Top guy. I went with my old man and saw him perform the rock show with a bunch of young kids. When he was finished he stood around and chatted to everyone, and I bought him a crown larger and me and the old man stood there having a beer with him. I had a CD I wanted signed and started out of habit telling him to spell my name and he said he had a son with the same name and he had it down, haha. Top guy, he almost accepted no credit for the performance and praised the young guys there. Total legend.
John was definitely not underrated. He is rated the greatest voice ever to land on our shores. I heard him live back in 1976 and I still get goose bumps thinking about that night. His voice would explode through you like ya had been hit by lightning. OH, incredible power, ya whole body just shook and is still shaking I think. If ya know of a more powerful voice please leave a comment, AMAZING
I saw Jon English 3 times at different shows and this was always the most requested encore. He always played it and it was fabulous each time, my favourite English song. I met him after each show and he signed CDs and spoke to people and was just a genuinely nice person. He is missed, his music was sensational.
I’ve loved Jon so much since 1979 and still do. I lived my childhood in Kangasniemi, Finland and my older sister gave me Jon’s casette as a Christmast present and I was the happiest girl for a long long time. I so much miss Jon 🤗🇳🇿🇫🇮
Ran into Jon going into Coles Merthyr 2000. He's as mysterious as this haunting song. The narrative is brilliant and he enunciates the vocals so clearly. 💋♥️😢
Jon was a great man he was excellent in singing and as a actor while he sang you believed that he was singing as if he was the one that he was singing about I just miss him so much

Great version yes. Bob Seger wrote it and first preformed it. Don’t get me wrong I am not trying to belittle A great Australian performer but you must give credit to the song writer.
@@jamesappleyard4529 I think you have your wires crossed. Bob Seger neither wrote nor performed “Hollywood Seven”. It was written by Gloria Sklerov and Harry Lloyd. Jon English did record a cover version of Bob Seger’s “Turn the Page”, but apart the word “Omaha” in the lyrics, it was a completely different song.
@@jamesappleyard4529 All good mate, I can understand the confusion. Another interesting link between the 2 artists was the title “Against The Wind”, being an excellent song by Bob Seger and the title of a mini-series starring Jon English (its theme song being another excellent song “Six Ribbons”, also by Jon E.) Cheers 🍻
I was waiting for a bus one night in Brisbane outside what is now Qpac. Would have been back in '80s. A cab pulled up and out pops Jon English. I stood gaping and he smiled and said hello as he strode past. IIRC he was playing in The Pirates of Penzance.

Just saw Vicki Lawrence perform this on a 1977 episode of "The Carol Burnett Show" Interesting hearing it sung by and thinking of it from a woman's perspective.

Met him in Tauranga, New Zealand, when I was 19. Such a great guy. Loved watching “Against the Wind” too. Wonderful memories.

So strange...reading the book about his life and googling all his music ❤️ though in this clip tho I love the song...reminds me of a ‘Wiggle’ 😜🤩
That hair !!!!
She came in one night from Omaha, worn out
She never could sleep on trains, took the bus to Hollywood
Lookin' for a room in the pourin' rain
With hair so blonde and eyes so brown
She thought she'd take this town and turn it upside down
And me-ee, I was livin' in a hotel just off Sunset
She moved in across the hall
And she said she'd be a movie star-are-are
And waited every mornin' for a ca-all
So I asked her in just to have a little drink but she hardly had the time
A call might come tomorrow, she got to learn her li-ines
On Hollywood Seven, rooms to rent, till your name goes up in lights
Woh-oh, Hollywood Seven, dream your dream - seven bucks a night
And then the months went by without a job
The money that she saved was nearly spent
So she started bringin' strangers home
Just tryin' to find a way to pay the rent
And she'd sit down and drink my coffee, got nothin' much to say-ay
Just busy rehearsin' in her mind the scene she'd never play-ay
On Hollywood Seven, rooms to rent, till your name goes up in lights
Woh-oh, Hollywood Seven, dream your dreams for seven bucks a night
I found her there one mornin'
She didn't co-ome for coffee when I called
She'd gone and brought the wrong one home this time
There were crazy lipstick marks all over the wall
Now she's goin' back to Omaha but not the way she'd pla-anned
There'll be no crowd to cheer her on, no welcome home, no ba-and
On Hollywood Seven, rooms to rent, till your name goes up in lights
Hollywood Seven, dream your dream for seven bucks a night
She came in one night from Syracuse, tired from sleepin' o-on the plane
Took a cab to Hollywood, dreamin' of the lights,

OK, that's half the song, where are the other two verses?

Too much echo
