    This is one of the best scenes of classic Who. The second "Why not?" was chilling. Few people really appreciate just how dark and manipulative 7 was.

      I do. For me, Doctor Who is not about doing magic with a screwdriver and shooting at the Daleks, it's something more.

    • @RopeDrink
      @RopeDrink 5 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      @Deleted - Gerbils don't talk Dalek's into committing suicide to tie up loose ends. Gerbils don't play mind-games with their enemies while orchestrating the destruction of that enemies home planet. Gerbils don't befriend other Gerbils before butchering their faith and friendship just to overcome a nastier Gerbil. Gerbils don't befriend other Gerbils and manipulate them into destroying their own timeline. Gerbils don't hear the dying pleas of an antagonist and use that as an opportunity to monologue about why said antagonist should be shitting their pants instead of asking for his help. Gerbils don't take their 'friends' against their will to the one place they fear the most just to make a point.
      The list goes on and on and on and on. There's a reason 7 is regarded as the chess-master. In fact, many would regard 7 as the best option for the Time War rather than a War Doctor. If you don't believe it when people tell you he was dark and manipulative, then you clearly haven't seen enough of him.
      I recommend listening to his "Fear Me" speech if you want an idea of what the writers originally intended for him.

    • @RopeDrink
      @RopeDrink 5 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      @Deleted - I understand what you're saying, but regardless of whether you like McCoy or not, the Seventh Doctor (character) is undoubtedly responsible for the highest volume of questionable acts (for the Doctor), especially if you embrace expanded media, and it all stems from the Cartmel Masterplan.
      PS. Suspending disbelief is pretty much a requirement of the show. We're dealing with a humanoid alien with a space-and-time machine who farts around the galaxy being a hero. In the classic era, that can involve anything from the Loch Ness Monster to aliens made out of bubble-wrap and green goop. It'd be like seeing Capaldi as the Doctor and constantly referring to him as Malcolm Tucker.

    Love McCoy's performance here. When he first confronts the guards he's nervous but confident in his ability to handle the situation. As he sees that his plan is working the nervousness fades with each line and the confidence increases.
    And it still scares me a little when he says "Shut up!"

    • @RopeDrink
      @RopeDrink 7 ปีที่แล้ว +23

      What I like about it is he already knows the other guy isn't a threat - he doesn't even look at him, not even once. He's got his eyes fixed 110% on the one he knows would do something reckless - and yes, that SHUT UP is epic, putting the lesser threat into submission while he works on the other without even moving.

    • @BojoPigeon
      @BojoPigeon 7 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      And once the guy says "...I've never used one up close before" The Doctor pretty much has all the info he needs. He knows the guy has never had to look into the face of the person he was killing, so he tells him to look into his eyes, and then the guy can't go through with it.
      I know the title says "The Doctor's Mind Power" but I think in this case it's another example of the Doctor being really good at reading people and knowing the right thing to say to diffuse a situation.

    One thing that irked me about the Tenth Doctor was his black-and-white hatred of guns. Here, Seven presents a more interesting hatred of firearms, criticizing them more as a symbol of cowardice than ad a symbol of sometimes-necessary violence.

    • @RopeDrink
      @RopeDrink 7 ปีที่แล้ว +76

      The irony is 7th has probably been 'shot' more times than any other Doctor, assuming you include the audio dramas. Not that I've counted but he took three bullets in the movie and was shot in the shoulder by Tennant's baddie in one of the audios - even shot by RIVERSONG in one of the latest - and shot by a laser weapon in another (and there are undoubtedly other times as well). You're right on the other thing, though - it's the ease of the trigger vs the reality of murder. The title should be "Mind Games" rather than "Mind Power" if you ask me.

    • @RopeDrink

      Technically it wasn't - he didn't die to the bullets (they were in his shoulder and leg), it was the operation performed by ignorant humans who didn't understand his double-heart beat, so they went to 'investigate' and clogged his heart(s) with their probe. A brutal death.

    Number 7s hatred of guns is the best of all of the Doctors thoughts on guns.

    • @RopeDrink
      @RopeDrink 7 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      It's not just guns - he has a hatred of weapons in general, which is reflected in his relationship with Ace. He threatened to decapitate a Knight in Battlefield with his own sword, but the Knight used THIS EXACT SAME SPEECH against Seven. Whenever he needs a problem exploded or beaten up, he relies on Ace to do it, unless he has no other choice (eg. When he decides to face the Destroyer in Battlefield but is stopped by the Brigadier, or in Remembrance when he himself blows up a Dalek as he knows the soldiers have no chance on their own, and Ace at the time had never seen one before thus he didn't want to put her in danger). Check his speech against Morgane in Battlefield when she threatens to unleash nuclear weapons - it's one of the few angry moments of Seven. In multiple episodes outside of that, he's constantly bitter about the use of weapons of all kinds, guns especially as it's just so 'easy'.

Act happy and it won't matter if you actually are... do not question your action; the only answer is that disrupting the illusion points toward the reality and that cannot be allowed. remove the doubter and restore the premise: act happy and you will be seen to be. pretense over being....

      For great scenes, look for the Doctor's Last Words in "Survival" or his confrontation with Davros in "Remembrance of the Daleks"

    • @RopeDrink
      @RopeDrink 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      For more of 7th's TV darkness, check out his crushing victory speech to the supreme dalek after the destruction of Skaro in "Remembrance of the Dalek's", his "Kill her" speech in "Curse of Fenric" where he brutally demoralizes Ace, his speech to Morgaine in "Battlefield" where he explains the horror of nuclear weapons, and the scene where he asks Ace to do something explosive for him in Silver Nemesis.
      Just a small bunch of examples. His scenes with the Master & Davros in Survival & Remembrance are also noteworthy. He's also at his most melancholic in Ghost Light, which is overall a pretty dark and atmospheric episode that's very character (rather than plot) driven, so it's worth watching to see 7 in action.
      For Doctor Who at its most dark and intriguing, Curse of Fenric is still the episode to watch - it has pretty much everything you need for a whopping episode that features Doctor No.7 in full-on chess mode with plenty of explosions and no nonsense attitude.

    The only real problem I can see unless you get hung up on the Kandy Man is the studio bound Terra Alpha,and the go-karts that travel at about 2mph. But with so much money being spent in season 25 on the location work for Rememberance,Nemisis & Greatest Show there had to be cost cutting somewhere and sadly this was the story that felt the pinch. Still a great three parter though IMO.

    This scene couldve been really dark...

    • @RopeDrink
      @RopeDrink 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      It is dark, in context. In the brief time we meet the sniper, we're informed that he's grown accustomed to casually killing people for personal enjoyment (innocent, unaware people), with an accomplice/partner who is clearly the opposite and probably a bit too intimidated to speak out too much. How does the Doctor handle him? By getting into suicidally close-quarters and slowly but deliberately playing a very subtle moral mind-game, peeling away at his comfort zone until the guy doesn't know what to do.
      There's no fluff, no happiness, just focus on the ease of a trigger vs the weight of murder. What's also ironic about this scene is that despite the Doctor disarming the guy and knowing he has casually killed people, he does not impose anything on the sniper. He's left to be free, albeit weaponless, and forced to help the Doctor with information. This isn't a do-good Doctor like 10, this is a Doctor on a mission, with much bigger fish to fry than a thrill-kill seeker who has shot down lots of oppressed protesters.

      At least he gets to keep making some sweet audios. Listened to quite a few this week, one of the most memorable being the simply named "Master" - some hefty 'young timelord' history between the two gets explored, too, and a very creepy episode overall. Very intriguing. Also have Night Thoughts (practically a horror-story), The Fearmonger (which has Ace performing the very same 'mind trick' from above video clip, with interesting results), and Colditz (with David Tenant). Love Sylvester/7th.

    Eccleston was much darker, though I imagine John Hurt will be the darkest!

    • @RopeDrink
      @RopeDrink 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Eccleston wasn't dark at all - anger isn't darkness. 9 was a wrathful post time-war Doctor. 7 is the Doctor who caused arguably the largest time-war instigation by blowing up Skaro (literally willing to cause genocide without a second thought), talked a Supreme Dalek into killing itself, threatened to decapitate an antagonist with their own sword, disarmed snipers with mind-games, borderline tormented his own companion 'for her own good', completely and utterly smashed his companions faith in him by insulting her to tears (though he had no choice for that one), caused one antagonist to kill another with his schemes, nearly smashed the Master's face in with a disembodied skull, always kept his plans as a secret to himself (not even Ace was let in on his plans). 7 never stumbled into trouble by accident - he searched for it and buried it beneath complex master-plans and had fates sealed before he ever left the TARDIS. 7 is the darkest Doctor the show ever had. They said Capaldi would take that mantle but he never did.
