This island was discovered on Christmas day 1643, so it was named Christmas Island. Christmas Island is a 134km2 jungle paradise, located in the Indian Ocean, about 3.5 hours northwest of Perth (Australia). But geographically, this remote "jewel" is closer to Indonesia than mainland Australia. There are only about 1,700 residents living on the island.
Christmas Island has a thriving coral reef and 250 endemic species. An islander named Sook Yee Lai said: "We can do many activities such as diving, surfing, caving and hiking through the forest to hang out on beaches that few people know about."
Although the community on Christmas Island is small, it is vibrant and diverse. About 22% of residents are of Chinese origin, 17% Australian, 16.1% Malaysian, 12.5% ​​British and 3.8% Indonesian.
