    "Made on a crowd-funded, shoestring budget, The Doom Doc offers a visceral, immersive look into a hazy black hole that lies at one extreme of the musical spectrum. Doom is a style of heavy metal that's all about crushing riffs played at sluggish tempos through huge amps, and the foundations of the genre were laid on Black Sabbath's debut album in 1970. Doom's experienced a resurgence in popularity of late, and in this documentary, local filmmaker, Connor Matheson follows the story of Holy Spider Promotions. They're a DIY collective who put on doom gigs in Sheffield but they're constantly up against it, vying for space and attention on behalf of an extreme and polarising form of music. Through the lens of doom the film explores issues such as drug use, mental health and gentrification, and Connor speaks with luminaries from the scene, including Bill Ward (original drummer of Black Sabbath) and members of Conan, Crowbar and Primitive Man."

      I would argue that you are over simplifying the multiple genre of doom, stoner, drone…etc. I loved some sabbath but not all of it and was more into the Dio era. I was more into Spirit, Blue Cheer, Cream, Terry Riley, LaMonte Young, Blue Oyster Cult, Bloodrock, Flipper, Black Flag, TSOL. Joy Division, Bauhaus. And a lot of these Doom bands in this doc owe more to the Post Punk and NWOBHM than sabbath.

    Listening to Bill Ward talk about his depression and how it drove him to a point where he couldn’t engage with anything musical, even tapping beats….fuck, I feel that. Reached a similar point with music and depression a couple years ago, this thing that was wound into my DNA and my therapy for life, and my depression just taking over to that point that you reject it and revile it, unable to pick up an instrument or listen to a song or even mime along some air guitar or drums because it hurts…heavy stuff. Glad he bounced back.

    The young guys in this documentary remind me of my best friend. Watching this brings me back to ~7 years ago when I was at his house smoking a bong for the first time - he provided the bong and I put on Satan Worshipping Doom by Bongripper, that was a fun time. Been to many festivals and gigs with him over the years, but he ended his life last year 'cause he never got off the drugs and went deeper down the spiral. They played a song off of the album his band was working on at the time at his funeral, I don't think they ever finished the album. Really makes you think that a lot of these people walk a tightrope despite how chill a lot of them come across. Things can be very stressful and shit like LSD can really fuck with your mind.

      @@wenndingofoster5680 Metal would not have evolved as it did in the 80s without punk....most early thrash, death, black metal, grindcore have punk influence/roots. Even pre- thrash, many NWOBHM bands were indirectly or directly shaped by punk. Then before that there's Motorhead, who've always had an affiliation with punk.

    Theres already a couple of Doom/Stoner documentaries about the international doom scene and Doom and Stoner genre in general, this was obviously about small scenes in Sheffield and surrounding areas, scenes and promotional groups like these help small bands get on stage, they organise big all dayers and smaller gigs throughout the year, and help promote local bands, I dont see anything wrong with that, some comments are surprisingly harsh considering that all this Documentary does is give awareness to local scenes, Yes its true theres scenes in Manchester, Liverpool, London, Scotland etc... and I hope theres more documentaries that cover them all, but the fact that theres an interest and the dedication to show off your local scene is a great thing no matter what and criticism is fine but theres no need to be a harsh cunt when its a decent independent documentary made by a few dedicated doom guys that love their local scene.

    • @yorgodullhammer721
      @yorgodullhammer721 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it's not only about the fact that it focuses on one particular area, it's not about doom. probably more about post/stoner/sludge and other hipster related crap, so they shouldn't call it like that no matter how "dedicated" they are. it only does good to the bands shown, other than that it deludes people who don't know what doom metal is about and pisses off those who do. they used a wrong title so criticism is inevitable, get over it.

    Saw wet nuns in Leamington a few years ago and was very sorry to hear about the drummer taking his own life. I remember having a giggle at the shark chomping a woman tattoo on his torso.

    i'm happy for a cool doc (yeah maybe a title of "Sheffield: The Doom Doc" would temper expectations); finding new bands; and Slabdragger drummer rocking a Gang Starr shirt

    Just finished watching...really enjoyed this. I get some of the criticism of the title, but everything I'd seen and read about if beforehand was pretty clear on the content of the film, so people should just get over themselves a bit. I've certainly got no links to the Sheffield doom scene, but I still found this very interesting. Particularly enjoyed the interviews with Conan, Slabdragger and Primitive Man.

    I really enjoy Doom and will soon begin recording guitar demos in order to establish a foundation for an album. But I am not a fan of weed.

    16:45 ...although technically, Wino wasn't in the fold yet when Saint Vitus began--it was Scott Reagers, whom I still prefer as _thee_ vocalist for Vitus ...even though I first heard Vitus in '86 when Born Too Late was released, and that was Wino's first w/Vitus.

      Thanks ... either version of Vitus is the real deal, ya know, although I do dig the overall theatricality that Reagers' voice brings to the music a bit more. The Wino records have that more sombre realism to them, making the material even _heavier_ sounding. I'd cite Born Too Late and Die Healing as my top picks.

    • @DEADidea
      @DEADidea  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, of course. We didn't really have time to go into such detail with the voiceover unfortunately and Saint Vitus are most know for their Wino-era stuff, Born Too Late being a case in point.

    My mate Miff who was from Sheffield used to go to the Lughole and since moving down here to Ipswich has really helped down here with helping put on DIY gigs at a local shared housing space full of really nice hippy folk. I still plan to go up to Sheffield to get to a Lughole gig as it looks sick as fuck of a venue! :D
