I’d personally choose 1. Honda CR-V 2. Mazda CX-5 3. Hyundai Tucson 4. Kia Sportage 5. Subaru Legacy 6. Nissan Rouge Over Jeep, Ford, Chevy and VW. I would add Toyota RAV4 to my list but I already own a 2016 SE. I would probably choose it in between Mazda and Hyundai though.
I tend to agree. I would pay a drop over $30,000 for any of them and that's with every feature offered tacked on. And the VW will be super cheap in 8 months once they start offering low mileage certified deals.
reading the comments below and everyone hating on the Tiguan, but I've had several VW's never had ANY issues with any of them, drove the piss out of them no issues... plus tiguan 2.0t (the new one) runs on REGULAR fuel, and gets much much better mpg than its rated for. if anyone cares, i drive a 2013 tiguan 2.0t 90k and have replaced NOTHING so far, still OE brakes, tires...ect, friends got one with 221k and only did regular maintenance. I've also had several Jetta's, Passat's, and a Touareg, again with zero issues and very little to no recalls on any of them. they go farther on an oil change and are much more durable than anything else i've ever known/driven/experienced just an FYI to all VW haters out there... real world they are MUCH better than on Paper
why would I waste my time, I know what its worth. I got a great deal on it used. but black book for my 2013 is very similar to anything in its class, despite being much more powerful, having a higher towing capacity, lower cost of maintenance, and built much more solidly. Blackbook says $19,000.00 CAD fyi (worth more than other SUV's in that class btw)
The ugliness of the Tiguan and the VW’s relentless pursuit to cheat and build unreliable vehicles should have been enough to be included in the bottom three. Frankly, I’ll take any of the bottom three SUVs over the Tiguan.
One thing about the Honda, whats up with the NAV system, when I saw on the screen where it said WHERE TO and on the other side MAP, I remembered thats excatley what my Tom-tom's main home screen looked like, didnt know Honda used Tom-Tom's and their NAV systems........
If you want a loud ride and hear the road constantly and feel the roughness of the road in the steering wheel you always go with foreign vehicles. And VW is a money pit. Trade it in at 30,000!
You say volkswagen are bad because of the dieselgate propaganda, but the entire world knows they do great cars. Sorry but you are doing a bad judgement when criticizing VW without having one of their cars
I'm sorry but without Hyundai, Toyota and Kia, the results are skewed! All 3 of those are head and shoulders better than the ugly VW that will probably fall apart in 2 years. This comparison needs a full redo imo.
Acc0rd79, agreed. I've heard and seen too many mishaps with German and even some American cars. Toyota, Honda and Kia are safe. Not too sure about Mazda.
Well if you listened to the first 2 minutes you would get your answer the three you talk about lost last year and they haven't received a refresh or all new model.
You have no clue. The new Tiguan is made in Mexico and is night and day different from the past one. We have an American made Passat 3.6 V6 for almost 5 years and 60K miles without one issue. I know friends that have reached almost 500K on their TDIs with no major issues. Whereas my neighor's Hyundai SUV is falling apart and it only has 108K miles. He's going to be buying a new Tiguan after a test ride. He said it is far and beyond what his Hyundai is.
The tiguan is slow and has the worst mileage. I still loved my test drive though, despite the stop/start technology roughness. Worth the price and has the best warranty for those afraid of VW. We ended up buying Equinox LT
You forgot to mention the Mitsubishi Outlander and Outlander Sport. They are dependable and best value in class, even if old designs. Outlander GT has a 3rd row and V6 for the price of these 4cyl, 5 seat SUVs. The Outlander Sport can be bought fully loaded for under $25k at real world prices.
These car reviews never include long term reliability. And 40,000 miles isn't long term, 140,000 is long term. That Tiguan will start asking for your wallet to be taken out more often as the miles escalate !!!
I test drove Honda CRV, VW Tiguan, Mazda CX-5. Honda CR-V is terrible with zero power and the worse CVT transmission that feels like a long rubber band. I'm not sure why the CRV is so highly regarded. The VW Tiguan felt very sluggish and the rude was very firm. The Mazda CX-5 was def the best of the bunch. But in the end I chose the 3.6R Subaru Outback because the price diffeRential between the Mazda and the Subaru wasn't that significant plus you get midsize and arguably better AWD system.
I’ve never understood why people like Volkswagen. Especially this Tiguan. The inside is bland the gage cluster looks exactly like one that came from an ‘06 Jetta. Just wait for the interior crayon aroma, then the common clatter sound that all Volkswagen engines get just before a check engine light.
Lol say that to the hundreds of thousands of people in Europe who bought Tiguans and who have no idea what a Rav4 is given its minuscule sales number over there
Thanks for the ignorance, but what does this video have to do with Europe? This is about the American market, where Americans hate VW in general and the Tiguan in particular.
Nissan TitanWarrior It isn't a popularity test, it's a product comparison. It's a great product and, no, Americans don't "hate" the Tiguan, the past model was just overpriced.
The new Tiguan got fat and now offers a third row, has tons of space, a 6 year warranty, tons of features and by far for the cheapest price here, no wonder it won the comparaison since it has everything the american market wants
So the Tiguan won because it's larger? That's it? Seems to be the only overly positive comments that were provided. And the mpg was -6 compared to the CR-V. That's HUGE and completely inefficient for a compact CUV at 23 mpg for the Tiguan. That's horrible.
Tiguan's a big nope for me, if I'm gonna put up with a VW it'll be a Golf Sportwagen (yes, that's the official name and spelling) with a manual. Come to think of it, VW should bring in the GTI wagon.
BlazeTomBay You're judging products by their brand's past. There have been plenty of very reliable VWs and very unreliable Hondas/Toyotas. Toyota is the safest bet, though, for cheap maintenance.
MrCarGuy20 your probably right. But I trust toyota and honda with my hard earned money, never been burned by them over 15 years of ownership. 3 different car model. Reliability and cheap fix if any major repairs are needed. I'll take that over expensive audi /vw repair prices.
Congratulations car buying public. Your insistence to not buy a minivan has caused the car manufacturers to offer up less capable, less efficient and less spacious minivans...... that you can't stop buying. lol?
all 4 cylinders which ELIMINATES THEM ALL. Buy a full size Santa Fe and get a 300 HP 6. These car companies are ripping off the public with 4 cylinders (which wont last many miles) with turbo's (they last even less!). Don't fall for it.
The on screen info showed, but they didn't mention in words that CRVs combined MPG is 29, compared to 23 of the VW. Very substantial difference.
We might not all agree which one deserves to be #1.
But we can all agree on which one doesn’t deserve 1st place VW!!
My fav was the Mazda. So much so, I bought one. It's a lot of fun to drive.
jon doe Still a tin box? What did you come from?
I’d personally choose
1. Honda CR-V
2. Mazda CX-5
3. Hyundai Tucson
4. Kia Sportage
5. Subaru Legacy
6. Nissan Rouge
Over Jeep, Ford, Chevy and VW.
I would add Toyota RAV4 to my list but I already own a 2016 SE. I would probably choose it in between Mazda and Hyundai though.
$35,000? Seriously. Why not a price cap of $25,000 where all these should be priced.
Seriously! None of those cars are worth over $25,000. You don't buy a top grade economy SUV.
I tend to agree. I would pay a drop over $30,000 for any of them and that's with every feature offered tacked on. And the VW will be super cheap in 8 months once they start offering low mileage certified deals.
I’ll take the rogue for the price
jared novak The rental car?
Thanks MotorWeek. Drove them and bought the Equinox. Felt most solid and the 2.0 turbo is a lot of fun.
I'll bet today July 5 2023 you are regretting that decision
reading the comments below and everyone hating on the Tiguan, but I've had several VW's never had ANY issues with any of them, drove the piss out of them no issues... plus tiguan 2.0t (the new one) runs on REGULAR fuel, and gets much much better mpg than its rated for.

I like the Honda CR-V, Chevrolet Equinox, Nissan Rogue, Mazda CX-5, and Ford Escape, they’re aggressive.
Id happily own any of these but I would only buy it used tho.
LOL at the guitar intro & PA announcer voice in 2017...
I will take the CR-v over the Tiguan... I’m not impressed by VW... too many recalls... no thank you!
Brian Vtec Smart thinking!
I totally agree 👍🏻
But it’s only recalling diesels
The ugliness of the Tiguan and the VW’s relentless pursuit to cheat and build unreliable vehicles should have been enough to be included in the bottom three. Frankly, I’ll take any of the bottom three SUVs over the Tiguan.
Dirk McDonaldson good point

Canal Oval ripped off a teenager you should be so
Proud
Ford over chevy ANY DAY ANY TIME
I just bought a 05 Mercury Mariner for $1250 as a winter beater. That money wouldn't even pay the sales tax on one of these new ones.
Cx5 is the only one here id buy
need more hybrids and plug in hybrids. Makes so much sense in this segment.
azera55555 There is the rav4 hybrid
VW reliability... I dunno.
CRV #1 the old Tiguan had so many problems. The new one build in Mexico !!!
No rav4 hybrid ?
Is that a 7 seater Tiguan ?
I'm sorry but without Hyundai, Toyota and Kia, the results are skewed! All 3 of those are head and shoulders better than the ugly VW that will probably fall apart in 2 years. This comparison needs a full redo imo.
Acc0rd79, agreed. I've heard and seen too many mishaps with German and even some American cars. Toyota, Honda and Kia are safe. Not too sure about Mazda.
Don’t forget the interior crayon smell along with the diesel like engine clatter just before the warm glow of the check engine light.
Well if you listened to the first 2 minutes you would get your answer the three you talk about lost last year and they haven't received a refresh or all new model.
I can't say anything for the interior but the smell and the clatter are just part of owning a diesel.
You have no clue. The new Tiguan is made in Mexico and is night and day different from the past one.

"Compact SUV comparison"
>Puts the Chevy Equinox
Yesterday's midsize is today's compact and tomorrow's subcompact. Crazy isn't it?
The tiguan is slow and has the worst mileage. I still loved my test drive though, despite the stop/start technology roughness. Worth the price and has the best warranty for those afraid of VW. We ended up buying Equinox LT

You need to add the model year to your video titles
These car reviews never include long term reliability. And 40,000 miles isn't long term, 140,000 is long term. That Tiguan will start asking for your wallet to be taken out more often as the miles escalate !!!
A Scott You are correct!
Dyno Don, all of us car buffs know that German brands require more wallet reaching as the miles go on !!! Ewww !!
Got damn... $35000 cap? Why do they call these compacts? I need to be a second owner for these utes
Isn't a Jeep Cherokee the same size/price for this class?
wiibaron I know right it’s in the same class the Compass competes in a different segment
The price point doesn't make sense. $30k and below would have been better for this category of vehicle. Thats where the majority of sales are.
God do i miss the coupe fad..
Price cap of 35k?!?! That’s ABSURDN
The Rav4 is now the sales leader, so MW fail not including it. Hyundai Tucson is a great one also missed by MW.
Nobody buys the VW, so why include it?
Lol say that to the hundreds of thousands of people in Europe who bought Tiguans and who have no idea what a Rav4 is given its minuscule sales number over there
Id take the VW over Korean (Kia/Hyndai) garbage...For my money im buying a Honda, toyota, mazda.
Thanks for the ignorance, but what does this video have to do with Europe?

Okay so you're into Bland huh how about the Tiguan versus Forester
Outlander?
So the Tiguan won because it's larger? That's it? Seems to be the only overly positive comments that were provided. And the mpg was -6 compared to the CR-V. That's HUGE and completely inefficient for a compact CUV at 23 mpg for the Tiguan. That's horrible.
Wow, they're leaving out a lot of the competition...
Forester? Forester XT premium has an MSRP of 31k.. thast a hell of a compact SUV
2.0T equinox needs premium gas, so I got the 1.5T instead
Tiguan's a big nope for me, if I'm gonna put up with a VW it'll be a Golf Sportwagen (yes, that's the official name and spelling) with a manual. Come to think of it, VW should bring in the GTI wagon.
WTH?! No Subaru Forester?
Honda or Toyota all about reliability for my family.
Mazda and Subaru has a very very strong reliability record as well!
MrCarGuy20 don’t judge products by their brands past ? Tell that to people buying Bentley BMW and Rolls Royce.
GTFO. History matters
BlazeTomBay agreed. Let the haters hate. When it comes to this class Honda or Toyota really does what’s needed the best.
Seems VW has managed to get rid of its poor image very quickly...
Where's the gla250
no Forester 👎🏽
korling99 Id buy the Subaru if it was my money
I meant that Forester should have been included
korling99 who buy that anyway lol
The Forester hasn't had a major change in a long time, so they've probably driven one before.
Subaru's are rust buckets and have a terrible AWD system. My friend sold his and went back to Audis. He swore he'd never buy another one.
How does the Honda with a crappy cvt tranny beat the Mazda??
Congratulations car buying public. Your insistence to not buy a minivan has caused the car manufacturers to offer up less capable, less efficient and less spacious minivans......
that you can't stop buying.
lol?
The Jeep Compass is literally the definition of garbage... it’s hard for me to think of something positive to say about it.
Aww come on nissan is clearly the 🏆 here.
I don't think you know what "compact" means.
all 4 cylinders which ELIMINATES THEM ALL. Buy a full size Santa Fe and get a 300 HP 6. These car companies are ripping off the public with 4 cylinders (which wont last many miles) with turbo's (they last even less!). Don't fall for it.
Do you always not know what you're talking about?
VW will fall apart as soon as the warranty expires.
False
Its 2017
I would go with the Ford Escape.
you guys picked the ugliest and most boring small suv as the winner????
Ford>>>>>
Tl;dr. A bunch of pointless vehicles go head to head to see which one is the most pointless crossover of them all.
VW!!!
So we just skip the part about the Tiguan having a third row seat? That’s a strong selling point.
Haha vw is the blandest of these. I feel asleep looking at it
No Honda Hrv ?
ESCAPE
Say no to VW
👎 tiguan
VW number 1 ? Fake news!
GG VW.
Everything in this segment is going to be an endless Money Pit. All garbage engineering and parts
