  • John Deere Deck Removal on a LA145. How to remove a John Deere Mower deck quickly and safely. This process applies to all L series John Deere tractors and mowers. Please subscribe & will get updates as I drop more repair videos, I plan on having a complete repair guide to L Series Deere Mowers.
    UPDATE: When lowering the deck place a 2x4 under each side of the deck. This takes the tension off the deck holders and will save your fingers when dropping the deck off!

    Thanks a lot man! As much as I know about small engines and such I’ve never had to take off a deck lol. And a customer of mine has a LA140 with a bad Hydraulic belt. And I’ve never replaced one of those on a Johndeer either. But with your two videos and the exact size tools and steps to go bye it will be a breeze to do this week! Thanks again!

    Thank you very much for this video! I've never removed the mower deck myself until this afternoon... and thanks to your video, I knew how! Fantastic work! Great video! Thank you, thank you!

      Glad it helped, removing the deck is just getting you started. You will be replacing spindles and pinion gears before ya know it.

      @@MowerMike That is exactly why I needed to remove the deck!! The steering sector gear and the pinion gear were both stripped, and the machine would not turn to the right anymore. For years and years, I'd always just send this to our local JD dealer for repair... but like everyplace else, the repair cost have gone through the roof and they're not able to even get it in for service until sometime in November! So, I tackled the repair myself this weekend, and thanks to your video (and another TH-camr's video on replacing the sector gear and pinion), it's working great now! Thanks again!

    Hold the phone... When you removed the two rear hangers, ( the ones shaped like a letter "P") the one on the left side of the deck was installed incorrectly. The straight side of the shaft from the deck to the loop should always be facing the front of the tractor on both sides. Otherwise, your deck is hanging slightly out of square to the tractor. Also, the proper way to take tension off the deck is to place a 2x4 on each side of the deck and then lower the adjustment lever until the deck is resting on the wood. Tip about using the tension idler to get belt tension is valid. Pin on the front hanger was missing the washer. Looks like the front rod was also missing one of the half round centering spacers. FWIW, and as stupid as the design is, the front bracket that the deck hangs from is a pre-bent piece of steel that hides the axle grease zerk fitting. Most owners don't even know it is there, and if they do soon learn that part is bolted to the frame using the axle bolt. If you do not grease the axle on a somewhat regular basis, replacement of the bushings and axle will run you just over $180.00 in parts alone. On the positive side, the the front deck bracket has gone through several revisions. The original part cost about $16.00. The replacement (new & improved) only costs $6.00. If your deck is older and you have slammed it into solid objects a couple of times, or if you can not adjust the front adjusting nut and get any change in the front deck height, your bracket is probably cracked or bent and with the deck off is a great time to replace the bracket with the new style. If you choose to do that, either block the front wheels up or put horses under the front axle. Never trust a jack to lift anything you can't bench press off your chest. Ditto on jacking the rear axle off the ground!

      Wow thanks for the detailed reply. I agree I should have used a 2x4 under the deck to make it easier. I will use that in my next deck removal video. And excellent safety tip on the Jack.
      Do you know the part number of the new front brace that you mention? I looked all over and couldn’t find one. I think mine is bent out of shape and not allowing me to properly level the deck.

      @@MowerMike The original bracket is GX21901BLE $15.06 The revised one is GX25584 and only costs $5.06. For a few bucks extra, I would also replace the Front Draft rod GX20497 $16.42 If you leave this video up, PLEASE modify the description to reflect the errors so others don't install their stuff wrong. Or pin my original post to the top.

      I really appreciate the info. I will get one on order and probably do a whole new video on the bracket change and deck leveling. Using a 2x4 this time that is lol. Thanks again

      One question for you I see on Amazon they sell a John Deere equipment ball part #M112982 with that bracket. Do you know if this is supposed to be behind the nut that adjusts the front of the deck?

    • @Rags722
      @Rags722 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MowerMike The ball part goes flat side against the nut, the ball settles in the hole in the bracket and allows the full assembly to move depending on the deck height.

    I have a JD LA145 mower. Issue won’t pull me up the hill and burning rubber smell and smoke coming from the front under the engine. My wife weighs 100lbs less than me and it pulls her up the but slow.
    I replaced a well worn drive belt, ensured no yard debris in the way of brake movement. The drive rotates but the belt doesn’t with me on it…I assume that’s the reason for the smell and smoke The belt seems tight when brake is not engaged.
    Any thoughts???
    Thank you.

      I would take the belt off one of the pullies and hand turn all the pullies and see if any are rough and replace them. Also check your tensioner spring and make sure it is tight.

    Well, you almost showed us the easiest way...hint, a set of needle nose pliers would work so much easier on those slider pins and safer than the screwdriver method but good video overall

    • @MowerMike
      @MowerMike  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh we have to disagree there. I use the screwdriver because it gives me way more leverage on the pin than pliers. Glad you liked the video

    Thanks man! Great tips! So my only question... is there any tips for putting the pins back in? Do you have a vid on that? Thanks!
