'Umrao Jaan' was Rekha's swan song performance. She broke the mould with this film, and moved away from commercial cinema to create something independent and art-house. This is by far her best work, as an actress, and as an artist. If I'm not mistaken, Rekha won the National Award for her performance in 'Umrao Jaan', and she truly deserved it. Her performance is classical in this film, and lives on today. Such depth, and nuance can be seen in her performance in this film, and she has been captured beautifully - as she is simply stunning, and serene. Rekha had quite a difficult journey in the Indian film industry. She was not warmly accepted because she came from South India, and the Hindi film industry struggled to give her worthy film roles - they didn't quite know where to place her. But slowly, but surely, Rekha became a house-hold name, and now she is remembered and celebrated across generations for her contribution to Indian cinema.
She plays a courtesan. She's saying there are many attracted to the beauty of her eyes. Basically that she's like a flame to which moths are attracted. The story starts with two girls who are kidnapped, one is sold to a rich man and becomes respectable, the other Umrao Jaan is sold to the brothel and it's her story. The main guy in the audience is the husband of the other girl. Watch Rekha in the Khoobsurat song Piya Bawri. Or the song Aaj kal pao zameen par from the film Ghar. I like that a lot.
Best song from this film is the last song of the film...it breaks your heart...do watch it....It's called yeh kya jagah hai dosto ( what is this place my friends) it is when she goes to perform in her hometown and stage is close to her old home...
The mesmerizing magic is in every aspect of the song....the beautiful direction, exquisite performances, the memorable melody, the tantalizing rendition and the soul stirring lyrics... 'The naughty magic of these eyes has thousands of die-hard fans...' croons the confident courtesan, 'it's only here that you find wine served through the medium of these eyes...otherwise they say there are thousands of watering holes in the world!'
This scene is in the brothel The dance is kathak The language of the song is urdu Its a fully feminine world The men whom u see come here for relaxation Of course they have to pay according to the level n class of the brothel Indeed if they want to soend a night with the girl its another issue Its quite costly The girls get soecial training to be able to perform without any mistake Its a litlle bit comparable to the Geisha world in japan Tje elderly lady is in charge of the place and the young girls u see also perform according to the demand
You are an exquisite reactor Matthew ! In true sense ! Not only due to the apt and warm words of appreciation that you are able to come up with for each video you react to. It’s mostly due to you being a serene and honestly involved reactor, in the videos that you watch, that you don’t need to force yourself to throw random comments, at every instant of the video, just to fill up the blank and make it a “reaction” video as such. Your observations, comments and inquiries flow naturally with the pace of the video and that’s truly fantastic ! Keep reacting to more such gems from the golden era please ☺️
As always an insightful and thoughtful reaction to this classic. If you like the idea of Indian cinema exploring the world of courtesan, please review Pakeezah. It’s a movie that was shot over a decade because Meena Kumari (the leading lady in the movie) had a falling out with her then husband who was a co producer of the movie with her. This movie released in the early 70s is THE movie if you are interested in this genre and also has amazing production value that will never date.
Nice review Matt, a small suggestion is if you get a chance please go through the translated version of song to understand the dance steps and movements by the performer.
It's synchronistic when you said "That look, those eyes" she was saying "it is only I who can intoxicate you with my eyes". Very expressive and very observant indeed.
Rekha actually can be mother of Ash ;) She is the generation of her(and mine,Im 3 years older than Ash)parrents.Rekha is born 1954(66 years old now) ,and Aishwarya -1973(47yo).When Aishwarya was beginning 30 years ago with her model career(she went into cinema around 1997),Rekha was already an established, famous actress(the love story with now father in law of Ash-Amitabh Bachchan, back then)
Your conundrum about the relationship between love and respectability can be explained very simply. Think of a case where one of your princes from the royal family (or even any doctor, lawyer, Parliament MP) falls in love with a bar dancer or stripper. Think of the movie Pretty Woman. It's not that different. And this story is set in times of over a century ago. Courtesans don't exist anymore ... or at least very few do. The ones shown in movies that were set in 70s or 80s are more story driven than reality driven.
Thanks so much for accepting my suggestion and reacting to this iconic number. You Must react to another beautiful song of this movie which is actually an age old folk song known as" Kahe ko Byahi Bidesh". Which signifies the separation of a girl from her parents when she leaves her home after wedding. It's amazing.

I would suggest that Rekha is brilliant but so many before her have performed mujra songs to perfection including chalte chalte from Pakeeza . Also vijantimala belongs to golden era and before Rekha 's time by at least 20 years
The storyline of Umrao Jaan is quite similar to the book, then feature film called "Memories of a Geisha". The only thing lacking in "memories" is that it only had one dance sequence, albeit powerful. Rekha's Umrao Jaan on the other hand is a complete masterpiece, from storyline, acting, soundtrack, dance and incredibly sewn costumes.
You asked about this style of dance primarily being paired with love poems. This style of dance is a Bollywood-ized, or pop culture version of kathak. Initially, kathak was performed as a part of Hindu devotion and celebration (which did include romantic themes pertaining to Hindu gods and goddesses). It evolved into a more “romantic” dance form when utilized in the Mogul courts. :) nowadays, kathak is still paired with religious as well as romantic themes!
Love your reaction, Rekha is one of my favourite actress. Rekha is so talented and dance expert. A lot of dance experts said in Indian cinema Kathak dance start with Rekha and end with Madhuri Dixit. For instance, no one said sex is the alternative to fossilised social norms. I think you are assuming things from what the conversation is about. Genuine romantic love is not the same as casual sex. Neither is a strict rule based system ever forever. They all change forms over time. No society stays stable forever.
@@TheCamerad Who's to prove genuine Romantic love exists. Every person in love assumes his/her love is genuine but then 2 years later suddenly start sporting a "irreconcilable differences" flag. What is the divorce rate and out of wedlock children rate in all of Western world? Do you think the children psychologically marred by incomplete insecure houses with missing parents or weekend visit parents going to be solid bedrock to build and sustain these countries? My assumptions are actually more valid based on data than calling countries with traditional norms as fossilized. All these traditional societies do is provide checks and balances to reduce impetuous irrational behavior. People are not being hanged or shot for falling in love. Throwing away organically developed societal norms which are time tested to rush headlong into constantly churned out politically correct trends is not wisdom.
