with just enough info! Thank you - we are gonna get it.
Agreed. The only reason I can think that someone would buy this over the original is that this one is cheaper, which it is by ~$10. However I would still say just buy the original as that board looks really shoddy, the original has more setup options and you can get expansions for it later if you enjoy it (which is likely).
(Before I watch the video): Catan Family Edition sounds a little redundant. I can think of few games more suitable for a family game night than classic Catan. (After I watch the video): Oh, it's Catan with less customization, and it's more resistant to the abuses of children that are too young to play. I think I would recommend this game to no one, because the rules are exactly the same, the components are more limiting, and there's no option for expansions if they should want them later.
The recently discontinuned "Simply Catan" was a far superior "beginers" version of Catan, expecially because of the awesome molded plastic bits that have the same "feel" as the plastic bits in the awesome new Catan Junior (which has a pirate theme).
I'm not against a cheap-o version of Catan for families and casual players. But $30 is not cheap enough if that is what you are going for. They need it at $20 or $25 max. Family editions of Catan can't work as a cheap gateway edition if you can get the regular version for just $10 more.
How come a white and red settlement were only ONE away from each other? They should be TWO!
Thanks for the review. Our family has played Catan Junior and we're looking to move to to this game now that our kids are a bit older.

1:13 for how to play
Thank you! The kids and I spent 40 minutes trying to figure out the directions and almost returned the game.

Who else that the board pieces are the exact same (both terrain and number wise) as the ones from Catan Traveler?
Nice Ending :D
Why don't they just fix the crappy cardboard pieces? I'd love to see this game released with super-thick card stock.
This says review not how to play!!! Talk about the differences!!!
Not usable with the awesome expansions. No Thanks!
That's all I needed to know.
this is not easy to play. this is the exact opposite of easy. anyway, great job explaining.
