If you listen to Moiseiwitsch's tempo of this prelude, it's a hair faster than Gilels. Just because Rachmaninoff played it faster, doesn't mean these guys are playing it too slow. If Rachmaninoff thought they were playing one of his most popular masterpieces wrong, do you think he would have chosen these guys as his pianistic successors?

For this piece, my faves are Sviatoslav and Emil for the G minor 5th. They are distinct from one another but both terrific! GOD, how I love this period and TH-cam. I just wish TH-cam would back off their recent decision to interrupt great classical music with useless ads.

I feel these are the essentials of his approach. Because he maintains such a great tone and melodic continuity at all times, little mistakes can fly under the radar because the overall sound is the focal point, and this stays intact above all else.

It wants to be accelerated into a frenzy only to dissipate in a Midsummer's Night Mist. The middle is pure love and dreams - dive in and let your experience with such show your way.

There is a video extant taken in a battlefield during World War II of Gilels playing this in the center of a group of tanks with soldiers atop them look- ing on during a pause in fighting the German aggressors. Considering the circumstances, I think that with Gilels risking his life to perform music by an anti- com munist compo- ser whose music was pro- scribed in Soviet Russia at the time, along with the magni- ficence of this particular and his champion- ing of this work throughout his illustrious career, that Gilels owns the piece in this sense, although it has been played just as well by count- less pianists ranging from the most esteemed to relative amateurs in lowly piano competitions who gave it everything they had as a tribute to the immortal Sergei Vasiliye- vich Rachmaninoff!!

You play this at the written tempo on the score ( 108), and you will get a bloody mess. This is at around 90 which is perfect.
I like that you can actually hear the last few measures. A lot of pianists play it almost too soft to reach the audience's ears.
