I had an umbilical hernia repair almost a year ago, I have had nothing but problems since then, I cannot imagine having that surgery done during the middle ages, wow!
I've had two inguinal hernia repairs over the past 10 years. The medieval cure just curled my toes, but had to laugh at the voice-over when he quipped that it was "effective but dangerous, with the barber wildly stabbing around & hoping for the best".
As a barber , I feel completely confident in these procedures 😂. I can’t imagine a barber doing any of this. However, most still really trust their barbers today. We hear in detail the sordid lives , and intimate details of our clients. This is just mind blowing lol 😂.
I have had a few teeth removed without anything to numb my mouth. It’s actually not as bad as you think it is. It’s not as painful as the tooth ache that made me say I don’t care. Here’s a rag and pliers let’s do it. As long as the person that is pulling it doesn’t hesitate it’s over just like that. And your not in pain anymore.

Trepanning isn't actually as crazy at it sounds, today surgeons do sometimes remove skull plates to relieve swelling. Pretty sure they're usually put back in place once the swelling risk has decreased though. I'm pretty sure skull knitting is the opposite of what you'd want to do following head trauma, again because of swelling
Knowledge to perform surgery today is paved by the experimentation of the past. It isn't madness when people are willing to subject themselves to immense pain or even become permanently crippled to rid themselves of their affliction.

Those barbers kept hundreds of people alive for centuries. They were doing something right. And I don't think they were quite as rough as we would think. I'm sure they're more careful if they thought an area of the body was more dangerous to work on. They knew if you injured the guts, the person was dead. They didn't know what the guts all did, but they knew they were important.
Whilst the advent of the scientific method and better communication likely makes it far less dramatic? I’d love to see what Doctors 500 years from now think about our day to day medical and surgical procedures.
