My immediate thought when I saw the staining on chassis was nicotine. Snip the wires to motor on both drives and solder them back together then heat shrink them to allow swapping the JST connector
@@DreStyle In today's world, this is unseen and odd, but for those of us from eons ago, this is ... normal. You'd pop open a pc from the 90's it was all like that. Every surface, every chip, everything. You'd have to dip entire boards in mystery sauce to clean it. Horrible addiction and it cost them thousands of dollars per year in some cases. I personally knew someone who had to replace electronics in his house every few years because they couldn't stand up to the nicotine + dust combo. Neither did his body in the end.
Joey. Only recently found your channel. I always take my hat off to anyone who posts video's of fails. HOWEVER, you have NOT failed at all. You succeeded in proving it could not be repaired by you. There is a difference. One is giving up. One is trying. And you have learned. It is an expensive lesson, but my experience of 99% of ebay items is that they are either worse than skip finds, or are incorrectly described. Be very cautious of anything described as "untested". But best wishes, keep going and thanks for posting!
To be honest I find it more exciting to see your tries and fails than the 'normal' repair videos. This just seems more real and honest. And hey, you also make money from the videos, don't you? You have at least 20600 subscribers! .. and a Sponsor!
The last one can be fixed. Buy the same model board is an option. Another option is to swap connectors. The pins (wires) can be removed from the connector. There are small lock that that holds the pin in the connector. So if the pins inside are the same you just need to swap the connector.
yep, also can test voltages for pos , neg.. if there's a third it's prob sense line.. which.. is optional. So .. even if not swapping pins.. can prob just nothing else solder into other connector leave third off(sense).
2 wire fans, either run full tilt, or voltage variable. 3 wire, uses sense wire to try to detect pulse width or has rpm sensor.. 4 wire has control wire and sense wire, for better more precise mgmnt. just depends on the controller prob, or design.
Don't feel sorry for us, we enjoy either way, it doesn't matter for us that you "failed", it's all learning! Also every bit of the video is enjoyable. The sad part is the profit only hahaha
26:30 desolder and solder the old connector pin to the new mobo. Or cut the enlarged cable and solder new fitting cable to fit that mobo connector. Idk if its possible but it looks like it would be
Love your work! Also see you have improved quite a bit since this video a year ago! I will never understand how some treat their expensive gear so poorly. I have an Xbox 1s and PS4 Pro, both purchased when they launched, and both still look like they came out of the box. Take better care of your hardware people!
Hi Joey! I think you should've checked the state of the USB ports on that PS4 as the pins might be mangled and shorting to the shielding or to each other which could cause such an issue. Good luck and I hope I catch the next live stream. ;) Cheers!
Thankyou for watching! If you want to checkout more videos from this series, here's the playlist in order 😊▶ th-cam.com/play/PLPPvwjMj29nAmcOq0Pn3zHkHxX35xfeGG.html | SPOILER for this video below I managed to get another PS5 Disc Drive with the correct socket, and I have the exact same issue. I've also tried a new front eject and power button board (in case the button was stuck or jammed) however same issue. I believe the problem is one of the following: 1. Original disc drive wasn't included, meaning the chip to pair them is gone (meaning console is bricked) 2. Main motherboard on the PS5 has an issue with it 3. I didn't put the Southbridge on correctly 4. Somethings gone wrong on the disc drive board itself Comment on this comment with which one you think it might be 😊😊
I know nothing about any gaming systems, so this may be a dumb question but if the board and disk drive are paired have you tried to unplug the drive to see the results. Also, I may have missed it, but I have you taken it down to the point where you can test all power rails and components? It is tedious work but good experience if you haven't done anything like that before. I like your videos where you are keeping track of initial cost, expense, and if it is sellable or not.
For PS 4, Joey, it may not help but with the large amount of dirt and dust, there is a remote possibility that there is a short somewhere in the system. Also, with the drive spinning and not stopping and not sounding well. I would clean the drive or disconnect it and boot. A good clean can't hurt.
Love this video! Yes too bad was was a loss till now but you've shown a lot of skill replacing all parts and trying to fix so well done for that. I also have two broken ps4's here with the same problem as yours still have not found a solution for them. I you revisit this ps4 i'm hoping you'll find a solution. Great content Joey 👍🏻
If it's just that 1 small connector that is different on the 2 bluray drives you can cut the wires a couple of inches up from the connector and join them on the other drive to test
@1:02 Did someone took a dump in the Ethernet port or is that tar? 😁 Said that, excessive dirt and dust can cause shorts or alter "signals" (due to added resistance). I'd start by cleaning that PS4 board, you may get lucky.
That sounds like a drive with gears that are not aligned properly. I haven't seen it in a while but when I repaired PC's that happened a bit, someone shoves a disc in and it keeps spitting the disc/tray back out. When there's no disc it's always trying to eject it. It could be the sensor that detects the presence of a disc as well.
The joys of PlayStations every daughter board is tied to the mainboard, one fails and it can't update. And there is many types of drives and revisions to find a replacement drive.
Often with connectors like the one between the optical drive and its board, the wires lock in to the plug and by pressing a small metal release on the plug you can unlock them, pull the wires out of the plug and then push them into another plug, no soldering or electrical tape required. :P
Cut the motor wires about 10cm above the plug on both disc drives and solder the plug wires from the working disc drive to plug wires for the motherboard. Problem solved no? Or am I missing something.
When you try to update the system is the disc drive connected or not? Just connect it, update and sell it as a digital. If the drive is hooked up and it's failing to update I'd say the drive board is bad.
You should make this a new series, but on episode one you should give yourself a starting budget of let’s say £10 or £20 and that covers whatever you buy plus repairs. Then episode 2 you use the remaining balance plus profits from episode 1 and build it that way. Would be fun to watch the progress
Most things that are sold on eBay (or elsewhere) "for parts", which have already been taken apart before, are because the thing is faulty and is beyond economic repair. Really not worth buying said lots.
Oh no! So much work, such a great job and then? Faultyy Disc Drive.. I feel so sorry.. nevertheless it was a great and interesting video. Cheers and happy Easter!
I used to repair PS3 blu-ray drives. If the alignment was out on the drive loading mechanism, it would cause all sorts of issues such as the one you've had - the drive making a loading sound on startup without a disc being present and not reading discs. My thought process is that the console suddenly failed and the owner or previous repairer removed the disc that was loaded (most likely FIFA) and reassembled without resetting the mechanism. I would double check this. I don't have a huge amount of experience on the PS5, so I can't comment on why it's not updating. Other cause for concern would be logic board for the drive has failed or isn't the correct paired one.
I had the same problem w my ps4. Everything was in good condition, but same outcome with the light and the button. Changing the battery, and shorting the battery socket + and - for 10sec(remove the battery and shorting the contacts) fixed the problem. Booted into safe mode and saw that the system was corrupted. Therefore, concluded the system broke, and the last user tried turning it on and off couple of times, bricking the "check" sequence. Maybe this info will help you. L is for learning.

Enjoying your vids! Can't you just snip that cable from the disc drive and solder to a cable that has the correct connector? The replacement disc drive board looks like it's JST-PH 2-pin 2.0mm and the original looks possibly like it's JST-SH 2-pin 1.0mm (difficult to fully tell without measuring) Worst comes to worst, you can remove the original connector block and just solder straight to the terminals on the disc drive board?
