    As a meteorologist by degree, I absolutely love this. I am appalled by how many “emergencies” they issue now. Heat waves are now broadcast as the apocalypse. Warnings are helpful but not when it’s abused. It desensitizes the people from when a real storm actually hits. And they will only say what models say rather than their own intuition, experience or looking up at the sky.

    • @stevenluo9516

    • @phils4634
      @phils4634 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

      Basically insufficient reliable information to provide a high-granularity prediction. Even with faster computing (promised by the IoT and Quantum Computing revolutions), granularity will still be insufficient to provide more than 24 or so hours of significant local accuracy. Rainfall is an excellent example: We have two accurate gauges, 30 metres apart, and in any one rain event, they will rarely register the same amount of precipitation (although both are very well located). We NEVER have the same rainfall as the local airbase (10km distant); neither do we have the same temperature ranges, nor maximum / minimum temperatures. Large-scale forecasting can be surprisingly accurate; small scale, well that's another story entirely.

    • @paulis7319
      @paulis7319 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      @@phils4634 You can move those gauges closer - even side by side - and they'll still be different. There's an old joke about a farmer who left his double-barrel shotgun against a fence and only one barrel filled with rain. It's the most accurate joke ever written.

    When we lived in Bath, PA, the severe thunderstorm warnings were scary accurate, but as soon as we moved to Allentown, PA, that accuracy dropped considerably. Pretty much 19 out of 20 severe thunderstorm warnings don't actually lead to a thunderstorm. Most we've been getting is the sky getting dark, about 5 raindrops and then nothing else.
    It got so inaccurate that we started joking, "better water the plants, there's a severe thunderstorm warning."

    When I interned with a news station years ago, their meteorologist told me that he had like a 6 week course before taking the job, and that when he said "25%" or "50%" chance of rain that was based on how likely he felt it would be rather than some computer-generated stat. Other meteorologists mean that "25%" or "50%" of the area will experience rain. You have to crack the code to know what they mean!
    And funny enough, the news station I interned with experienced a jump in ratings on the day they DIDN'T cover thunderstorms because all three local news channels had been covering them all week and people just got bored with the other channels covering the same old afternoon storms again.

    Now to be fair. The more accurate weather predictor models cost money to access. And ad revenue from Jimmy's used cars isn't going to cut it. So using the resources that they have, it's better to air on the side of caution. And if you get a sensational story out of it, all the better

    Wayne Mahar was our meteorologist in Central New York for decades. He's now down South during retirement, filling in for his local station down there. During a big storm in Buffalo, recently, he live streamed the weather - it was fascinating watching and hearing him explain what was going on

    The frustration we have with meteorologists on predicting weather comes with how they tell you the weather jn your city.
    Say you live in San Antonio, and the weatherman gives you a 50% chance of rain. He would have to go "well, half of the city is at a 90% chance of rain, and the other half is at 10%, which I'll have to average out to say 50%".
    Now you step outside your house one one side of the city, it's sunny out, and you say "oh, the weatherman is always wrong", while someone on the other side of the city steps out to pouring rain and says "50% my ass, you could's swim in all of this! The weatherman's an idiot!"
    All the while he was just carrying standard practice.

    I was raised on a farm and every morning my dad listened to the weather forecast.
    We got up and ate breakfast while listening. Because dad was a scientist..
    Grandpa was a naturalist. We went to his place to cut some hay and he was sitting on the porch. He told us that it was going to rain and we couldn’t cut hay.
    Dad said the weatherman said it was going to be clear.
    Grandpa said…” the dairy cows were slow to leave the barn this morning and my arthritis is acting up.”
    It rained like a cow pissing on a flat rock.
    Grandma could taste snow coming and mom got a head ache when a storm was two days out..
    But we all listened to the weather…
