    I think it's a great starter camera, I bought mine about a year ago and I absolutely love it, it leaves a lot to be desired for sure but that's kind of the point, if I didn't want to dive deeper into photography I wouldn't have broken the bank to find that out, now that I know I want to pursue photography I know more of what to look for in my next camera, I'm also a firm believer in learning a skill on less than ideal equipment, when you do upgrade you'll have a better appreciation for the equipment and you'll be able to handle lesser equipment better when needed, overall it's great for introduction to photography especially for those that are just curious about the dslr style cameras

    I’ve used this camera for over a year since receiving it as a gift for Christmas. I’ve shot scenery, portraits and sporting events to include racing at Daytona, Talledega and Bristol. The camera is a lot better than I am. My 4000D lacks a shutter release cable whic I use for rocket launches here in FL. I’m still learning.

    I bought this camera as my first slr in 2019 and I was really disappointed with it. After that, I bought a 5d and a 50d and learned how to use them. Going back to the 4000d in manual mode made it worth buying it because it was cheap.

    It’s very good for the price. I advise beginners to start with it and when they’ve peaked with the cameras capabilities they can look at higher end models

    Hey Gav. Thanks for making this review. Subscribed after I saw your struggle with the bugs and hearing that you purchased the camera just for the review. Thanks again.
    About the camera- I personally got it for around USD 150. Someone from my office had bought it for making vlogs, and found it ill-suited for their need. Gave it away after single use and I thought it was great deal. I do not mind the quality of photos in good lighting. I struggle with lower light conditions, but that could more likely be me and not the camera. They used to give two kit lenses in the past ( EF S18 - 55 mm IS II and EF S55 - 250 mm). Now They have moved it for the 4000D , and the 3000D only comes with the 18-55mm lens. So along with the touch and flip screen, I think 4000D is clearly the better choice if buying new.

    I purchased this camera for my mother-in-law for the holidays. I realize its limitations and I did indeed feel how "cheap" it felt, but I tested it out and it gets the job done when paired with a decent lens, especially for absolute beginners who will continue to only casually use it. She lost her old camera, which was a film camera, so she's been out of the game for a while! I put it in a new case with my old Canon EF-S 18-55mm and 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM lenses, so she will have IS now. Although she adores her grandchildren, nana has unfortunately been parentified much more than a grandma should be my sister-in-law and there will be a lot of little interested hands grabbing for this camera I assume, so my reasoning is that it is replaceable should something happen. That combined with less intimidating features is why I went with this purchase. She really wants it simply for occasional family portraits and casual photography.

    This camera is called the 3000d in New Zealand. I brought one secondhand a few years ago and looking back im surprised how good the jpegs straight out of camera are, more natural color compared to my current camera a Nikon Z6. However the camera feels like a toy and iso 400 looks worse than iso 3200 on my Nikon.

  • @Lepewhi
    @Lepewhi 2 ปีที่แล้ว +11

    But, I think that those looking at this camera are coming from a smartphone and are not sure that they want to invest much money into a camera in case it turns out not to be their thing. You, being a professional, have different standards, understandably.

    • @gavtakesphotos
      @gavtakesphotos  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That’s why I suggest a 700d
      It’s cheaper, better built and has more features to grow into

      Not sure about dollar value but in the uk you can definitely pick up a 700d cheaper
      Around £200 seems reasonably what they go for on eBay whereas the 4000d here costs £319 from canon

    • @Lepewhi
      @Lepewhi 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gavtakesphotos In that case, it's a no-brainer. I live in Europe and don't actually know the cost here. I shoot Panasonic.

    if you're buying one used, go for it, but brand new, just think about it a bit more. You're better off getting a older, but better, model with more features, in a much better made body (60D, 70D, 700D, even the 600D, 550D, or a D3300 from Nikon). The 4000D is the equivalent of a 450d from 2008, but with more megapixels, better connectivity and it shoots video, apart from that, the body has cheaper plastic, the AF system is pretty much the same, the screen is smaller and worse resolution wise.
    The sensor of the 4000D was first used in the 7D, released in 2009 as a pro APS-C sensor DSLR. It was then used in the 550d, 600D, 650D and the 700D. While these four cameras use the same sensor, they are better built and have more features (the last three have a articulating screen). But if you really want to buy the 4000D new beacuse you are skeptical about buying second-hand (I've seen some cases), you can, just don't expect wonders from it, it is as bare-bones as it gets. The sensor, while being 15 years old now, still performs great.

      The canon 250d or 200d are better specs that the 4000d and are very pocket friendly
      I've been recently recommending people check out older Olympus cameras, especially if pocket friendly is something you need, an em5 or em10 with the 14-42mm lens will be easily pocketable and have good performance

      @gavtakesphotos  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends what is available, your budget and what you want to photograph
      The canon 80-200mm f2.8 is great but slow to focus so faster subjects will be more difficult
      Any of the canon 70-200mm lenses are great but come with a higher price
      The tamron or sigma 70-200mm f2.8 are definitely worth a look as a cheaper but still very good option

    • @gavtakesphotos

      It can be if doing with a long telephoto directly at the sun but shooting in the direction of the sun for a very brief time should be fine
      Mirrorless cameras are more susceptible to damage though as it’s the sensor that is exposed directly to the sun so just keep the time spent facing it low and it’ll be fine

    • @gavtakesphotos

      That really depends on the time of day, weather and subject as it changes for every shot depending on what's happening
      For a wide shot of an open area such as a lake, field or mountains I'd use f8-11 depending on depth of the scene, base iso of that camera and then balance the exposure using the shutter speed

Just know that the lenses are actually more important than the body. So, invest in the lenses you need. Later, you can update the body if you choose. Enjoy your travels. Out of curiosity, what is your budget? If you can stretch your budget, you might find that you can find a Micro4/3 body/lens which is smaller and smaller lenses. But otherwise, this camera will be fine. Just know that when you buy a camera, you are buying into a system, you are then committed to the lenses, flash....That being said, Canon has a very large lens collection as well as other accessories. Good luck with your decision.
