I think the Walt’s worm is the epitome of necessity is the mother of all inventions. It was solely created for weight but it is now one of the most consistent flies ever tied.
I've found it's easiest to use a bobbin to load up the lead free wire (a cheap one preferably) and take wraps with the bobbin. It makes it much easier to pack in the last wire wraps without any waste because the weight of the bobbin sort of stabilizes the wire.
I'm not saying there isn't an intrinsic imitative value of this pattern...but I've always wondered if the ace up the sleeve for this fly is that the tier hasn't made a big time investment and therefore as a fisher is more willing to put the fly in harms way at the bottom where the fish are.
Excellent point Adam and I think you are right on the money. Just like real estate, it's most often location, location, location- getting the fly to where the fish are. For me anyway, the jig style is what really sets the pattern apart because it's less prone to hang-ups.
+anthony0803 Sure, I use it all the time see: th-cam.com/video/wFhMzbWAao4/w-d-xo.html On larger sizes I do like the dubbing because of the added spikey hairs sticking out that look like legs and suggest motion.
Just wanted to ask since I’m a new, fairly financially limited fly-tier, is the jighead absolutely necessary for this pattern? Can i use a normal nymph hook for this so as to save money by using what I have? Or will that change the orientation of the jighead or make the presentation undesirable to trout?
Regular hooks and beads are just fine. Or even skip the bead altogether and use wraps of lead free wire beneath the dubbing. Jig hooks, because they ride hook point up tend to get snagged on the bottom less often, but they are indeed more expensive, particularly when paired with a slotted tungsten bead.
tightlinevideo thank you iam 13 and have watched your videos for the past 3 years you got me into fly tying more then any fly tying instructor like jim minsiri, intheriffle, and more. thank you so much for replying to my question i appreciate it so much

I am really enjoying this recent series of flies drawn from the competition circuit. Very simple, slender, beautiful ties.
I like your method of starting wrapping the wire.

I wrap these with copper wraps and use aa a scud pattern. Very helpful stuff Tim
Love it, clear explanation, thanks guys for posting this.
Very nicely done!!!
I’ve never had much luck with this. Probably need to fish it more

Great video (as are all of your videos). Is there an alternative to using the Sulky Sliver Metallic Thread?
Can' get much simpler ;;yet looks so effective; Thanks Earlt
Great pattern! Can't wait for the next video
Adding goose biots as a tail dress this up quite a bit too.
Ha! Loren was a classmate of mine in nursing school! Only found out he fly fished years later!
Subscribed! Friggin great video.
Great video as usual. What can we use to replace the opalescent sulky sliver metallic thread?
+MrSlybin Really thin Flashabou is about as close as you can get.
What would be some color variations you could suggest?
I really like more the second version.
Would Hare-Tron dubbing be similar to what youre using here?
great video as always. i'm looking for that Jamieson's Shetland Spindrift yard. Also, where do i come across the sulky line of materials?
I got my Jamison Spindrift in Oyster color and my Sulky tinsels in Joanns Yarn Shop
What is that tool he uses to nip the thread? .? anyone know?
Do you think this fly would be just as effective if killer bug yarn was used in place of dubbing?

Would it even be worth to tie this on just a regular hook and bead
Absolutely.
Ok
Did anyone else notice the change in music when moving onto "Sexy Walt"? lol
where did you get the clear antron for dubbing, any info would be great ,kudos on vid Thanks Mark
It is a Wapsi product that I use. Fly-Rite also makes it.
Antron dubbing?
Where can I find hackle pliers like those?
Google or find on amazon "plunger style hackle pliers "
Radio Shack
whats your most productive fly
Antron Egg catches the most fish. Pine Squirrel streamer catches the largest.
thank you so much i am 13 and your videos help me the most in the past 3 years to tie flies i love watching your micro phesant tail

***** Or is a Beadhead Gold-Ribbed Hare's Ear actually a Walt's Worm with the addition of a tail, a wing case and a gold rib?
Yes, it will work where I live as well!
