I picked up a 96 Ford 4x4 1 ton pick-up truck at an auction in Chicago for 900.00 U.S. Just wanted the motor. 460 big block I brought a trailer, but before loaded it. I put a battery in it to see if I could drive it on the trailer. Turned the key on, and the odometer had less than 1500 miles on it. Around 2400 kilometers for you Aussie's. Did believe it, so I went found the guy that owned the lot. He said my truck was an old City of Chicago truck that they used for one season to plow snow. Then they parked in a garage for 12 years. I did not drive it on trailer. Didn't even try, and start it. When I got it home. I replaced the brake lines, gas lines, put some oil down cylinders and let it sit for day before I turned it over. Fired right up, and went down the road like a brand new truck, because it was. Ended up selling it two weeks later for $15,000
I bought my 351ci, single rail XD ex NSW police car from a police auction, paid $60] as it had been stolen, used in a police chase and dumped. All it needed to move was a battery, 3 tires and a jimmied steering lock. Later spent nearly 4 years restoring it with many NOS parts i came across from western NSW Ford dealers in the late 90's early 00's

In my country this was long ago stopped, because basically the flippers came in, all 'good' finds somehow lost their ECU fuse or fuel pump relay and they were picked up for cheap. Then they found cops intentionally taking _specific_ cars off the road and buying them for themselves (in the name of a family member ofc) :D
I'd say the majority of these cars are insurance write-offs either from theft recoveries or accident damage - the rest appear to have belonged to people living in them.
Went to this auction 5 years ago. Picked up 1 ls statesman $1200 1 VT Ss iron lion 5 speed for $800 1 v6 triton $300 and a L series subie for $375 all delivered for an extra $300 just can’t get the deals anymore at this auction.
if its anything like north queensland, all the scrap yards are owned by overseas types, buy EVERYTHING, then they rip out engines, boxes etc and ship it overseas. damn near impossible to go down the wreckers and grab a part these days.

There's also a paddock in central Vic that has about 30-40 pre 90's Toyota's sitting on it, I once asked if any were for sale and got a firm no, the owner ships them back to Japan for huge $$$ apparently

Here in Darwin we get all the backpackers going back home who just dump/abandon their vehicles at the airport and surrounding areas. Most of those end up at auction.
This is like the yard for the Bruce Highway where they smash the car or leaves it down the side of the road highway And also Fraser Island recoveries jobs

The copper grabbed the keys out the ignition and goes "Who's the owner of this car? it's coming back as stolen" Baffled and slurring I replied "Huh, Its mine, I bought it from you's" 🤣🤣🤦♂️ After what seemed like an eternity and damn near pissing myself they let us go saying "Sorry mate, bit of a mix up but shouldn't have anymore issue's"
That one Astra can be a fun little coupe just like 2sexy plus those engine's (at least here in Europe, mostly UK) are well know to take a beat and being swapped in a lot of random projects, also seen a few mini with one of those. I think project Binky also has used this same engine
Astras in Australia have larger motors in them...smallest was 1.8, middle was 2.0 and largest was 2.2 litre. So not sure now good the engines were...they don't really have a good reputation here too.

Pre-COVID, Melbourne airport would get either Pickles or Manheim to auction off the cars that had been dumped at the airport by backpackers/students/people who had to leave the country. There would be the occasional tasty car from that last category....
Oman I would be spending a lot there with that VE Commodore just to get the front end. And the air bag!! Lol love to completely swap my G8 over.. plus I would be grabbing a bunch of the Holden badges

We had a 17 year old '05 Nissan X-trail at home, it's a complete write off now, but I used to drive it for back when i was practicing for my Ls and Ps and later on my sister used to daily drive until she ended up indirectly involved in a terrible car accident, luckily the airbags did deploy sucessfully, she survived, just barely with a few broken bones, fractures on her wrist and forearm, in serious pain, was immediately taken to hospital by paramedics, had to be admistered with morphine, it was that painful and had to have an operation, the good news is that she is alive, was not at fault, some absolute genius on the road decided to pull out and then stopped right infront of her, she tried to swerve away to avoid colliding with the driver, but it was too late the other driver as they stopped, clipped her side which upon impact sent her veering into the oncoming, crashed into an oncoming vehicle, although the traffic in the oncoming wasn't travelling at speed, was slowing down to stop for a redlight, investigation is still on going and the driver who pulled out is confirmed to be at fault, not only by admitting, however is still refusing to give correct details of the vehicles registration, my father looked up the plates and rego, nothing came up, so that guy involved at the time probably lied to authorities and to my father, as my dad tried to contact the other party involved to confirm details and finalise the claim. I am glad she and everyone else is okay, I'm also grateful that she is still with us, as for the car, we had a damn good run, but it's time to say good bye to the little troopper.
You can bet that if someone who is in the little group and knows the right handshake owned one of those cars and "got caught hooning" their car wouldn't be stolen by those wonderful cops who were protecting the pavement from that dangerous rubber.
that uzj100 would have been a good buy if you got it cheap. Just needed a clean, it had leather seats, and some new glass and you'd have an awesome daily for cheap as. I daily my UZJ100 it's the best vehicle ever made, and I've owned a shit load, including a 200 series turbo diesel which was an absolute dog

It's a 5.4L V8, 290 is not ci or HP it's in kilowatts, it's nearly 400hp.
It's the same engine that's in a Lincoln Navigator in the 2000s. They are physically huge.
