Did you know that London has the most CCTV cameras per capita in the world, yet it's still a dangerous city? When you're in public spaces, it's not an infringement on your privacy. Do you know how many children and women were trafficked in China every year before the widespread use of CCTV? CCTV has been a lifesaver for many people.
1. These cameras are all in public places, where there is no expectation of "Privacy" anyway. Even if you're not caught on camera, you will be seen by passersby.
2. The government does not intend to monitor you specifically. You are not that important. As long as you are not breaking the law, you can do anything you want in public places.
3. There is no one watching each camera all the time. Cameras simply record footage silently. Only when a crime or incident occurs do the police check the camera recordings. The cameras provide a way to review the situation if necessary.
4. If no crime or incident occurs, the video footage is erased within a few weeks. Imagine if it wasn't erased-recording all that data would require so many hard drives that even all the hard drives in the world wouldn't be enough

Patriots' act pretty much allowed US government to monitor anyone they wanted especially Chinese nationals. It is nothing new. One of the founding members of NASA was American Chinese. He was deported to China despite most of his families had nothing to do with the communist government. There is a long list of unjust arrest high profile arrest of Chinese scientists that never turned up anything. It is actually happening in the US. 2. I've been to Turkiye where people literally shout at you or follow you to sell you merchandise or service, not saying this is bad, but this is considered what you said people forcing sales. In your video, the owner of the store just politely said hello, like he did to everyone else without any other words trying to sell you anything! He let you film in the store without any other words trying to sell you anything. And this is forcing selling in your eyes.
3. You think the merchandise is tacky... what a word with no manners and respect. You can choose to buy or not to buy anything, it's your freedom, but god there are so many merchandise in China cause we have the ability to manufacture anything. There are so many wonderful merchandise that you don't even know how and where to buy, cause from the video you seem to have a very low budget, without even going to proper restaurants. Not saying this is bad or anything, it is okay to have a low budget, you can do things within your budget, but to attack because you don't have the budget to do something is such as a low blow.
4. From my research online, Ireland is not California, and has a lot of gloomy days all through the year, do you think it's because of the pollution or climate? Beijing cannot have any gloomy days because clearly you can see the sun shines in the video, and shadows and so on, and still these arrogant people don't know there is a thing called clouds, and think Beijing has one gloomy day and that's because of pollutions.
5. Every foreigner pays the same ticket price as the locals. Chinese ticket system only has tiers for children, adults, and seniors, with no differences between Chinese and foreigners. Countries like Turkiye and India has very different ticket prices for locals and foreigners. You are paying what is required to a famous sight because it is a historical treasure, just like many other sights around the world with fair price, yet you are still complaining, I don't know what to say. If you have an agenda, of course, you won't say anything good, but I didn't expect you can make negative shit up from nowhere.

Not only you, but everyone should follow RULES of the places you are travelling to. For instance, you will be fined up to $500 for Jay-Walking in Singapore for the first time, and could face a 6-month jail time in you keep doing it. If you are travelling to Singapore, you will follow the rules unless you want to be put in jail. In China, we allow Jay-Walking, there is no f**king social credit score like you guys have created to punish people. But we have RULES! If you don't want to follow rules of the place, don't come! China is extremely welcoming, and people are so nice to foreigners because we consider them as guests and we want them to have the best time in our home. So we tend to forgive things they're doing, like filming other people without consent, shouting on the street, do weird arrogant things, not speaking Chinese or even trying to translate with phones but complaining no one speaks English, and not following rules. BUT CHINA IS NOT WHERE YOU CAN ACT AS MONKEYS! ACT AS HUMANS AND FOLLOW RULES. This should be the very basic thing that your parents teach you when you are a baby, I don't know why I have to type long paragraphs to literate you.

Besides a lot of presidents and other countries visited Beijing in the past a few months. so I would say it’s pretty normal to increase the security. In fact I find the police and security guards very friendly and helpful. When I was in Beijing recently, I tend to get lost because I am not good at using maps and mobile internet. So the ample times I approached them for directions and help, they were so helpful and patient. I remember asking for directions from some London police officers many years ago, they were so unfriendly. I guess they think it is not their duty. 😩
I must also add the police in China DO NOT carry guns! Unlike Western countries. Look at the aggressive actions taken by the US police against their own citizens!

This couple has been nothing but complimentary, adventurous, excited, and grateful throughout their China series. They have raved about the food, the transportation system, the views, the people, and many other things. Their videos, which are great and impactful precisely because they have been so *genuine* and *authentic* in them, have done more good for China's image as a travel destination than any of you keyboard warriors has ever done in your entire life.
These videos are effective at changing people's opinions about China and making them want to give going to China a chance because the people making them, are real people with real feelings and honest opinions which you may disagree with. We all hate the incessant fear-mongering and biased coverage of China in Western media. But If we want more Westerners to tell their stories about their experiences in China that will counter the pervasive narrative, we have to be open to and tolerant of hearing different voices that are not effusive with praise 100% of the time. The rest of the world is not 新闻联播。 Otherwise, go back to watching 央视/舌尖上的中国, which has changed exactly 0 Westerner's opinion on China.
As a Beijinger live near the Tiananmen Square, when I go to the Tiananmen Square, I am always required to report my ID number. I dont think its a unreasonable requirement, because these areas need more strict security measures. But I understand that you felt unhappy for you can not get into the Forbidden City although through so much security examination. By the way, there is almost no haze in beijing since 2008, the holding of Olympics Games, the government steps efforts to get rid of pollution. When we see the policemen, we feel safe , because Chinses policemen and army are called People's police and People's army, they work for us. We are not afraid of them, we trust them.
you just need to expect at tourist areas especially near major government buildings, there will be a lot of security. so if you look at the map, most of the tourist sites are right in the middle of beijing next to government buildings such as the people's congress. also you need to be realistic. there are over a billion people in china. there isn't the resources to track people in real time. unless you are doing something bad or illegal, no one is going to care and watch every tourist's boring daily activities. what the cameras are for is to reference to check back on if something does go wrong. if you ever had an issue and needed help from the police, you would know it takes them a bit to check cctv to get things sorted out. yes central beijing isn't the most tourist friendly place, but if you go outside where normal people live, it's pretty normal like most other cities in china.

I’m so disappointed that you two just focus on the cameras and police, even you can’t distinguish guard from police. The camera is mostly used for recording and archiving, I never feel uncomfortable with this.

I enjoyed Beijing but its most probably harder to "wing it," compared to other Chinese cities especially when you need to buy tickets in advance more times than not. Security wise it can get strict especially if you go at a time when they are hosting important events. I was there last year with a tour group when a certain Russian gentlemen was visiting, and why I say gentleman I mean Putin, so security was tight. Fortunately our guide helped us get through things and the Forbidden city still had lots of tourists.
I was again in Beijing briefly this year and I got a local friend to show me around to eateries. Less security conscious because no big meeting or foreign officials coming in at the time.
Definitely not the air pollution 😂😂😂 it's only cloudy, I have watched many different TH-camrs making videos in (北京) Beijing, I would say half chance you could see the blue skies.

Since I have been to Beijing so many times, I prefer to go back to China via some other cities instead of Beijing, such as Shanghai, Fuzhou, Wuhan, Chengdu etc. Security is always higher in Beijing than in other places in China, for understandable reasons, e.g. national and international top political activities are taking place almost daily in the Great Hall of the People, which is just a couple of hundred meters away from Tian An Men (Gate of Heavenly Peace). A lot of 1st time foreign tourists visit only the well-known first-tier cities such as Shanghai, Beijing, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, Chongqing, Chengdu and Xian, in reality, there are many less well-known cities with more interesting characteristics for you to visit, such as Nanjing the southern capital literately just under the shadow of Shanghai, Tianjin close to Beijing and is the gateway to Beijing, Suzhou famous for traditional Chinese gardens, Hangzhou where the West lake is located, Qingdao for its German influence including German beer, Xiamen a beautiful island on the mainland side of Taiwan strait, just name a few.
Your videos were cute until this one. I sadly have to give this video a dislike because it is full of ignorance, bias, prejudice and arrogance. I personally don't like Beijing that much either, but all your reasons are ridiculous. Maybe do some research and educate yourself before making those claims about safety cameras, police and made-up pollution...

when I was travelling in the main square in Istanbul there were a lot of heavily armed SWAT police, but I felt completely fine, didn't feel I was being monitored coz I was not about to do anything harm and I was just nobody to them why would them waste their gigabite memory to monitor me. if they need monitor everyone in that square I guarantee you they need 1000 TB memory to store all data for one day, imagine how much memory chips needed to monitor everyone all year around. Even let say I was monitored by Turkish armed forces, were lauching political campagns against its government my purposes to visit Turkey? definitely not, I was there simply for leisure why should I being scared of being monitored? let alone they were monitor me or any other specific tourists, their presence there were simply to protect all of us in case of emergency. Were those SWAT police to monitor every audience attending Trump's campagin rally or to protect Trump and most of ppl's safety in cases of emergency just like the shooting incident?
I would understand why there are many police personnel patrolling since China opened visa free to many western countries to allow westerners to witness the real China themselves, that China is not what the western media portrayed. I know you guys are genuine travellers as I have watched many of your travels to other Asian countries but China needed to play safe with more western visitors coming and given the current geopolitical tensions, China wants the world to see the real China with minimum "issues" if you know what I mean.

Let try a bit of reasoning for the omnipresence of security cameras: public safety is indirectly enforced and the evidence is the presence of all citizens, especially the kids, every where! Simply consider this: In L9ndon public squares, would you let your kids play wherever they wish? I rest my case !
