    Which one is more difficult?? 😱 Scarbo or Islamey?????? 😆

    For those who don’t know, Ravel wrote this piece after a poem “Scarbo”. The poem describes a hideous goblin which disappears and reappears at will. In the poem, the writer describes how the goblin will laugh, scratch on the walls, and even grate his nails on the silk of his bed. This piece is often considered one of the most technically difficult pieces ever written. Gotta love Ravel

    • @donnytello1544
      @donnytello1544 4 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      For those who also don’t know, this entire piece was written based on the poem “gaspard de la nuit” which means “treasurers of the night”. the poem contains three parts, "ondine" "le gibet" then "scarbo", as does maurice ravels composition

    • @lefudj4236

    • @donnytello1544
      @donnytello1544 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      A W yes your right, the poem doesn’t have just those three parts. i meant to say the song contains the three parts, based on those three poems (ondine, le gibet, and scarbo). also, your right, gaspard is just a name, but technically the name gaspard means trasurer in french, hence "treasurer of the night".

    Scarbo (The poem this piece was based on)
    I have heard him again and again
    and seen him too! Scarbo the gremlin.
    He comes in the dead of the night,
    when the moon glitters in the sky like a silver shield
    on an azure banner strewn with golden bees.
    I have heard his laugh boom from the shadow,
    and his fingernails grate on the silk of my bed curtains!
    I have seen him drop from the ceiling
    pirouette on one foot and roll across the floor
    Like the spindle of a spinning wheel
    when a dark witch weaves!
    And I think he had vanished? No. At such times
    the gremlin would rise between me and the moon
    As high and narrow as a gothic steeple -
    a golden bell swaying like his pointed cap!
    But then, his body would change, became as blue
    and translucent as the wax of a taper,
    his face as pale as candle grease -
    and suddenly he would be extinguished.

    Initially I have thought that Scarbo was only intended as "the most difficult piano piece to ever exist" and that the musical values of the piece would have been non-existent. I was wrong completely as I rehear the piece, and everything about Scarbo is beautiful and mesmerizing.
    This makes me convinced that the piece is probably extremely difficult in a sense that not only is the technical requirement being overboard, but the musical structure and interpretation - which probably makes the piece difficult itself.

      @yashbspianoandcompositions1042 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I wouldn't call it entirely atonal because there is melody in this piece. And top be honest Maurice Ravel was an impressionistic composer who added a lot of colour and tone to his music. Being atonal means you are completely removing the idea of melody and tonal value of the concept. If you like atonal music then you should listen to Arnold Schoenberg, Oliver Messian etc.

      Ye or the pavane, such an unashamedly beautiful piece. Would love to hear his interpretation, though I fear he might just rush through it XD. And if not that the second or fifth miroir. I dont really care all that much for the 'loud' Ravel pieces, they definitely sound cool but they often just stress me out.

    • @HeartofthePiano

      @@petregidea1605 I learnt all of Miroirs as an undergrad- Barque was definitely one of the easiest. It's so well-written that getting the right textures & softness is reasonably straightforward

    Perfect tempo and fingerings! Keeps the anticipation/tension high while making the near-impossible figurations actually doable at that speed! I think Ravel would be pleased by the fact that this artist could do what he couldn't! with regard to latter question: can't compare apples to oranges - a lot depends on the temperament and physiognomy of the performer...

    I really like your fast-sections interpretation. It is very fast but clear; especially, from swiftly move across the keyboard from 2.53 to the end of first climax in 4.48, it is really awesome. However, the middle section sounds not dark and sinister enough to me. And the fast trilling at 6.06 to 6.16 sounds too bright. Lastly, the built-up to the last climax is as awesome as its peak. I love it. I’d be great to hear you play Ondine and Le Gibet to complete the set.
