Best explanation I have seen on why the deck does not cut evenly. Especially since this is the deck I just replaced after 12 years. One tip on this deck if you have to replace it, it is cheaper to buy a complete deck through sales ($900), rather than a bare deck through parts ($1100).

Been having this issue with my Husqvarna and now I know what needs to be done, because I’ve replaced the spindles and blades and it still cut uneven and after watching this video I check where the blades meet and boom figured out my deck was bent. Thank you guys for this great video
Thanks to my lawn mower angel! JSE now I have one less question....neither the actual problem nor the fix is intuitive. I jacked my mower up the other day and the blades looked fine, as much as I can see. It's a seriously old Craftsman and as you know getting the deck off that thing is a pain in the butt. I had smacked into a protruding tree root that I thought I had taken care of. Boing! Got untangled and the mower cuts uneven forevermore. I never woulda figgered out the problem. Very sneaky! Your video sorta floated to the top this morning and ya just musta nailed it. Wonky deck. Wow!!! Thanks JSE! Ya done good! Your fan over in Alabam, Norm
Lots of helpful information. Fortunately, I haven't had that problem. I have had decks get weak from rust. Cut it out, and weld new metal back in. Works fine.
One of my kids hit a stump and bent the end of one blade 90 degrees. Put new blades on and I’m getting about an 8 inch strip that’s high. This is definitely going to be my issue and you gave me the fix. Thanks
I'm glad it was helpful. When you take ther deck off, make sure you spin the blade shaft to make sure the shaft is not bent. A 90 degree bend is a bad hit. I'm sure you will need the "deck adjustment" in this video but also make sure your blade shaft is ok. If it is bent It may be easier to replace the entire hub bit it depends on what you think.
Excellent information and instructions. I am having the same problem. Now I know how to find and fix this without replacing the deck. Thank you very much sir I appreciate it.

This was my favourite video on the subject, I flipped my deck over and one side of the blade was even with the other then the other side of the blade was over an inch higher. This proved it wasn't the deck or spindle and just a badly.bent blade. I hit a paver that was on my lawn a while back
Funny you mentioned that. I have a Cub Cadet with the same issue, both blades line up in the middle, same height, but if I spin the blade on the chute side 180 degrees it's a little lower than the other blade. If I spin it again 180 degrees it lines up. So it has to be the blade. If the deck was bent the blade would still be lower (out of alignment) even after spinning it 180 degrees and it wouldn't fluctuate in height like that. If the spindle was bent the height may fluctuate but most likely go from too high to too low on each 180 turn. Not lined up and then low. I replaced the blade and the new one does the same thing. I'm thinking the blade on that side is bowing a bit when I tighten the bolt. Nothing else makes sense. The cut looks fine so I'm not going to worry about it. I never hit anything that would bend the deck or spindle. I had an older mower that definitely had a bent spindle and deck at one point and the blades would never line up when I swung them 180 degrees, they remained equally out of alignment, until I replaced the spindle and fixed the deck.
I’m the least handy person on earth and trying to fix that…. I watch a ton of videos. You are great at talking it through. Felt like a buddy just giving me the run down. Keep it up!
Really smart and great job! Never ran into the slap 🔨 hammer before and just ordered one. Have a Kioti tractor with 4 foot tires on the back, and this tool should be able to break the bead if needed. Nice work 👍 and thank you! 😄
Excellent video, I just cut my yard with a used Husky and got the Mohawk down the center. The blades look pretty rough so I’m hoping that’s the problem. If not I know where to go next.👍🏼👍🏼

Good video and to the point. Most owners don't have the know how on why you do not move the wheels. Every tractor I receive the wheels are totally to high. I try to explain to them that they are set for a reason and not to cut the lawn so low. I did want to mention on one of your other videos that I did watch a few times incase I missed something. I was stumped on the Husqvarna zero turn that has the parking brake within the laterals. I tried each time and cleaned up all the relays thinking that was the culprit. I replaced the solenoid, ignition switch, checked all the wiring for breaks, anyway I don't know if you can make a edit to that video to let others know about the occupant relay within the harness under the control panel. I decided to move that relay since it had the same color coded wires as the parking brake relays. The tractor started, but would not start again, but the relay became very hot real quick. I found one on line and installed it and still had no call back from the customer. I don't suppose that you have a video on a troy bilt tractor that won't stop moving forward unless I turn the ignition off? I have set the brake but still won't stop. I may have to put on a stand and see the wheels in the back after pressing the pedal and see what's going on. I hope it's not the tranny.
I have the same JD 42" deck. The crossbar under the discharge chute broke off, it slammed into the right blade, are now the cut is messy. Of course the stability of the entire deck is also compromised. Nonetheless, this video was a major education, starting with the blocks and the level pully analysis. Anything can be fixed. Thank you!

Thanks Tony, I see this more than you would think. Most of the time it is from the cap on a water pipe or sewer pipe or stumps that grow in the yard, LOL
My son hit something with the cub cadet and not only did it bend the deck but it cracked the corner of the spindle. For the life of me I could not get it to cut even until I remove the spindle and saw the bent deck. I used a small air hammer and a heavy duty mallet with a piece of wood and it worked. Wish I would have seen yours earlier

Genius!!! The kind of knowledge you have only comes from experience, that and you have a good eye and sharp instincts. All of this together is what we call talent. Along the way you've discovered things you'd never find in any repair manual, you ought to be writing them down and one day write a book. Your other talent is the way you explain things, you are a very articulate and effective communicator. I don't think you understand the value of what you know and what you do. I can tell you love what you do but one day your body will tell you it's had enough. A book such as I suggest would nicely finance your retirement. I don't know how far you went in school but you could have easily been an engineer. The men who built America didn't just attend the finest polytechs but were also blest with a gift for whatever engineering discipline they were schooled in. Today we call that thinking outside of the box, you may not know it but that is what you do. It behooves you to share this but there's no reason why you shouldn't profit from it. Every year that passes the floor is a little further away and a little colder, your knees will be the first to let you know. When that time comes, write that book. Kudos
I cut my yard and walking trails for 20 years with a STX-38. I got a new S240 and the first time around the yard I hit a root. Bent the blade and the deck. My brother in law had a Bolens and got the S240 too. First time around the yard, he hit a stump and bent the blade and deck. We both had mowed our yards the previous week without. I continued to hit stuff I never hit before. I replaced the deck cause I had bent it back into shape so many times the metal got fatigued and wouldn't stay straight. I got a Accel deck and the first time out I hit a root. It stuck so hard in the root I had to pull it off with my truck. And it bent the blades and deck. This deck is heavier and harder to bend back. A few weeks later I hit a stump and really bent the blades and deck. I am tired of buying blades and pounding on the deck. And I need a bigger hammer now. I never bent a blade on the old STX 38. I bent the hell out of the deck (Black deck) over the years hitting stumps rocks roots, the blades would cut holes in it when doing so, it rusted and my buddy welded it back together multiple times, we beefed up the parts that would bend. I was working on the STX as I still use it and noticed the blades are tucked up inside the deck quit a ways. HMMMM The blades on the new JD's are almost level with the bottom edge of the deck. Could this be why I used to bend the front of my old mower's deck and not the blades and deck, and now hit shit with my blades and consequently bend the deck??? I think it is a design flaw. When I bend my deck back I use a chunk of wood on the opposite side of the hole cause it looks like it is bent all the way through. One side down and the other goes up.
Thanks. I have a pretty serious bend happening somewhere. I need some of those anti scalp wheels as well. I don't have those. I really hope this channel does well and you can get a modular adapter for your arm so you can attach a bunch of different tools to it. Not only would that be totally awesome, it would definitely draw in a ton of views xD Good luck!
I got a bad uneven cut and I suspect something along these lines. I just replaced the spindles and it does look like one is a little wonky when I spin it. I might have hit something but who knows. Good advice here and another tip to add to my toolkit. Before we owned acreage I only ever needed a pushmower. Now I'm changing blades, and spindles, leveling the deck, changing belts, and I'm sure more things to come. It's frustrating when this happens but it's a nice feeling to fix it. 😅
Thank you for the blade tip. I never really paid that much attention to them before. I guess I can check My deck by measuring it to see if it's level on all sides. I hit a root with the edge of my deck, But I see no difference with the grass after mowing. Great job as always, I almost always learn something or am reminded of something. So thanks again.
Hi Steve, You most likely did not hurt your mower deck when hitting the root. It takes a good hit and most of the time the tractor will stop dead in its tracks when the deck get bent. Thank you for commenting!!

Thanks buddy, makes diagnosing my issue a bit easier. I haven't identified if the blades are bent yet but I hadn't considered the deck being bent but considering I have had nothing but trouble with my troybilt pony (2019) I wouldn't be surprised. I gotta pop the deck of to replace the spindle brakes (yes they are already trashed, along with deck engagement cable broken the idler pulley broke free from the deck... due to vibration from one of the spindle bearings not having a tight/press fit in on of the spindles causing vibration that lead to the pulley guards cracking) I will likely replace both spindles and blades ( I used some sleeve retainer compound in the interim to keep the spindle from vibrating as bad) Anyways... My old MTD mower will be put back into service if I find a suitable engine since MTD has always been built to a price but sheesh I wouldn't wish one of these things on my worst enemy. And to think I was concerned about the Chinese engine being a problem LOL

Hello sir just seen this video. Now I can go and check my deck out too. I,ve seen your deck leveling videoand got that procedure down. Thinking that the deck was uneven, now tomorrow I'll take my deck off and see if it's bent. Great video!!!
Great idea only thing I would do is warm the paint up with a heat gun so it doesn't get pinched and form rust where it was hit by pinching the paint you break the bond to the metal ... I rebuild my JD deck this past summer and never thought of this but I was lucky it wasn't bent I did replace the blades because they were finished almost worn through where they turn upward behind the cutting edge from just lightly grazing soil on a steep hill that I now landscaped to feather it out so it's not as bad...

My deck was bent on the leading edge of the right side. The blade does not strike the deck and it mows but looks terrible. How do you fix a leading edge damaged deck?
I cannot say how to repair what you are calling " leading edge damaged deck" I am a visual person and would need to see the mower deck to figure out the best way to straighten it. It should not matter what the mower deck looks like. If the blades are coming across together evenly, the tire pressure are all correct and the mower deck is leveled correctly. You should get a good cut.

A few weeks ago I hit a rock with my X350 w/42" Accel deck and knocked a chunk off of one of my blades. I bought a new set and now the blades ends are hitting each other! I took off the deck and nothing seemed out of the ordinary to me, the spindles are tight. I priced a new deck and they only sell the shell by itself and it's like $600-$700! Last night I was debating maybe to just buy 2 new spindles and if that doesn't fix it I can move onto a new shell. After watching this video I'm going to work on checking the pulleys to see if they're misaligned. If you don't have a "slap hammer", can you just use a small sledge and a block of wood?

It's a seriously old Craftsman and as you know getting the deck off that thing is a pain in the butt. I had smacked into a protruding tree root that I thought I had taken care of. Boing! Got untangled and the mower cuts uneven forevermore. I never woulda figgered out the problem. Very sneaky! Your video sorta floated to the top this morning and ya just musta nailed it. Wonky deck. Wow!!! Thanks JSE! Ya done good!
Your fan over in Alabam,
Norm
I’m glad this video helped answer a question or two for you! Thank you for watching and the kind comment.

Keep it up!
Thanks Ryan, I'm glad my videos are easy to follow. Thank you for watching and the kind comment. I will keep them coming!!
Excellent video tutorial! You taught an old dog a new trick! Thank you right on my birthday!
Happy birthday!
Very interesting 2 thumbs up on this video. Great advise on taking spindle out before the frame straightening. Excellent work.

Really smart and great job! Never ran into the slap 🔨 hammer before and just ordered one. Have a Kioti tractor with 4 foot tires on the back, and this tool should be able to break the bead if needed. Nice work 👍 and thank you! 😄
I'm glad this was helpful and thank you for the kind comment. The slide hamm a nice addition to have for multiple reasons as you stated!
That was amazing! I would have never suspected a bent deck... Good job!

Excellent video, I just cut my yard with a used Husky and got the Mohawk down the center. The blades look pretty rough so I’m hoping that’s the problem. If not I know where to go next.👍🏼👍🏼
Excellent video!! I was surprised how easily and quickly you could bent it back. Good job. Thanks.

Loved my little john deere. Its older than dirt but kept going until recently. Replaced all the belts, serviced it and all. 2 weekends of broken springs, thrown belts and lack of patts availability i gsve up and bought a new mower. 54 inch deck makes quick work compared to the little 38.
Very clear and concise. Just subscribed!

Thank you!
Thank you for your time the best explanation on these lawnmowers and why they don’t cut even thank you very much

Great job! He must have hit something really hard to bend the deck that bad! Thanks! 👍👍
Thank you very much and I have learned a lot, you are awesome man. Excellent teacher and demonstrator. Amazing how you solve issues with one hand, May God bless you Sir. Thanks a million.

Kudos
Thank you for the very kind comment.

Great work you are very good
Thank you for the kind words William. :)
Thanks. I have a pretty serious bend happening somewhere. I need some of those anti scalp wheels as well. I don't have those.
I really hope this channel does well and you can get a modular adapter for your arm so you can attach a bunch of different tools to it. Not only would that be totally awesome, it would definitely draw in a ton of views xD
Good luck!
John Deere makes
reenforing ring to bolt to top of the
deck.
Great video! Now I have a plan for this weekend to try and fix my uneven cut issue.
Awesome! I call it a slide hammer.
I have hit so many things with our mower and really need to do this.

Thanks!,never thought about the deck being bent.
It does happen. It is not a easy repair but it is cheaper than buying a new mower deck!
Thanks buddy, makes diagnosing my issue a bit easier. I haven't identified if the blades are bent yet but I hadn't considered the deck being bent but considering I have had nothing but trouble with my troybilt pony (2019) I wouldn't be surprised. I gotta pop the deck of to replace the spindle brakes (yes they are already trashed, along with deck engagement cable broken the idler pulley broke free from the deck... due to vibration from one of the spindle bearings not having a tight/press fit in on of the spindles causing vibration that lead to the pulley guards cracking)
I will likely replace both spindles and blades ( I used some sleeve retainer compound in the interim to keep the spindle from vibrating as bad)
Anyways... My old MTD mower will be put back into service if I find a suitable engine since MTD has always been built to a price but sheesh I wouldn't wish one of these things on my worst enemy.
And to think I was concerned about the Chinese engine being a problem LOL

Top of the deck is warp,we had the same problem with ours John Deer, the top of the deck where the bearing towers mount get warp, makes the blade underneath cut at a angle
I use a short level when I straighten the deck around the pulley's
I'm not real sure, but may be able to be crafty and use some washers on the spindles to get it back close. However I do like your fix and your work. Thanks for the video!
Thanks for watching and sharing. What ever works!! It will save many $$$ not having to purchase a new mower deck.
This is a great, useful video. We have a LA105 and getting an uneven cut. I checked tire pressure and leveled the deck but, still a bit uneven.

Hi Marco, I'm glad it was helpful. Thank you for the kind comment and for supporting the channel!
Simple and very effective.
Thank you.

Another great informative video. You must have known that I also had a bent deck. Thank You Again. ❤❤❤❤❤👍👍👍👍👍👀😎
I’m hope you can get your deck straightened out. Check out my how to on leveling the mower deck after you straighten it. Don’t forget to check the blade shafts to make sure they are not bent.
Very informative. How are blades to be position, both at 12 and 6 or one at 12 and 6 with the other blade at 9 and 3?
It does not matter which way you put the blades on as far as positioning. They are not timed and will not hit each other.
Very nice video….to the point with great shots of what to look for. The video guys gets a call-out on his work. Great explaination and really great instruction.
With the spindle bolted down it makes the shell more rigid. So by pulling the spindle that makes the shell more bendable
Great video; extremely helpful!

Any suggestions would b appreciated it runs and mows but unevenly any expert advice u can give this shade tree mechanic would b appreciated

@@JohnsonsSmallEngines Heck, I was impressed. Liked and subscribed young man!
Rookie Question: what does the actual bending on the deck? Force of the pulley on the jammed blade?
I think a combination of mower moving forward then hitting something that stops the blade then momentum of tractor moving bends the deck.
Very helpful. Thanks brother man.

Amen to taking spindle housing off 1st. Good advice...nothing like busting a corner out and destroying housing🙄
Hi Lori, I learned the hard way LOL.
Good work, never seen these done before.
Hi Tom, thank you for watching and commenting. It is fun but better than buying a new mower deck!
Awesome video. I just happen to have one of those old bead breakers.

Absolutely. at this point, you can use whatever you need to straighten the deck!
Great job with slap hammer
Hi William, It may not be pretty but it works well!
