Only those with spoilt lives complain about Perth, this has been my home for 40 years and it's a beautiful place. I go for walks peacefully and safely at 3am, a lot of cities are too dangerous for that.
Hot weather is great. My advice buy a house within 5km of the beach, as the seabreeze cools Perth significantly. River can be good too as it can catch the breeze as long as its not too far inland. Embrace the beach lifestyle and swim in the morning, afternoon or early evening. Go for walks long the coast, swim, picnics... most of the year its actually quite cool along the coast after 3pm with a strong seabreeze. Where its just cement glass and steel its going to be hot. As well as further inland. Its not difficult and if you want a cool house and backyard then choose a place closer to the ocean and elevated. And of course, avoid houses with large west facing windows!
@@user-gd5tq7df8h in the southern hemisphere you should generally look for the windows on the northern side as that is where the sun will go into the house in winter. Whereas in summer the sun is largely overhead to the north. So no sunlight will come into the house on the northern side (if you have eaves) between Oct to Mar approx. In summer the hot sun will be in the west as that is where it sets. Same with east really but sun is rising then so mightn't be quite as hot. So you don't want full windows to west. In summer it sets in the south west. But in winter the sun doesn't really come into the westerly windows as much until late afternoon. As for the breeze. In Perth its great to have windows that will open in the south and west. As that is where the seabreeze comes from. So in summer you'll cool your house down.
@@user-gd5tq7df8h I think there are definitely flats. It depends on the quality of flats you're after and where. There would be a lot less high rise than Melbourne. I think there are a lot of flats in Maylands. Certainly parts of Maylands are a bit run down and dodgy. But that's because of flats that were built 45 years ago really. Its on the river, near major train routes and about 5km from the city. So should be value there for the location. Or plenty of flats in suburbs around doubleview glendalough innaloo and you're not far from freeway about about 4km from beach. But really depends on how much and what appeals. Being a flat I reckon parkland and eatery places are important. Parts of Victoria Park may be ok. But you want to be within walking from river.
Nice video! You nailed it. I was born in Perth. I lived in Melbourne for 3 years and now I live in Sydney. One point is I feel Perth has a lot of issues with violence and agressive behavior in the city and north bridge. I feel much more safe in SYD or Melbourne using PT or just in general walking around downtown. They need to clean up the streets and support people with addiction and not let them take over the city with their antisocial behavior. It’s not family friendly
You're most definitely from Perth with that comment. First thing I noticed was the lack of random aggro when I went to other cities; they don't call us the wild west for nothing
I moved to Perth Monday from London- now currently looking for a job in project administration - really hope this move works out for me as I love it so much! the chill lifestyle, beaches, the people - just so lovely.
Hi Tasha! I'm in a similar position! Looking for a product management job as a newcomer haha wouldn't mind connecting with someone that's on a similar boat!

With just a lil bit more work on the public transport and its efficiency and timings i feel like perth will become a perfect place for someone like me who loves quiet life🥰 It is nice here ❤
The making friends part is so true. Coming as an int student at Curtin, it really has been challenging making friends here. Hopefully, joining clubs and volunteer activities would help out.
It's definitely not easy but so great to hear that you're getting involved - those clubs/activities are definitely a great way to meet more people. that's also how i made new friends at uni! and a lot of new people you meet may also introduce you to more friends. hope you're enjoying your time here
Perth is not a good place to move to right now. We have an appallingly low rental vacancy rate - 0.3% so good luck finding somewhere to live. And if you’re lucky enough to find somewhere to live, be prepared to live on baked beans because rents are astronomical.
Construction industry is terrible nationwide, especially post covid 2020. The govt grants created the building rush, people signed up in masses. What we are currently experiencing are the consequences of those govt grants. It created material and supplies shortages and trades quotes went up. Obviously rent will go up due to builders not being able to deliver houses. Rents went up only due to the rush of people unable to move into their house. Property owners are only taking advantage of the rush. Govt should have acted swiftly to mitigate the rent price increases. Good thing is we are at the end tail of the rush and most builders are now able to slowly filter out those backlog of houses.
@@ap2603 it’s going to take a very long time to address the backlog. Perth had the largest % rise/per pop. then other cities in Australia. We have a severe housing crisis right now. I read a report somewhere that 52 000 houses need to built right now to address the current backlog 😟 I think anyone moving to Perth must be made aware that unless they have family/ friends to stay with, finding a rental will be extremely difficult and expensive.
Absolutely! Nows not the time to welcome more migrants into Perth this will only add to the pressures the market is currently under. It's actually cheaper to live in Melbourne right now than here in Perth. You can visit, but please wait until we sort out our housing before moving here.
@@ChrisJohannsen It’s absolutely not cheaper to rent than Melbourne. That’s an ill informed comment. I lived in Fremantle for 3 years which is actually a good 25-30 from the city. A one bedroom was $600. In Melbourne on chapel st - south Yarra. 10-15 from city it’s $500. Perth is in a severe rental crisis and prices are just ridiculous. Def not cheaper than Melbourne
I moved interstate and find a lot of these cons apply everywhere. Sydney is the worst when it comes to opening hours. It's not until you move away from Perth that you realise just how good the state is. So many of my friends ended up moving back from Vic, Bris and NSW for that reason.
Thank you. We just visited Western Australia from Melbourne, Victoria for the first time. We are having a cold winter here, I do miss your lovely weather and beaches. I would love to move to Perth and WA as i feel you life style and outdoors can be enjoyed in all seasons compared to Cold old Melbourne. Cheers.
Aw! I'm so happy to hear you enjoyed your visit to WA. Completely agree - the great weather makes such a difference to our lifestyle here :) Thanks so much for watching and commenting!
Good video hun❤ have been in Perth for 10 years now and yep you’re pretty much spot on😊 Although I will say the freeway traffic has got a lot worse in the past year but I guess compared to other cities it’s light traffic -I just got too comfortable 😅
Hi, yeah I’m looking to moving to Perth I’ve been wanting to do it for years but gotta wait financially to do it but I think it’s an awesome place and you’re right a lot of the buses and trains and ferries was great loved it they thought of everyone even the disability people, because in Brisbane, they don’t think a disability people that gaps between the platform and the train is ridiculous as well as the transport is good better than Queensland I found when I was staying at Scarborough. I found it difficult for a direct bus to go to Hillarys and freo , but besides that I thought the transport was wonderful. This time I went over there I found I saw so much of Perth that I haven’t seen in years and I just can’t wait to move over there but for now I’m just gonna have to keep doing my yearly visits. Thank you for the pros and cons
More people live in houses and do things around their house. The density is less, so people don't go out for dinner all the time. They're more likely to stay home and do sport or recreation. Perth is a great outdoors city, with sport and activities based around being outside.
Living in Sydney all my life bought land in Perth over 20 years ago best investment I ever did ..have now built a house and go back and fwds to both cities ..Perth is the best city to live hands down .. Beautiful place😊
Thanks for the video Jamie, when you mentioned commuting was easy and took less time to get around Perth by car, it is very subjective depending on many factors like where you live and what time of day you start your commute. For me, I find catching the train and bus more quicker than driving, but it's different for each person.
True, I lived near a train line my whole life so it was super easy to get around but I do find the bus system daunting. Though, I find it daunting no matter where I am in the world.
Absolutely agree, great take on pros and cons! I've just moved to Perth and the only thing I'd add as a con is that its quite harder to find a job here than over east as a professional with no experience/studies in Australia, only overseas though!
@@SundayswithJamie I love it here! Just moved in from Chile, hope I can find a job and a solid group of friends soon :) Btw I see a loot of people here sharing similar experiences! Maybe it would be a good idea to create an "expats/newcomers" in perth? haha
Lived there for 20 years ,back in europe now for the last 14 years . Perth has certainly developed the last 10 years and property prices are crazy . I actually loved doing the road trips especially North to Broome but inregards to daily life in one spot i prefer europe and the UK but for those that have Australia in their heart ,you must go iit is a great country but for me its the larrikin aussies with their sunny outlook on life i miss .
We are visiting Perth from Melbourne and Google's AI recommended this video and we could really resonate with all the things you said. We had bought a house here in Perth an year ago and still undecided whether to move or not. Weather definitely is a big drawcard compared to Melbourne's gloomy and cold weather. Would love to hear your thoughts on couple of other things like water, doesn't taste good in Perth and kids education. Thanks
The water is terrible. It’s hard and tastes like chlorine as a lot of our water comes from desalination. Best to put filtration systems on your taps or one of those complete house filtration systems. Some of the best schools are SOR e.g Rossmoyne, Willeton, Applecross. Or go private as schools here have a problem with discipline.
Oh wow! Definitely a big decision. I’m very happy we made the move over but in saying that, I have my family and friends I grew up with here. the water isn’t an issue for me at all as I just drink filtered water and am looking forward to raising our future kids here - personally think there are a lot of good schools, just need to check the school zones
As someone who lived in Perth for 11 years and moved to Melbourne this year, I'd add these for the Perth life: Cons: - Connectivity - Most isolated capital city, which makes it harder to be move around domestically and internationally. I believe has an element to play into my next point. - Mental isolation - WA has a short-man syndrome, with people really wanting to drive home the point of "We don't need anyone else". This inferiority complex is very off-putting and makes everyone here live inside a bubble. - Driving - WA drivers are THE. WORST. DRIVERS. It is a daily occurrence to be sitting behind someone doing 10kmph less than the speed limit, in the right-most lane of the freeway, or for 3 drops of water to fall from the sky and see accidents stack up on the streets. - Diversity - WA is not a melting pot of cultures by any means and it shows in the way of thinking of the locals. Every third person works for the mining industry, which doesn't help with this aspect either. Pros: - Accessible beaches - Most pristine beaches and within 20-30 minutes of most places! Truly a luxury. - Weather - I know you covered this but this can't be emphasised enough. With the exception of a month or two, most of the year is pristine.
@@SundayswithJamie Thanks so much for your informative videos, Jamie. Believe it or not, I watched some of your videos many months ago to get a feel for the Melbourne life before moving. It was very informative and I love how calm and positive your demeanour regarding everything you explain is. Also, I read back my response here again and it sounds so spiteful and negative! 😬😬 That was certainly not the intended tone haha, I could learn a thing or two from your approach.
take your friends to picnic, BBQ and many good beaches. maybe bar or club at northbridge in the evening. Frementle is a good place to walk around and would be nice to spend a few days to go to Rottnest island. quite a lovelt place to visit.
I've lived in Perth for 37 years and the suburbs are boring, and yes you are correct about clicky groups. The public transport is dismissal, and yes a car is necessary unless you live inner Perth City. Perth is extremely expensive, everything from food to amenities compared to the eastern states. After you've lived here for along time and seen it all darn near, it's a reclusive lifestyle unless you have a ton of outgoing friends and like doing the same thing repeatedly. Having lived in NSW, QLD, Melbourne, Adelaide, I'd rate Perth and if you love the beach and hell hot weather at 6/10. It's not as alive as the east, nor as beautiful in terms of forests, mountains and inland waters. It depends on ones perspective of beautiful. Plenty of sand and ocean of course hours or that, dry heat long days of super hot 44-47 degrees . Venues are always a 30 minute drive becuase Perth is so spread out, often small art pop ups and average venues for artists. As for night life poor, few clubs and not many bars. Coffee lounges have popped up in the last 10 years but they don't last long and close down. Everything shuts here to early, what was a low crime city has changed in the last three years. I will say, Perth is a clean modern city and architecture is interesting, further south there is some nice bush but nothing like QLD as example. We do have wine tours and the like but very expensive,.even Rottnest island is expensive to visit and again it's all beaches and super hot rides around the island or bus ride and the pub, after five times doing that it's like yeah ok. Markets are less and expensive these days, none seem to last long. Winter there is much less to do. Whereas, in Melbourne and NSW you meet at coffee lounges and gather, not in Perth. I'm a very out going person, rarely drink and don't smoke pot, I've diverse interests and Perth is boring, even a TAFE class here is hell expensive. If you've a fabulously high income you may like Perth more. Perth is the largest culturally diverse state in AU or was in 2020. Doctors and dentistry is appalling in this state and unbelievably expensive, expect to double what you'd pay in Melbourne. Growing food can be very difficult due to poor soil quality which is sand and heat, garden centres are extremely overpriced and water is the most expensive aspect of owning a home. The average power bill every two months will blow your mind at a minimum of $400.00 which is a conservative estimate.
I’m moving in a couple months with some relatives that are going to be working in the mines. I’m so nervous bc I’ve only ever lived in Auckland and can tell it’s going to be so different. A bit worried about making friends bc I’m already well into my 20s but I’m just gonna have to get some hobbies and see if anything happens 😂
aw i wish you the best of luck settling in perth and i hope you love it! Well into your 20s is still so young and hobbies is such a great way to make friends :) all the best with the big move!
I think the Australian life style and culture resemble a lot with South Asian culture. Examples: (1) Shops close early, (2)Australians are friendly, but not to be friends.
Do you have any tips to finding housing/apartment rentals in Perth? I'm a Canadian thinking about moving to WA for university :) Any tips would be great!
It's not a good time to move to Perth at the moment due to our housing crisis the rental market is very tight with just under 1% vacancy rate and median $600pw and rising. Better wait untill market cools
There's probably more 24hr supermarkets in Perth than in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane combined. Fact check that if you like! Lots of decent 24 hr IGA's and Spudsheds in Perth which I've found does not exist in Melb/Syd/Bris.
Did you stay by yourself when you went to grad school in Melbourne ? I’m wanting to finish my studies over east in either Sydney or Brisbane. But not sure how much it costs and if that’s attainable for a student
i first stayed at student accommodation and then lived in apartments with housemates (personally, it would have cost too much for me to live alone, e.g. in a studio). i suggest looking at real estate websites for apartments etc as well as sites where you can see rental costs of a room and see if it would work for your budget
Thanks for your wonderful and informative video. I’m living in Melbourne for past 10 years now and I can say it’s beautiful place but has depressing and gloomy weather..not a laid back place to live and no community vibes, more people are arrogant. Thinking of moving to PERTH hope it’s way better there that life has to offer.
Good video, I have lived in Perth for 20 years. Positive I had a very successful photography & video business.. You covered the negative side...😅 however you failed to mention the lousy drivers...😅
Hi, me and and my family are considering the move to Perth as I can access a sponsored visa. Jus quick question , would a 125k yearly income be enough for a family of 5? Thankyou
Thank you! I was born in Indonesia and lived there for several years, I learnt English at an international school - the twang has persisted even though I moved to Aus sooo young! 😂
Not true about Our Transport System.. At least its Way Cheaper to Travel on Public Transport here n we have New Rail lines going all around Perth now...
@@Bwajster I don’t know for certain if it’s better in those cities, but overall tech jobs are very difficult to find, especially well paying ones, as the industry is overprescribed. At my son’s company, they receive well over a thousand applications for a single job, most from recent immigrants. Sometimes people come in with their CVs literally begging for a job. It’s very sad.
Welcome to Perth!! How have you been liking it?! I’ve made some new friends from work which is great and have been able to reconnect with my undergrad and high school friends 😊 thanks so much for watching!
Racism, safety and job opportunity please explain these points. I live in Tasmania and disability, aged care and nursing are the job sectors here. Frankly speaking jobless Tasmania.
hmm i would say there are definitely many suburbs that are walkable! but if you're talking more broadly, it's still very much a car based city in my opinion
I don't really agree that Perth isn't that good to visit. Compare to Melbourne. Melbourne has footy and sport... what else? More shows to see? But the beaches and river are no good. It has museums and art galleries that they put more investment into. Shopping? so what?
I moved to perth for 3 years and now have moved to Melbourne. Pros and cons of Perth but the biggest cringe is their saying “over east”. , which refers to any city of the country but theirs” Such an ignorant comment and they allll say it. “Over east” is actually “Australia”.
If you are a single man and don't yet speak English... Perth is not going to be the Australian adventure... Here, foreigners are not as familiar as Sydney and Melbourne... For your own good, don't try it... I spoke with many people from various countries who started with English in Perth and they are not happy... For me, Perth has been the Australian nightmare... Go to the East Coast and then when you have English, come to Perth, and everything will be easy and nice... maybe we Latinos have a different vision of loneliness.
Lived in Perth for 6 years, pretty boring but excellent beaches 🌞 and a good place to raise a family. Why'd you leave Melbourne! (to make a family? 😅🍼) All 100% though 🎉
My wife and I are the same! We’re newlyweds too and decided to move to Melbourne to experience something new while we’re still able to! We moved in the middle of winter of 2023 and it was so cold for so long that we missed Perth sorely but during the warmer season Melbourne is just in a class of its own with its many offerings of whatever your drift is be it sport, art, music, culture, etc.! Also, being able to buy good coffee past 3pm is unbeatable.
The move itself was potato... $5k or so for a container. Being homeless for a few weeks was also expensive.@@SundayswithJamie However! Melbourne is awesome, no big country town any more.

nope - i went to an international school in jakarta when i was very young and had american teachers but moved to perth when i was around six years old! the international school accent has stuck with me
No, don't come to Perth. Nearly all the water is expensively desalinated and the more people we get, the bigger our water bills get. I don't want to have to pay more for my water.
@@DillonAlderson-gr7st Why would water be cheaper if more of it has to be desalinated? Desalination is far more expensive than water from dams or even underground.
Did u forget that it's in the worst geographical location, 5 hours away from syndey and Singapore and 8 hours away from Auckland and like 16 hrs from West coast of the US, too isolated

Yes, the inner city is very dangerous at night.
I moved to Perth Monday from London- now currently looking for a job in project administration - really hope this move works out for me as I love it so much! the chill lifestyle, beaches, the people - just so lovely.

Perth sounds a LOT like California while Melbourne / SYD are NYC 😅 very interesting how geographical factors affect an area’s culture & lifestyle
oh interesting haha! i've only visited cali a couple of times but can see the similarities with the weather and more laidback lifestyle!
California has more types of industries and job opportunities plus the larger population 40 million US together has 333.3 million Aus only has 27 million

Still cheaper and easier than Melbourne
Cheers.

Your con about making friends in Perth is what I find about Sydney...and I'm from Perth.
Aw sorry to hear! Hope you have some luck making some friends over east
My favorite part is at 6:23, gave me quite a laugh! Another great watch :)

Thanks for the video Jamie, when you mentioned commuting was easy and took less time to get around Perth by car, it is very subjective depending on many factors like where you live and what time of day you start your commute. For me, I find catching the train and bus more quicker than driving, but it's different for each person.
thanks for watching! yes that's so true - i'm sharing my experience living in perth but i know it's different for everyone :)

Thanks appreciate your response
Oh wow! Definitely a big decision. I’m very happy we made the move over but in saying that, I have my family and friends I grew up with here. the water isn’t an issue for me at all as I just drink filtered water and am looking forward to raising our future kids here - personally think there are a lot of good schools, just need to check the school zones
Great language material for the Speaking test in the IELTS exam, thanks!
glad it's helpful!
As someone who lived in Perth for 11 years and moved to Melbourne this year, I'd add these for the Perth life:
Cons:
- Connectivity - Most isolated capital city, which makes it harder to be move around domestically and internationally.
Pros:
- Accessible beaches - Most pristine beaches and within 20-30 minutes of most places! Truly a luxury.
- Weather - I know you covered this but this can't be emphasised enough. With the exception of a month or two, most of the year is pristine.
Thanks for sharing your experience, I’m sure it’ll be helpful for other people to read as well 😊 hope you’re enjoying Melbourne!
That was certainly not the intended tone haha, I could learn a thing or two from your approach.
take your friends to picnic, BBQ and many good beaches. maybe bar or club at northbridge in the evening. Frementle is a good place to walk around and would be nice to spend a few days to go to Rottnest island. quite a lovelt place to visit.
love all these suggestions! and absolutely love visiting rotto :)
Be sure to visit the Fremantle Markets also
I've lived in Perth for 37 years and the suburbs are boring, and yes you are correct about clicky groups.
An accurate description of Perth. If it weren’t for my children who are settled here, I would pack up and leave tomorrow.
Dullsville.
I know exactly what you mean, my son is here@@chappydl2520

Did you stay by yourself when you went to grad school in Melbourne ? I’m wanting to finish my studies over east in either Sydney or Brisbane. But not sure how much it costs and if that’s attainable for a student
i first stayed at student accommodation and then lived in apartments with housemates (personally, it would have cost too much for me to live alone, e.g. in a studio). i suggest looking at real estate websites for apartments etc as well as sites where you can see rental costs of a room and see if it would work for your budget
