  • This video is about Anne Askew, the Tudor woman who was illegally stretched on the rack in the Tower of London until her tendons snapped. Kevin Hicks explores who Anne Askew was, and what series of events led her to be tortured and then burned at the stake in 1546. Anne Askew was one of only two women to have been tortured at the Tower of London.

The horrendous torture of Anne Askew is unspeakable. How she stuck to her guns and would not give in is truly incredible. It's almost impossible to comprehend such courage in the face of such horror!. And she was not the only one. Many others of similar conviction were tortured in Britain but sadly their stories have been lost over the years. These unbelievably wicked acts should never be forgotten. There are very old books such as Foxe's Book Of Martyrs which contains many such accounts including the story of Anne Askew.

The reality is much darker for both sides. William of Orange literally waited for his opponents to ship all the women and children to an island for safekeeping. As soon and the Catholics were back on shore William’s men boarded boats and rowed to the island and slaughtered every infirm man, woman and child there. None were left alive. To this day it is celebrated by the Orange Order as they march.

She was a very well educated woman, and she held her own - despite horrific conditions - while being questioned directly by Stephen Gardiner (shudder) who wanted to use Anne to get to and execute Queen Katherine Parr who was a Protestant. I wrote a paper on Askew years ago, and I loved her courage and poise in her testimony. Fortunately for Katherine H8 was too ill and died too soon for Gardiner’s vile fantasies to be carried out, and young Prince Edward was a thorough Protestant and wanted none of Gardiner’s vicious Catholic persecutions of Protestants.

I have a genetic disorder called Ehlers Danslo Syndrome, basically my connective tissue doesn't function as it should. My joints are very prone to dislocating. You are absolutely spot on with your descriptions of what it would have been liked for Anne to have her tendons torn thus causing her joints to dislocate and the unbearable pain she would have been in. My joints are unstable because of the genetic defect of my tendons, ligaments and muscles which allows my joints to slide around uncontrollably. There are days that I can't function because of the pain I am in. Anne's hips and spine would have also been affected by the damage done to her tendons and ligaments as they stretched her by her wrists and ankles as they tortured her on the rack. This have been the reason the accounts described her as being in agony and in so much pain as she was jostled about on the chair she was chained to as she was carried to the stake. She was incredibly brave to not have confess under such conditions as she was tortured on the rack. Great research!!

I have a similar condition to EDS, also a connective tissue disorder, so I dislocate my joints like you. Multiple dislocations in a single limb in one hit is excruciating!! It's bad enough with one joint... any more than that is always awful. Thinking of that happening in every limb at once? Bloody terrifying. You're right, it would have been hips and spine, almost definitely ribs from the muscles being pulled out of place. I'd wager her entire pelvis would have dislocated from the SIJ, and both hips. I dislocate my SIJ, and when it's flared up really badly, sitting upright on anything is basically impossible. I can sit on a kitchen table chair and last about five minutes max before it gets too painful. If I'm in the car, every single bump sends pain shooting up my spine and down both legs. No wonder the poor lady screamed so badly at every jolt. It's likely her bones wouldn't have gone back in properly (since she would have basically been a bag of jelly afterwards) so she probably had nerve impingements and stuff too. I don't know how the human body could continue going for any length of time after being put on the rack. Death would be a mercy.

There is also the case of Margaret Clitherow a citizen of York, and a Catholic. She had heard Mass in her house and concealed Priests, an offence for which the punishment was death. When she was charged, she refused to plead, since if the matter came to trial, her family could be tortured to make them give evidence. Despite being pregnant with her fourth child, she was crushed to death beneath a door which was slowly loaded with heavy weights. It is said she lasted 15 minutes before she died. This was in 1586. In 1929 she was made a Saint, one of the Forty Martyrs of the Reformation.

That's why Giles Corey in Salem refused to enter a plea during the witch trials, if he had said guilty or not guilty his property would have been taken from him, while dying without entering a plea means his heirs keep his property
So, according to the custom of the time, he was pressed to attempt to extract a plea from him. Several days he lay under an enormous pile of weight until he died, but his family kept his property due to his refusal

The painter was French, another was Italian. When I was a young man, I would go on these trips with my grandmother. As she was moving these paintings from place to place. My grandmother would guard these paintings with her life.
There was only a select few that was allowed to see the paintings
Along With security and trust, obviously. My grandmother has since passed and these paintings remain in my custody Along with the rules of my grandmother.
I have heard alot of stories of anne & her family. My grandmother joined the Royal navy at 17. Then after that, she worked for Queen Elizabeth. 2 years before my grandmother's passing.
