    We have our Sulcata and he is 11 years old. He weighs 80 lbs. Thank God he has a good attitude. I enjoy just visiting him in his outside pen. I built him a shed with all his needs. We rescued him three years ago. I'm now trying to figure out a pool or something for his baths. They really have a great personality. His name is Dexter. Been thinking of doing his own TH-cam channel.

    Thanks, this video helped a lot. I just adopted a Hermans Tortoise from my local animal shelter. He was badly taken care of and his shell is slightly deformed from mal nutrition from it's past owner. I'm trying real hard to give him a good life from now on.

    very cute, healthy tortoise! there are NO signs of pyramiding, a lot of people I see have tortoises with pyramiding. Awesome tortoise, awesome owner.

      Percylong tail I know right I rescued two hermanns tortoises with relatively bad pyramiding, but what's worse is when people judge me older tortoises' owners based off of their pyramiding. especially people new to tortoises, they think that their pyramiding just goes away.

    Nice video, Sheldon is really cool, when I get my tortoise I will get one with a funny personality. I also have a giant rabbit the size of a dog. He is trained and is very clever. I had two guinea pigs and a rabbit but the guinea pigs died of old age and my pedigree rabbit died whilst we were on holiday because my friend didn't look after him properly, I really miss him. But now I have a giant rabbit called russle.

      I'm sorry about your guinea pigs and rabbit :( Your giant rabbit sounds amazing, I would love a giant when I have a house big enough, rabbits really are very intelligent, my girls are very clever and cheeky :) I think it is important to chose a pet with a lovely personality, it makes caring for them even better :)

    She is quite a ham. I find her so entertaining just wish she was nicer lol! Have you heard of the Pepperberg studies with Alex? He was part of cognitive studies. He has been a major eye opener on parrot intelligence, almost to the point of Alex recognizing himself as an entity. Unfortunately he passed away but if you look up Pepperberg and Alex on youtube there are tons of her videos. Quite remarkable and certainly gives you a new appreciation of birds :)

      from what i see he is most likely a Western hermanns tortoise(testudo hermanni hermanni) due to his plastron markings and slight shine of the shell. For water temperature Im not sure but i would use warm water.(not cold, but not burning hot either)

  • @lucykirk6009
    @lucykirk6009 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm going to get a hermans tortoise quite soon and am halfway through building Lord Voldetorts table. What substrate do you use with Sheldon? A few friends of mine who have tortoises use hemp based stuff and have had good results, but Ive read online that sometimes it doesnt. Any answer from anyone would be greatly appreciated.

    • @BeckysAnimals
      @BeckysAnimals  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha love the name choice!! I use a top soil and play sand mix. I have a video on the topic here: th-cam.com/video/nmF4mtKWAAo/w-d-xo.html but I really wouldn't reccomend hemp bedding for tortoises, try to stay as natural as possible. Top soil is not only cheap and easy to clean but is easier to get the right humidity, they can dig scrapes to regulate their temperature and prevent fluid loss, it also allows for microclimates. I can send articles on the topic if you need further information, just let me know :)

    @nicolemorphew2254 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have an African side neck aquatic turtle and a box turtle and I give them both dechlorinated water to make the water safe for them but do you do that for tortoises too??? I just got one and gave him a bath earlier and was scared that he was supposed to have safe water

    • @Kaij-
      @Kaij- 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Nicole Morphew Tap water is fine, turtles and tortoise are worlds apart in requirements, they might look similar, but share almost nothing in common with each other. You are caring for a wild animal, dont worry about sterilizing or purifying anything, a little dirt and dust does everything a little good.

    I have a spur thighed tortoise and it's only about 10 weeks, it's shell is a little swishy. Is this normal? It's shells is nice and round and I know that's good.
    I know a squishy shells bad, I feed it dandelion leafs so it gets enough food. Is it's shell squishy because it's young?

    • @sarahpenney4881
      @sarahpenney4881 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      The shell shouldn't be squishy. Just feeding it Dandelion leaves isn't enough to get the proper nutrients. They need a varied natural diet.

    What type of tortoise is Shelly?

  • @Suilimani
    @Suilimani 10 ปีที่แล้ว

    Do tortoises need their nails clipped? I recently got a tortoise from my cousin who left the military and couldn't take Roxie with her I'm really new at caring for a tortoise. Her nails are really long and not sure if that is normal or if they need clipping from time to time.

    • @BeckysAnimals
      @BeckysAnimals  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I personally don't cut my tortoises nails, I provide rocks and slate in her enclosure to wear them down, I also let her wander around on my patio to scratch them down. Everything I have read has advised against cutting them but if they are really long, I don't know. Have a look on a tortoise forum such as tortoiseforum.org or tortoisetrustforum.org, you could post a photo of her and see what other's recommend. :)

    I completely agree. Did you know that a rabbit has a larger brain than a cat? Just found that out recently and it astounded me as so many people house cats as pets but tend to neglect (or even eat) rabbits. There was another woman who did cognitive training - she'd trained a goldfish to swim through hoops! Fascinating that many cast off as being stupid / having a 3 sec. memory etc. could be trained! Just because animals dont communicate the same way as us in no way makes them less intelligent :)

    • @BeckysAnimals
      @BeckysAnimals  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      lois worrall Have a look into the different requirements of the different species and see which would be best for you, they are all very different, have different needs in terms of housing, diet, humidity, some grow to be very large, some are herbivores, others are omnivores. You need to be certain that they are the right pet for you because they can live 100 years and they have very complex care requirements, please do lots of research before you get one to prevent things like this: th-cam.com/video/v2YLQYr3MX8/w-d-xo.html

    Sheldon has a beautiful shell sorry if I spelt it wrong but great video, I was wondering how big do Russian tortoises get cause I just got with a 5 foot vivarium tell me if thats enough for a russian tortoise and btw vivariums are ok for tortoises!

    • @BeckysAnimals
      @BeckysAnimals  10 ปีที่แล้ว

      You didn't spell it wrong :) I wouldn't really recommend a vivarium, they don't provide very good air circulation which can lead to respiratory issues. Tortoise tables are a better option, I talk about that more in this video: Setting Up A Mediterranean Tortoise Enclosure
      I think Russian tortoises usually reach about 8-10 inches but it depends, females will also usually get slightly bigger than males :)
