The DFD autofocus works better in the GH6 and S5 which were the latest with DFD. This DFD is unreliable as it is not predictable. This DFD performance is related to:
    - Framerate, higher is better 60k
    - Color Profile. Normal profile better the V-Log
    - Window frame, APS-C is better then whole sensor on FF
    - Lenses, fastest lenses are better
    - Aperture, shallow depth of field are difficult
    - Lens type, always use Panasonic lenses as this are created for DFD
    - Focus distance
The AF settings such as sensitivity and speed are relative. If you change one of the above parameters with the same settings the AF behavior will change. So for years Lumix was promoting using settings, but this setting are relative in function of the above criteria.
One fundamental thing is that this system is very based on the sensor speed. M43 sensors are faster hence the DFD works better on m43 cameras then on FF cameras.
For stills it reads the sensor with. 480 frames per seconds, but in video this can not achieved. So only in stills is this DFD system usable, but in video not.
I think Lumix underestimated the impact of AF in video. They were aiming on entry and beginner Cinematographer who does manually focus and found later that those buying their cameras where You Tubers. Simple as that. I think that the had problems allocating processor power to enable good PDAF. It was only after they have created a new image processor with Leica for the L2 alliance that they had allocated resources for PDAF calculations.
Max Yuryev made a video some years ago comparing the AF of S5 with Sony A7 III. He noticed that Lumix is not affected when attaching an external monitor, but Sony AF was affected. This points to me that PDAF calculation or heavy so Sony chooses to not put a lot of features in their camera and allocate resources for PDAF, where Lumix put many features but leaving PDAF. At the end Sony was the one who won as he garnered a lot of TH-cam in his ecosystem.
