Three economists just won the Nobel Prize this year for pointing out that functional institutions are the difference between a successful economy and a non-successful one. The DRC needs well functioning institutions: A legal system that is upheld by a judicial system, that is protected by a police and security force, that is upheld by a representative system, that is upheld by the legal system. Unfortunately, every so often, personal human desires get in between these systems before they have a chance to grow and become a part of the culture. No one can expect any country without these systems to suddenly create them overnight, but the first small steps have to be taken, and after that, more small steps. This can take decades, or even centuries.
It will be very hard for these countries to build any resilience and self-defense capacity as long as their resources continue to support the entire western economy. Yes, African leaders with low sense of self-identity and self-esteem are easy to bribe. However, we all should know the constant pressures and manipulation tactics placed by the west in order to continue to extract wealth into their economies.
E.U. industrial giant countries like Germany France and Italy only want the materials to flow at minimal pricing, human rights for the Congolese is a mere gesture and afterthought. Rich in resources has been a curse on Africa and a blessing to Europe.

Under King Leopold II of Belgium, millions of Congolese people died due to brutal colonial exploitation. From 1885 to 1908, Leopold ruled the Congo Free State as his personal property, running it as a violent, profit-driven system focused on extracting rubber, ivory, and other resources. During this period, Congolese people were forced into labor under horrific conditions, often on rubber plantations, where they faced torture, mutilation, and death for failing to meet quotas. Historians estimate that at least 10 million people died as a result of forced labor, violence, disease, and starvation directly linked to the Belgian administration’s practices. International awareness and outrage eventually led to Leopold ceding control of the Congo to the Belgian government in 1908, but the region suffered long-lasting impacts from this period. Stop rewriting history telling us People died from hunger and disease when they were dilebratley eliminated.
