I took my girlfriend on a date to 1 of his concerts. Now we both fell in love with classical music and she bought a piano. We are 25. This is some kind of an unbelievable magic. Matsuev is one of the best.

Il faut être musicien russe pour pouvoir exécuter ce morceau avec tant de délicatesse, de justesse. Je dédie ce morceau à ma maman qui adorait écouter Rachmaninov. C'est la dernière interprétation que nous avons écouté ensemble. Je t'aime maman

I love the heaviness of each note. The reassurance and accuracy of his hands is incredible. Other pianists sacrifice velocity for accuracy especially on the chords and octaves, and to me, they lose the essence of the grit and ferocity. Matsuev masterfully captures the strength, depth, and true Russianness into this piece.

@@vladislavstezhko1864 You never heard of what is called Russian Soul (that is what he meant) ? If you never heard the expression and don't understand it's meaning, you will not not understand it now it needs intuition and no explanation will do it. You just have to feel it.

This might be the second best performance I’ve heard of this and I’ve heard about 30 of them. This is well done. My favorite remains the Richter but this one’s awfully good.
It seems that this performance was made "by the way" in the situation of people's entertainment, occasionally. BBC proms, you know. For this piece, one should be a big, no, a huge to perform. As huge as Rachmaninoff was, almost two meters height. Matsuev is a perfect fit for this. And he plays it with almost no efforts (seemingly), like Salvador Dali draws his famous signature on a napkin. Four minutes for us - dozens of years for Matsuev.
I always find myself going back to Olga Scheps' version. 🥰
This interpretation really calls out the essence of this prelude, the contrast of the martial march and the romantic longing.

Check out Richter. I may have listened to 20 recordings by now, everything from Josef Hoffman to Van Cliburn to Lang Lang to Larrocha to Rachmaninoff on piano roll. The most compelling performance I’ve heard yet is Sviatoslav Richter. (I’ve heard Lugansky and I think two Gilels performances.)

Далеко не лучшее. Думаю Мацуев устал, так коряво сыграл, даже если закрыть глаза на промахи, но всю изюминку в средней части не сыграл. Странно что профессионал не сыграл трехголосие как нужно. Поэтому думаю что он устал, спешил закончить сыграть произведение. Послушайте как аккуратно играет Yuja Wang (в желтом платье), и Киссин отлично сыграл.
Ну, не перегибайте) Денис - красавчик вопросов нет. Исполнил потрясающе. Но послушайте эту прелюдию в исполнении Рихтера.

I’m just coming to this conclusion now and I was a huge fan of Rachmaninoff and richter before.

@@789armstrong yeah he’s great, I wish Horowitz recorded the second concerto it would probably be my favorite ever. There is a short clip of him playing it. I love richter it is my go to for RPC2, Volodos is the only one I’d consider similar level. That was until I had listened to Mastuev (I have before when I was a VERY beginner into classical and didn’t realize how great it was, I preferred richter for some reason).
Rachmaninoff would be proud, hopefully one day I can play atleast 80% as good as this master.
@@pablobear4241 Byron Janis studied under Horowitz for 12 years and has outstanding Rach 1,2 & 3. I quite buying CD's for 3 years after hearing Volodos Rach 2 and discovering it wasnt available on CD. When I was a teenager Richter was incomparable on Rachmaninoff. On the Rach 3 Horowitz/Ormandy has been digitally remastered on Sony and is my absolute favorite.Excellent sound too.
@@789armstrong I’m aware of Janis recordings, I only discovered them recently. Since I’m new to classical I’m trying to broaden my horizons and listen to more pianists both modern and from golden age, and more rep. So less Rachmaninoff (which who gave me a lot to plunder in this world), but, all of these are great, and will obviously be revisited especially as my ear improves…
Also, What do you think about Grimaud RPC2 as well btw? And Lang Lang with Boston orchestra. In my experience richter, volodos, and now mastuev are top tier, but it would be cool to find more interesting modern performances.
I mostly only prefer the old ones though, cortot, Horowitz, Friedman, Hoffmann, and Rachmaninoff being some of my favorites. Modern pianists volodos, mastuev, andsome others like aregrich, wang, and pogorelich are solid. Even Lang Lang sometimes, although he can be a bit distasteful atleast he takes some risk…
My main focus and goal is to play the music of rach, Scriabin, and Rubinstein well. Also do fun transcriptions like Horowitz, liszt, busoni, etc…
Hopefully as I improve And keep listening I can do rhem justice how Horowitz, Rachmaninoff, or Rubinstein would have wanted it. I hope that I can keep alive the playing of these greats.

Yes, I noticed it as well. His right hand thumb hit the A note instead of the G (La instead of Sol). But it's very small, the whole performance with the tempo control he displayed is insane. One of the best interpretations ever of the piece
