Thank you for such detailed and concise videos. I'm only in the early research phase on my way to possibly caring for India Star tortoises. I've never seen a specimen so active. Is that normal? Hiya, sorry for the late reply! Good question! Sheldon was particularly active on this occasion, we had just cleaned out her enclosure so she had to go around stomping on everything haha. I have a Horsfield tortoise and was wondering what brand of top soil is suitable? I am planning on mixing it with coco coir but I am scared I am going to get the wrong soil :/
Hi im buying a horsefield at 8months old and i wanted to go with sterilized topsoil but im been told i shud use something called repter turf until its 18month old of fear of ingesting the soil
This was really useful thanks!...I've just adopted my parents hermann tortoise and am working on improving the environment. He currently has a bark substrate ... Would you still recommend giving the 30:70 top soil to sand a go? I was also wondering about protecting the wooden base of housing and found something called a sand mat... could I use that under the soil/sand substrate... would there be any reason not to? Finally, what is your opinion on the back to nature bedding? Is that something I could use?
I would definitely still recommend top soil, adding the sand is up to you. It is debated that sand can cause eye irritation but some people say it helps to get the humidity right. I am currently only using top soil which seems to work well, you need to mist it quite frequently to prevent it from becoming too dry and dusty and I'd recommend a hygrometer to test humidity. A lot of people use bin bags or plastic lining to protect the base of the table. Is the back to nature one that paper pellet bedding? If so it would definitely be dehydrating to a tortoise. Top soil is the most natural bedding :)
I still have lots of Eco earth and coco soft. Do you think I can mix small amounts into their substrate until it is gone or do you recommend against it?? Thank you so much :3.
Hi Becky :) I hope my message finds you well! Your videos are so helpful! I've been wanting to use topsoil as a substrate for a while but I don't know which brand has the least chemicals and is the safest to use. What brand of topsoil would you recommend as the safest? I look forward to hearing from you Many Thanks & Kindest Regards Sam X
I have a Herman tortoise and I was told to have wood chip but I heard it's bad he also has a smallish enclosure can u please give me some advice on the size I will need and what substance should I use for the enclosure ?xxx
This video explains about the recommended bedding which is a mixture of top soil and sand. This one also talks about the enclosure: th-cam.com/video/eoEUg1s9WD0/w-d-xo.html&lc=z12bvd241sfpitvgr04cft54eknxi1ximu40k
Hiya, you may have to play around adjusting the mixture depending on the humidity in your house. I have a humidity meter so I can make sure it is right for her (mine is also a hermanns). I don't use much sand as there are reports of it irritating their eyes and if it is ingested it can cause a blockage so I use a feeding slate to reduce this risk. Just plain garden soil, I buy it in bags from my garden centre, it's just called top soil, it needs to be soil without any additives such as fertilizers or pesticides. :)
I have a red footed tortoise and I use a coconut substrate and tropical I think or forest oh and I was wondering were did u get your cage right now I am using a glass reptile but I researched that tortoises don't like to be looked at and I have a wood block and plant in his pen but they take up to much space can u give me some advice :)
Also, what about sphagnum peat moss? I use it a lot in my garden and it is light and airy 🤔 (I’m getting a 5-7 year old Russian tortoise and getting everything ready for her indoor and outdoor habitats.)
From what I’ve read about peat moss, it doesn’t seem to be toxic and some people mix it into top soil to get the right humidity levels in their tables but because it is so fine, it may cause respiratory issues if used alone and apparently dries out very quickly under heat lamps and when it gets dry it can irritate eyes and airways.
I use Eco earth from bricks that I put in a bucket and let the bricks obsorbe water and then dry out so it doesn't get moldy for my red foot tortoise should I use a different bedding is Eco earth bad for her?
+CuteCavies That's ok. You could look for sterilised top soil in your local garden centre or Amazon does Westland 35L sterilised top soil for £10.99 free delivery. I'm sure u can find it, or something similar on there. You could also buy moss.
What is the little enclosure that you started her out in, and how much did it cost? I live in america, and i know you got a costum built one for sheldon! Would you be willing to sell your last one? If not it is alright. Thnx!!!!
Which species of tortoise do you have? I wouldn't really recommend any. Like i explain in this video, the only substrate I really recommend is a sand/soil mix tailored to the species you own and their natural habitat.
Captive bred in the UK is MUCH better, Sheldon was sold as such but it wasn't until we looked at her paperwork in further detail that we found out :( Awwww!! A baby!! Sheldon is 8 years old now
I have a question : are these substrates god for snakes too? I'm getting a snake in the spring or summer, any suggestions of which snakes are best for beginners?
I don't have a clue I'm afraid, I have never owned a snake and they are going to have very different care needs to tortoises, I would recommend looking on a reptile forum, they are great places to gather information when you are looking to bring home a new animal :)
I have never owned a sulcata so I would advise doing some research and checking out forums and Facebook groups to see what other sulcata owners are using. A lot that I have happened to come across are also using topsoil, some are on eco earth or orchid bark but I wouldn’t like to say which is best for that species as I’d need to do more research.
Top soil comes from the top layer of the ground. It should just be soil so should not contain any fertilisers or chemicals like some of the other soil options available from shops. Garden soil may be a different mix to top soil, I believe garden soil contains manure too but it probably depends a bit on the brand. What else did it say on the pack?
It's not a recommend bedding, I explain why in this video. Problems can develop over many years so even if they are okay now, they could develop issues later in life. It's better to have a suitable bedding because with the right care, they can live for 100 years. Top soil is much more natural for them, cheap and low maintenance, have a look on the tortoise trust for more information :)
Super interesting video. I know nothing about tortoises so this was great :) It's amazing how much pet stores sell that just isn't suitable for the animals they sell it for.
I couldn't agree more, I don't know how they get away with a lot of it in this day and age, animal care was very different 10 years ago but we have so much information readily available these days . It's shocking really, especially when it comes to small animal treats and housing x
No , cypress mulch is a good alternative. Avoid repti bark (it molds when wet) & causes splinters. Repti soil for a tortoise who needs higher humidity or organic top soil with no pesticides.
I'm always so overjoyed when I see you've done a video! I know you have been busy, so completely understand! But it's so great to see one pop up! This was such a thorough and informative video! Great seeing Sheldon! :) Lots of hugs to you and the family!!!
Jessica Sweetland yes, if you watch till the end I recommend a soil mix. If he has trouble with his eyes you might need to leave out the sand as it has been linked to eye irritation. So maybe just top soil.
Toby the Tortoise no you can’t just have sand cause it does cause a irritation on the eyes but if u mix top soil and a bit of play sand abou half and half it’s fine to use 😁
The Assassin Plays what type of tortoise do you have? I have what I think is a sulcata, we feed him romaine lettuce, avacodo, tangerine sacks (little long sacks of juice inside a peeled tangerine piece) a mashed banana which mine loves. But I'd prefer romaine as a main feeding option. avacodo, tangerine, and banana is like a little treat of the week.
I didn't get much from this video. Can someone tell me an exact substrate for an Eastern Hermann tortoise. I'm getting a baby one this summer and want to know exactly the one to get for the Eastern Hermann Tortoise
I have an Eastern Hermanns so the substrate would be roughly the same as mine and what I spoke about in the video. Like I explained, the amount of sand is debated because some people have reported it to cause eye irritation so many people alter it to suit their tortoise, if it gets too humid etc. There isn't an exact answer, you need to alter it so it is right for your setup and your tortoise. A 50/50 mix is a good start and then see what works and what keeps the right humidity for your tortoise.
Hiya, yes :) A greek tortoise is one of the mediterranean species. You may want to play with the quantities to get the right humidity though and some people have said that sand has caused eye irritation so you could use less sand if the humidity is okay. Hope this helps :)
Yes, they can survive with poor substrates but it can cause problems later down the line and newspaper doesn't allow for normal tortoise behaviours like digging. They can dig to regulate their temperature and fluid loss, without the ability to do this it can lead to dehydration which can lead to a whole load of other issues like renal damage. It's just better for them to try and keep it to what they would have naturally and what they have adapted to survive in.
Red-foots are a tropical species so will need more humid environment than my tortoise, the tortoise protection group have an article on red foots here: www.tortoise-protection-group.org.uk/site/files/Redfoot%20care%20sheet%20May%202008.pdf which says 'For basic substrates it is best to replicate as near a natural form as possible. For example, a variety of forest barks can often be seen available on the market; but avoid any that are pine based (as the resin that is present can cause severe skin irritation) and also beech chips (which can produce huge amounts of fungal spores that can cause respiratory problems). Topsoil is also good, and combined with forest bark it makes a good floor medium, which also helps to hold a humidity level far easier than just bark itself. Hides should be given in several areas, and bark arches are always a favourite. N.B. Hemp has sharp particles which can easily cause serious damage to tortoises and it can sometimes prove to be fatal especially if ingested and as such is not recommended for use as a substrate.'
hi, i know this is an old video but i hope you’ll reply. i’m 16 and rescuing a tortoise from my mums friend who can’t be bothered to care for him anymore. i’m worried because i don’t know if they even know/remember what type of tortoise he is, i think i’m getting him today so i will obviously ask then but i’m just curious as to what i do if they don’t even know? the whole situation is quite shit honestly, we’ve “baby sat” him a few times a year ago and i thought they were giving him the proper care because he seemed healthy so i didn’t bother doing my own research. come to find out his viv isn’t the correct size, i don’t think he’s got a uva/uvb bulb (can’t remember if he had one when we looked after him, we live in the uk so he can’t be in the garden all day because shit weather) and he’s being kept on repti carpet. i’m going to order a new viv and other requirements online once i have the money but i’m worried that he might get stressed if i put him in such a different environment. what can i do? :(
Hi, first off thank you forgetting him out of that rubbish situation. I would wait until you find out what species he is before spending money on his set-up because different species may need different housing. For example, mediterranean species need a tortoise table rather than a viv. If he is and money is an issue, I would look into building one yourself. I have a video on my DIY one here: th-cam.com/video/oRPDLC2B4Lk/w-d-xo.html It's basically a big wooden box so not too complicated. You can also make a simple one out of a bookcase. You can take out the shelves and flip it on it's back. Anyway, UV and heat is obviously essential for torts, I live in the UK too and can send you a link to the bulb I use if you like. Getting that set up is a priority for preventing horrible health issues. Do you have a picture of him? I would post it to a tortoise forum or facebook page and people will help you to ID him and advise on his care. Shelled warriors is a good forum. The tortoise trust is an amazing website for tortoise care guides for loads of species, the tortoise table website is awesome for feeding advice. On Facebook I use groups like 'shelled warriors', 'tortoise plant addicts' for feed advice, and then specific hermann tortoise groups. I would just pick one that looks knowledgeable and ask for help. I always have to double check advice though as there is a lot of outdated info out there. If he turns out to be one of the mediterranean species (which are most common as pets in the UK) check out my tortoise playlist for diet, housing advice ect. Let me know if you have any questions, I know it's daunting but you are doing the right thing x
TheSmallPetShop hi, thankyou for the reply! unfortunately we didn’t end up getting him today as her kids are really angry/upset about me getting him (🙄) but she’s dropping him off sometime in the next week, if she doesn’t i’ll definitely find a way to get him myself. i don’t have any photos but from what i can remember he definitely looks like a hermanns tortoise, i’ll join the groups now and as soon as i can get my hands on him i’ll post a photo. i have a question about tortoise tables actually, i’ve been looking into them more as they definitely seem more suitable but i’ve read that it’s not ideal to have them in a room that’s cold, my parents aren’t fond of reptiles so he’d be in my room which is always chilly no matter what. i can’t remember exactly what the article said but it was something about the air temp?? in that scenario would it be okay for me to have him in a vivarium? i have a lot of spare UV bulbs i can use for him when he’s here until I can order things for him, thankyou so much, i’ll keep you updated on what happens x
If you think he’s a Hermann I would start by reading the basic care guide on here: www.tortoisetrust.org/care/care.html it gives a good basic overview of most areas of their care including housing and heating/lighting. I still wouldn’t recommend a Viv. The lack of air flow has been said to cause runny nose syndrome and torts can struggle with the lack of temperature variation which they need to regulate their temperature. I would instead use a space heater or something to bring up the background temperature in your room. I always find that difficult too and have to heat my house specially for Sheldon 🤦♀️
I haven't done much research into Star tortoises, they have different care needs to the mediterranean species which I am more familiar with. The Tortoise Trust is a good place to start: www.tortoisetrust.org/care/care.html although they also have more info on the med species too as these are more commonly kept as pets and this looks like a good article: startortoises.net/substrates.html Most articles seem to suggest a soil mix, this could be with sand (some people don't use sand because of this risk of eye irritation or impaction (I use a feeding slate to reduce the risk of Sheldon ingesting substrate)) or a mix of soil and coconut coir. It has to be a dry enough substrate to prevent shell rot but not so dry it is really dusty. It's a hard balance to get right. I have temperature and humidity meters to check it is right for the species of tortoise I own. If you use soil, check it doesn't contain any fertilizers, pesticides or bugs :) It might be worth doing some research or asking in tortoise forums as I am not an expert x
does your tortoise live inside if h does I have been told that tortoises don't hibernate if not living outside may be wrong but this is what I have heard
Sheldon lives inside and hibernates, if they live inside you have to artificially wind them down because they may not naturally start the process because the temperature is steady, unlike when they are outside and the seasons change, I will go in depth about it when I make the hibernation series. It also depends on the species, some tortoises don't hibernate x
Certain species of tortoise hibernate, the length of hibernation depends on the age of the tortoise, I will be doing some videos on hibernation soon :)
They wouldn't be able to dig scrapes to regulate their temperature and prevent fluid loss so it wouldn't be a good substrate. It also wouldn't provide any microclimates and I don't know what the humidity would be like, I personally wouldn't recommend it x
I used this for a while then took my tortoise to the vet for a check up and he wasn't himself. Ended up having an x-Ray for him and found out he had an impaction which showed lots of stones which is in the soil. It was very expensive. Just use sterilised top soil. You can get it from wickes. There are no bits in it.
Yes...I have always used water straight from the sink or water hose outside, Just when doing so make sure the temperature is right for your turtle/tortoise, You want it to be lukewarm Not to cold or hot. Anyways hope that helps!!
My friend had a tortoise that was in a enclosure that had some type of sand as a substrate, he ended up ingesting it and passed away. Edit: I forgot to ask does a topsoil and play sand also allow plants to grow, all plants I want to grow are tortoise friendly.
Tortoise information out there is so complicated and often contradicts itself. The most popular substrates at the moment seem to be top soil and coir and both seem to be safe but may work better for different people depending on their circumstances. Top soil is my favourite as I believe it to be the most natural, is safe and is also very reasonably priced but coir seems to be deemed to be safe too so you could use either. Forums and Facebook pages for tortoise owners may give you some ideas and tips if you need help choosing.
Sand isn't always recommended based on the research I've done. It can cause eye irritation and can't pass through safely if accidently ingested. Soil mixed with coco coir is the one recommended by most but as with all things in life... each to their own. There's a lot of different opinions and some use the "bad" substrates very successfully with no issues. You have to do your own research and make your own decision. However, top soil is generally the one recommended by everyone and can be mixed with one or two other substrates, if you wish to do so.
I agree, top soil seems to be the one substrate recommended by everyone. You are right, sand is quite debated in the community due to reports of eye irritation and impaction but it can help to get the right humidity when used with top soil too. It can be tricky to get it right and advice is changing slightly all the time, I just hope this video helps to steer people away from totally inappropriate things like newspaper and prompts people to do their own research from reputable sites 😊
@@BeckysAnimals great video and it helped me a lot when getting my tort. I just wanted to mention a concern I've read a few times regarding sand... but I certainly don't want to tell people what they should be doing. Do plenty of research and then decide :) I'm sure all tortoises are different too and have their preference! Thanks Becky
Thank you, I would love to be able to post more videos but unfortunately I have to put work first because it pays the bills and feeds the pets haha. Hopefully I will be able to film more in the summertime when the days are longer :) \m/
Do u wet the sand first. Dust is everywhere. Someone else had to do it for me while I was away and I usually wet it and then mix (I know now it’s bad but the coconut mixture 50/50 and I just add that in then to that that’s wet (not drenched). Do u recommend this? Thank you so much for this video. I did see it. Before and I couldn’t remember who said what website to trust. Now I found u again! And I’m doubting EVERYTHING I’m doing. Smh.
I never do that to my tortoise to pampered like a baby I have 2 Mediterranean tortoise & its 5 years now i just let my tortoise to walking around to my backyard & tossing food like spinach & some green veg & if night come i put inside regular cage. its recommended to live like their natural habitat.
would you have any idea if roasted cocoa shell bedding would be safe for my baby tortoise. www.nationalcocoashell.com/index2.php this is the website and they want to know also. No one has ever asked them this question.

great video can you do a hibernation video as we are getting a tortoise today and we are trying to get a hermann
I'm hoping to get a series up soon :)
And the substrate I use is a coconut and wood chip mix
me too
Easiest and most effective keep it moist
Hi, what mixture ration would you recommend for Hermann's? And when you say top soil, are we talking potting soil? Would garden multch work?
Hiya, you may have to play around adjusting the mixture depending on the humidity in your house. I have a humidity meter so I can make sure it is right for her (mine is also a hermanns). I don't use much sand as there are reports of it irritating their eyes and if it is ingested it can cause a blockage so I use a feeding slate to reduce this risk. Just plain garden soil, I buy it in bags from my garden centre, it's just called top soil, it needs to be soil without any additives such as fertilizers or pesticides. :)
Is tortoise terrain from pets at home good for horsefield tortoises?
I also have a red heat lamp that I rely on but I want to change that but I don't know what to ! Suggestion??
What substrate can you suggest for my three toed box turtle?
I have a red footed tortoise and I use a coconut substrate and tropical I think or forest oh and I was wondering were did u get your cage right now I am using a glass reptile but I researched that tortoises don't like to be looked at and I have a wood block and plant in his pen but they take up to much space can u give me some advice :)
It's better to use sterilised top soil.
The bricks of Eco earth*
My tortoise is a forest species
For redfoots use humid hides with moss in from your garden. Use sterilised top soil. You can get it from wickes.
+HayleyHearts〈3 I don't have that store and also don't have moss in my yard anywhere
+CuteCavies That's ok. You could look for sterilised top soil in your local garden centre or Amazon does Westland 35L sterilised top soil for £10.99 free delivery. I'm sure u can find it, or something similar on there. You could also buy moss.
Thank you for all the great information about substrates 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
What’s the cleanest bedding?
What is the little enclosure that you started her out in, and how much did it cost? I live in america, and i know you got a costum built one for sheldon! Would you be willing to sell your last one? If not it is alright. Thnx!!!!
Which one of thease should I use? Clay, Odor Eliminating, or Eco carpet?
Which species of tortoise do you have? I wouldn't really recommend any. Like i explain in this video, the only substrate I really recommend is a sand/soil mix tailored to the species you own and their natural habitat.
What brand of sand do you recommend
Maybe Exoterra Sand...
What sub species of hermann is that as im trying to work out what mine is and yours looks just like mine.
Eastern (Testudo hermanni boettgeri) I believe. She's captive bred but her paperwork lists her country of origin as Macedonia.
Mines captive bread in the UK. 8 months old
I was thinking if i could give carrots as i see some people say yes some, some say no.
Captive bred in the UK is MUCH better, Sheldon was sold as such but it wasn't until we looked at her paperwork in further detail that we found out :(
Awwww!! A baby!! Sheldon is 8 years old now
Generally vegetables aren't the healthiest, I explain more about it in my diet video: th-cam.com/video/tcdBx2BeQEE/w-d-xo.html :)
A tortoise video! Yayyyyy :D
Doing research on people who know a lot about snakes is best from what I know you can use fine shredded aspen it depends on the snake of course
I have a sulcate tortoise. I need bedding now. What is the best one?
I have never owned a sulcata so I would advise doing some research and checking out forums and Facebook groups to see what other sulcata owners are using. A lot that I have happened to come across are also using topsoil, some are on eco earth or orchid bark but I wouldn’t like to say which is best for that species as I’d need to do more research.
can I just use top soil or do I have to use sand aswell
What is top soil ? I mean i bought garden soil or smth it was black... made the tortoise very dirty ... is that it
Top soil comes from the top layer of the ground. It should just be soil so should not contain any fertilisers or chemicals like some of the other soil options available from shops. Garden soil may be a different mix to top soil, I believe garden soil contains manure too but it probably depends a bit on the brand. What else did it say on the pack?
+TheSmallPetShop my tortoises bedding is wood Chipping's. Me and my friends have the same thing and out tortoises are fine. Is this ok?
It's not a recommend bedding, I explain why in this video. Problems can develop over many years so even if they are okay now, they could develop issues later in life. It's better to have a suitable bedding because with the right care, they can live for 100 years. Top soil is much more natural for them, cheap and low maintenance, have a look on the tortoise trust for more information :)
+TheSmallPetShop Ok thank you. I will be looking for the bedding you have in your tortoise home:)
I have a spur-thighed tortoise. Will the information you give apply to my type of tortoise.
Yes, your tortoise is also one of the mediterranean species so many aspects of their care will be similar.
What bq substrate please
Super interesting video. I know nothing about tortoises so this was great :) It's amazing how much pet stores sell that just isn't suitable for the animals they sell it for.
I couldn't agree more, I don't know how they get away with a lot of it in this day and age, animal care was very different 10 years ago but we have so much information readily available these days . It's shocking really, especially when it comes to small animal treats and housing x
What do I use for a California desert tortoise? HELP 😩
How big will shelldon grow?
Can I use eco earth for hermens tortoises??
Is Aspen a good bedding?
No , cypress mulch is a good alternative. Avoid repti bark (it molds when wet) & causes splinters. Repti soil for a tortoise who needs higher humidity or organic top soil with no pesticides.
I'm always so overjoyed when I see you've done a video! I know you have been busy, so completely understand! But it's so great to see one pop up! This was such a thorough and informative video! Great seeing Sheldon! :) Lots of hugs to you and the family!!!
thanks sis for the video very fruitful information
Do u know what other bedding I can get do him? X I'm very worried about him
Jessica Sweetland yes, if you watch till the end I recommend a soil mix. If he has trouble with his eyes you might need to leave out the sand as it has been linked to eye irritation. So maybe just top soil.
TheSmallPetShop ok thank you sooo much x
You're welcome :)
I didn't watch the vid yet, i have a question.
Is sand okay?
Toby the Tortoise no you can’t just have sand cause it does cause a irritation on the eyes but if u mix top soil and a bit of play sand abou half and half it’s fine to use 😁
Also what should I feed him! I'm feeding him weeds at the moment but I'm not sure if that heathy! Suggestion??
Is a 50/50 mix of top soil and children's play sand good for the eastern Hermann tortoise
For Greek tortoises can I use a 50/50 sand and soil mix?
Hiya, yes :) A greek tortoise is one of the mediterranean species. You may want to play with the quantities to get the right humidity though and some people have said that sand has caused eye irritation so you could use less sand if the humidity is okay. Hope this helps :)
@@BeckysAnimals
can I use the reptile carpet??? for my Greek tortoise???
@@BeckysAnimals or it's not good for her ??
Does topsoil cause flies?
Not that I’ve seen 😊
Thank you
I have used newspaper for five years and my tortoise is alive
Yes, they can survive with poor substrates but it can cause problems later down the line and newspaper doesn't allow for normal tortoise behaviours like digging. They can dig to regulate their temperature and fluid loss, without the ability to do this it can lead to dehydration which can lead to a whole load of other issues like renal damage. It's just better for them to try and keep it to what they would have naturally and what they have adapted to survive in.
I have a baby Russian tortoise what ground should I use I have calcium sand but he can’t burrow into it anyone know what kind I should use?
Russian tortoises have similar care requirements to Hermanns so can also have top soil or a top soil and play sand mix
Do I have to get sterilised top soil
What substrate do you used x
Is zoo med forest floor good for redfoot tortoise?
Red-foots are a tropical species so will need more humid environment than my tortoise, the tortoise protection group have an article on red foots here: www.tortoise-protection-group.org.uk/site/files/Redfoot%20care%20sheet%20May%202008.pdf
which says 'For basic substrates it is best to replicate as near a natural form as
possible. For example, a variety of forest barks can often be seen available on the
market; but avoid any that are pine based (as the resin that is present can cause severe
skin irritation) and also beech chips (which can produce huge amounts of fungal spores
that can cause respiratory problems). Topsoil is also good, and combined with forest
bark it makes a good floor medium, which also helps to hold a humidity level far easier
than just bark itself. Hides should be given in several areas, and bark arches are always
a favourite.
N.B. Hemp has sharp particles which can easily cause serious damage to
tortoises and it can sometimes prove to be fatal especially if ingested and as such
is not recommended for use as a substrate.'
hi, i know this is an old video but i hope you’ll reply. i’m 16 and rescuing a tortoise from my mums friend who can’t be bothered to care for him anymore. i’m worried because i don’t know if they even know/remember what type of tortoise he is, i think i’m getting him today so i will obviously ask then but i’m just curious as to what i do if they don’t even know? the whole situation is quite shit honestly, we’ve “baby sat” him a few times a year ago and i thought they were giving him the proper care because he seemed healthy so i didn’t bother doing my own research. come to find out his viv isn’t the correct size, i don’t think he’s got a uva/uvb bulb (can’t remember if he had one when we looked after him, we live in the uk so he can’t be in the garden all day because shit weather) and he’s being kept on repti carpet. i’m going to order a new viv and other requirements online once i have the money but i’m worried that he might get stressed if i put him in such a different environment. what can i do? :(
Hi, first off thank you forgetting him out of that rubbish situation.
What the substrate for baby star tortoise please answer me,
I haven't done much research into Star tortoises, they have different care needs to the mediterranean species which I am more familiar with. The Tortoise Trust is a good place to start: www.tortoisetrust.org/care/care.html although they also have more info on the med species too as these are more commonly kept as pets and this looks like a good article: startortoises.net/substrates.html
Most articles seem to suggest a soil mix, this could be with sand (some people don't use sand because of this risk of eye irritation or impaction (I use a feeding slate to reduce the risk of Sheldon ingesting substrate)) or a mix of soil and coconut coir. It has to be a dry enough substrate to prevent shell rot but not so dry it is really dusty. It's a hard balance to get right. I have temperature and humidity meters to check it is right for the species of tortoise I own.
If you use soil, check it doesn't contain any fertilizers, pesticides or bugs :)
It might be worth doing some research or asking in tortoise forums as I am not an expert x
does your tortoise live inside if h does I have been told that tortoises don't hibernate if not living outside may be wrong but this is what I have heard
+TheSmallPetShop Do turtles need to hibernate and if so how long does it last?
Certain species of tortoise hibernate, the length of hibernation depends on the age of the tortoise, I will be doing some videos on hibernation soon :)
TheSmallPetShop hi I saw a top soil sand mix in pets at home should I get it?
Michael Eley if u live in scotland could you keep the tortoise out side or keep them in side
what substrate would you reccomend for russian tortoises
I C they are Mediterranean species so have care requirements similar to Sheldon who is a Hermanns. I would use soil or a soil and sand mix :)
I would also use a feeding slate to reduce the risk of them ingesting substrate stuck to their food.
will u do a guniea pig vid
would a fake grass carpet work for a tortoise?
They wouldn't be able to dig scrapes to regulate their temperature and prevent fluid loss so it wouldn't be a good substrate. It also wouldn't provide any microclimates and I don't know what the humidity would be like, I personally wouldn't recommend it x
TheSmallPetShop well he does have 1/3 of his large tank filled with fluff so he burrow himself
The tortoise might try to eat it
Dont know too much about exotics and probably will never own any but was really interesting thanks
can I do any of these for box turtles
Is tortoise life substrate ok?
I used this for a while then took my tortoise to the vet for a check up and he wasn't himself. Ended up having an x-Ray for him and found out he had an impaction which showed lots of stones which is in the soil. It was very expensive. Just use sterilised top soil. You can get it from wickes. There are no bits in it.
+HayleyHearts〈3 it was also very dusty and didn't retain any moisture..
And what substrate do you use I would love to try it :)
Play sand is full of chemicals
Can you give em just tap water?
Yes...I have always used water straight from the sink or water hose outside, Just when doing so make sure the temperature is right for your turtle/tortoise, You want it to be lukewarm Not to cold or hot. Anyways hope that helps!!
Kala Spears thanks
Try to use distilled
My friend had a tortoise that was in a enclosure that had some type of sand as a substrate, he ended up ingesting it and passed away.
Edit: I forgot to ask does a topsoil and play sand also allow plants to grow, all plants I want to grow are tortoise friendly.
What type of top soil do you use? I adopted baby Sulcata tortoise and I have no idea what to do.
I was recommended coco coir...but you said it could become moldy...but soil can become moldy too...so confusing all the conflicting info
Good info keep up the good work .
Awesome video! Very informative!
You make really useful videos,it's too bad that you post them rarely...
Metallica
Thank you, I would love to be able to post more videos but unfortunately I have to put work first because it pays the bills and feeds the pets haha. Hopefully I will be able to film more in the summertime when the days are longer :) \m/
+TheSmallPetShop I'm looking forward to Shelgon waking up from hibernation, however my western hermann didn't hibernate this winter. He just got fat...
+TheSmallPetShop Oh,I'm sorry, I meant Sheldon,Shelgon is a Pokémon.
Could I just use top soil
Jack Turner11
Just make sure it's organic and additive free
nice video!
Thank you 😊
Do u wet the sand first.
Thank you for this video it helped a lot
